Well I finally did it. I've just played 3 days in a row, working on playing a smarter game, and it paid off. Monday: 100. Tuesday: 102. Today: 97. Even within my game today I had a few blow up holes, and a lost ball, so I feel like 90 isn't too far off now. Gonna keep pushing for it because it feels great seeing my numbers dropping so drastically.

I had looked at that too but ruled it out because the official applied a one stroke penalty, the penalty for striking a moving ball is 2 strokes.

I would assume he would have put it under rule 19-2: "If a player’s ball is accidentally deflected or stopped by himself, his partner or either of their caddies or equipment, the player incurs a penalty of one stroke." Hitting it while it was moving would count as a deflection probably? But does it count as a deflection if you don't change the path of the ball? I don't know.

Been struggling with getting into the low 100's for a while now. Just bought my first driver, a Nike Sumo2 I picked up for $45 (~25USD), took it to the range and immediately started hitting the straightest, furthest shots I've ever played. Hopefully when I hit the course next week the fairways will be found and the numbers will drop.

For me it's a 3/4 swing SW if I want it to land soft or a controlled PW if I want it to run on (which I'm not too good at so I normally opt for the SW)

Definitely a good read, and it makes me feel less guilty for hitting the driving range much more often than the practice green.

Where did that number come from? I always assumed you should practice much more on putting than everything else because your putter accounts for 30-50% of your shots.

There is, but it's not an insult just because I intend it to be one. I could call you a table, meaning it to be offensive, but unless you find it offensive then it's not an insult. The same goes the other way. Throughout my childhood I used the word f****t a lot (everybody at school did, I didn't know any better), and though I never hated gay people or intended to harm them through my use of said word, that doesn't mean I never offended anyone by using it.

I don't think the intent behind a word can deem whether or not it is offensive.

For people in some social circles there is no such thing as someone's preferred pronouns being obvious. Count yourself lucky that you don't have to specify with everyone you talk to.

I completely agree. This particular case isn't really moving towards being more PC, rather towards a misunderstanding of some pretty basic linguistics. My point wasn't that we should remove these sort of words, or enact rules that stop us from using them. I was meaning on a more personal level. Example: I have a transgender friend who has told me that she doesn't want me to use phrases like "hey man" or "hey guys" etc, because they make her feel uncomfortable. So I respect her wishes and try not to use these phrases around her (even though I regularly use these words when talking to other female friends who don't mind it). I don't care whether or not it actually offends her, because it's not a difficult thing for me to do, and it doesn't really matter when there are other words I can use.

I have no idea why anyone would be opposed to a more PC society. Like, if you are given the opportunity to offend someone or not to offend them, why would you want to offend them? The second someone tells me not to use a word around them, I try my best to respect their wishes. It doesn't affect me in any way whatsoever apart from being a bit more considerate.

I'm not in any position to offer swing advice, but I think if you have one major problem then the solution may be as simple as going to a coach to get an external view or even just filming yourself if you haven't tried that. Sometimes what it feels like you're doing and what you're actually doing are two completely different things.

My HI is mid 30's. I can't imagine needing to take more than a dozen balls on a trip. I guess it depends on the length of your trip etc. but if you're going somewhere to play golf, chances are that you'll be able to buy more balls there should you need them.

Yeah it would be interesting to know how that technology works. I'm assuming they just use range balls at Topgolf, but would it affect the structural integrity of a 4 or 5 piece ball having a chip in there?

I've been keen to try out Topgolf ever since I heard about it. Looks like a cross between golf and bowling. Also looks like a good way to get younger people into playing golf, since the numbers have been dropping lately. I think I'll be waiting a wee while before one opens anywhere near me though...

I agree. But $50 on a setup like this + a trip to the range every few weeks to see how you're going, vs. a few trips to the range every week would not only save you money but end up with getting in a lot more practice time.

Yeah I'd be confused if I saw someone doing that at a public course/a green fee payer doing it. If you're a member at the club then I don't see why it would be a problem provided you aren't holding anyone up.

I play almost exclusively as a single, and have never encountered problems. Maybe my course is just friendlier or something, but every time I tee off by myself I am asked to either play through or join in with the group in front within the first 3-4 holes. As far as playing multiple balls goes, a few weeks back I encountered a guy playing about 5 or 6 balls at once, for practice purposes. He was very courteous and let everyone play through and explained what he was doing. Didn't inconvenience me or anyone else from what I could see. General rule of thumb: No matter how many people you are playing with, or how many people are in someone else's group, be as courteous to everyone else as possible, and everyone's going to have a good time.

The saving will depend on a number of factors, but IMO it's definitely worth the investment to switch. You'll definitely save something, and LEDs are a lot more durable than their halogen or incandescent counterparts.

I live in New Zealand, and golf gear here is ridiculously expensive, I'm talking around 2x the prices of most of the stuff I see listed on American sites. I'm just wondering if you guys use any stupidly cheap clubs in your everyday golf bag, or if you think it is necessary to spend big money in pursuit of the perfect clubs. Interested to hear both sides.

My thought on the issue is that any sport being in the olympics advertises it on a world scale. Maybe making it more accessible to people who haven't seen it before or haven't taken an interest. I'm all for that.
