  1. Cap strokes at double par. 2 balls in the water is enough to sufficiently humiliate someone. If the game is largely for fun with some $ tossed around to make it more interesting then don't crush someone's soul with making them hit into the water over and over and over. The suggestion that not being able to carry 150yds should mean a different tee or not playing for $ is also spot on. Maybe modify the rules: "For hole X with 150 forced carry, you may hit from the reds with a ? stroke penalty." But yeah, if it's just for fun and the $ is to spice it up, don't beat down the worst player in the group.
  2. I am having EXACT trouble with 5 and 6. I have not done video comp between GW swing and 5I or 6I swing. I "think" that I am swinging 5 and 6 too hard creating swing issues. I'll be at the range (hopefully with video) a couple nights this week and will look at those.
  3. Hope the weekend provided some nice weather up there. I look forward to hearing more about your experience with the OL clubs. What I've seen in my few months of working with them: Gapping: I have found that GW, PW, 9, 8, 7 are about the same as my previous set and provide a nice 10 - 15yd gap from one club to the next. 6 and 5 I'm still trying to figure out. The range I hit at on a regular basis is poorly marked for distance (100 / 150 / 200 / 250 are clearly marked but nothing in between) and I'm usually there at night, so I haven't figured out my 5 and 6 distance as closely as I'd like yet. I have found them to be REMARKABLY forgiving. I hit my 5 off the toe 3 times over the weekend. I was short left in the FW off the tee, short right on an approach, and short left on a par 3 2nd shot. All WELL in play and not grossly short. I've had similar experience with each of the clubs in the bag. Lastly, the GW is my new favorite club. I don't pretend to be long and that GW is as close to exactly 100yds full swing as anything I've ever hit. With the LSW info on how to control <100yd distances with 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 swings I have it pretty well dialed in at 40 / 60 / 80 yds as well. I suck at golf so it's not perfect, but I feel completely confident and my results have been much better with that club than with anything else in my bag.
  4. I've got the Cobra OL as well. How long have you had them? How are you liking them? I got mine around Christmas and really like them.
  5. Not to be "that guy," but this is not once a week.
  6. Hi, I'm Andy and I suck at Golf. I have been conning myself into thinking I'm an 18 with aspirations of getting under 15. I already played more golf 2019 than I did in all of 2018. I have read the rules of golf (thankfully the big changes prompted me to do a full read of the rules. The local rule for stroke and distance for an OB/Lost ball opened my eyes to the difference between stroke and distance penalty and lateral hazard penalty). What I have learned is this, I have never broken 90 playing completely by the rules of golf. I'm not sure I have broken 100 playing by the full rules of golf. I certainly haven't broken 100 this year. I am planning to play some tournaments over the summer so my conning myself and my generous scorekeeping near the end of last year will give me a nifty 18-ish handicap. That will likely go up over the next several months as four 90 or better scores come off the index. What I have realized over the last 2 weeks is that my practice habits suck. I need to be much more focused on following the practice tips in LSW (rereading that section this weekend). I want to be a "bogey golfer" who is around 90 most of the time, occasionally finds an 87 and understands that 95 is WELL within the likely range of outcomes. I started the year thinking that's where I was. Realizing that I'm not has been painful. Onward and Upward. The good news is that I really enjoy the game!
  7. Just looking at this hole makes me break out in a cold sweat. How far is the carry from the whites to the fairway (over the water that separates the tee from the fairway)?
  8. Where else are you playing besides TP (or whatever you audible to). For an audible, have you considered going out to Palm Springs? Tons of great courses out there? I've never played any of them, but I would assume that the Indian Casino/Resort courses in NE San Diego would be pretty good. I wasn't playing much golf when I lived in SD.
  9. Regardless of when it is I almost always try to call ahead. I always understand that I'm the a-hole showing up at the last minute unannounced hoping to get on so there are likely to be limitations. 1 - I agree with the caveat that some starters are better than others. 2 - in all discussions about all things I assume that people (as a group) are stupid and that makes everything much harder than it needs to be. I am rarely disappointed.
  10. All of the above is true. All of the above is fair. All of the above is understood. It is MUCH more a me thing than a "starter" thing that causes me to hate showing up to get on a wait list. I almost never do this anymore because I know this about myself. I have also showed up and had starters/check in folks say "yeah, we're open this afternoon. Grab a bucket, putt, chip, whatever you want and then stop by. Unless we get a weird rush I'll get you on when you're ready."
  11. I have played a lot in my life as a single. I have NEVER expected to be put out by myself. I ALWAYS assume that the course is going to pair me with another group to fill out their 4some (I do hate it when they jam me in as a 5th though). When I call asking if they have any openings for a single around 1pm (or whatever time I am hoping to play) I'm hoping they have a 3some booked they can stick me with. After reading this I understand the "we won't book a single into a fully open slot" rule. That makes sense. But not adding me into a 2some or 3some is just nuts. I will admit that I HATE showing up and asking to squeeze me in. I suck, but I like my pre-round routine and there is nothing worse than "hey, have you got a spot open?" "Sure, I can squeeze you in right now if you want." "Can I hit a bucket?" "Now or 2 hours from now are your options." "ugh, now then." Especially when the 1st par 3 backs up and the 2some behind us pulls up and I can see the 3some behind them roll up to the green on the previous hole.
  12. 57 pages of hot dress code talk! I LOVE IT!!!! my 2 cents: It depends on the course. Private clubs / country clubs can establish whatever they want, and probably should. My $25 muni should have almost no dress code. For the Muni I would say: Sleeveless on guys and cutoff shorts on anyone should be prohibited. I have no issue with basketball shorts. (thought, shorts of any kind should not allow the group to know what brand your skivvies are). I have tended to wear cargo shorts and I don't see how that is an issue (but picked up some decent golf shorts a month ago and won't be wearing my cargos again). I think denim shorts on guys are awful no matter what the situation, so I roll my eyes on those when I see them, but you do you. If you want to play shoeless, GO FOR IT!!!! It's a freaking game. It's outside. There's sunshine (usually). ENJOY IT!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm MUCH more concerned about players behavior and I'll politely inform a playing partner not to talk when others in the group are addressing the ball, not to walk in others lines, to fix their ball marks, to rake the bunker - etc. Doesn't matter if you're wearing slacks and a tie to play or basketball shorts. Be nice to the people around you.
  13. Do you think that the stance DJ took that put his foot on the path was the stance he would have taken if there were no path there and he had to hit the ball from that spot? (and to be clear, my tone is question, not challenge) You know the golf swing MUCH better than I do and you would have a MUCH better idea of what would be done there, so this will be my last comment, but fairly standard width stance and ball on front foot was the only way to get his foot onto the cart. Having to punch out from there I would have thought his stance would be more of a chipping stance with the ball on the back foot. More succinctly - It's hard for me to believe that when he saw the ball and the cart path he had any thought other than "how do I make sure my foot is on the path and I get a drop?" or slightly more charitably "oh, cool, I'll get a free drop from this spot with the cart path there!" I agree with all the comments on Rory - that shouldn't have been a drop.
  14. All fair points and I'm probably wrong about the specifics of the rule as currently written. But in the spirit of the rule (I know I know... I'm going into a rabbit hole) - DJ could have easily found a stance for a reasonable swing that didn't have a foot on the cart path. Ball back in stance. Feet closer together. Either or both would have been reasonable for a low chip out to the fairway which is what he would have had to do if there wasn't a cart path there. I'm certainly filing that away for my next $1 match!!! 🙂
  15. I agree that Rory shouldn't have received the drop/relief. But his point that "it's just like DJ on the last hole" was accurate. Both completely in jail behind a tree next to a cart path. DJ managed to get his heel on the cart path in an effort to beg for a drop, Rory wasn't able to manage that con. I don't think either should have been given relief. If I'm incorrect about the rule then I would argue that the rule is wrong. "I'm in jail here, what rule technicality can I use to escape" doesn't seem like the proper approach to the game.
  16. thanks for the willowick quick review. 🙂 "Walkable and not expensive" - sounds like my kinda place! Good luck on Sunday. One of these weekends we'll get us all out as a 4some. When the weather starts to cooperate it will be easier to plan.
  17. I've never played Willowick - how is that course? Is it walkable? I'm going to try to play on Saturday afternoon. Hoping to get a tee time around 1pm. Not sure if I'm going to play DeBell (Burbank) or Brookside or Hansen Dam. I'm taking kids for a hike in the morning and not sure when we'll be back so not sure when I'll get out. I can text you guys Saturday when I have a plan if you want? I can't play on Sunday.
  18. My kid turned up sick today so I logged on to cancel.
  19. I'm admittedly easy to amuse, but I almost spit out a sip of coffee on this unit. "DeChambeau's per cubic Bryson?" wasn't bad, but the Bryson's per Chambeau got me. Well played.
  20. I would like 1 day with "this game is easy." Right now, I'm satisfied with "it feels like it's getting better." I'm sure tonight's practice session will fall into 'I look like I have never played."
  21. ok. Thanks. I'll track goal progress a different way. I don't want to clutter that feed. enjoying the board. Thanks for your efforts to make it go.
  22. 510yd par 5 which is NOT reachable with my distance. But it was downhill and downwind so maybe ... or at least close. I hit a really nice drive 260, but pushed it right. I had a clear shot to the green, but out of a little rough. There was a bunker on the left/front of the green with the closest edge about 230 away. As I was waiting for the group in front to get on the green playing partners asked "can you get there?" "No, but I can get even with the bunker and just short of the green." I hit the 3W dead straight, 230, 5 yards short of the green. Exactly where I wanted it. I refuse to discuss the rest of the hole. 😞
  23. Is there an "edit post" option that I'm missing? I want to do updates to my 2019 goals as a log, but don't want to clutter the thread so I thought editing my original would be a good way to go. But I'm not seeing that option?
  24. Where in OC is this? I would love to try and hit balls into a boat. 🙂 Looks like they had the good sense to pull down the yardage signs @ SA.
  25. I would love to get 20 yards longer on my driver (who wouldn't), but it is reasonably accurate so I'm not complaining. My putting is in the 34 - 38 per round, so it needs to improve, but it's not destroying my rounds (significant improvement from 4 to 10 feet is a priority for me). I chip/pitch "meh" - again, much work to do, but I'm not ruining rounds with this. I get out of sand traps with 1 swing. But my irons.... ugh. So wildly inconsistent. Pulls, pushes, fats, thins, shanks, hozel rockets, chunks, slices, etc.... I spend MOST of my time practicing these and they aren't improving as fast as I want them to. Hoping that we get a break in the rain Tue/Wed this week so I can get some work in. But I need to get my irons working for me.
