You sky it you buy it !! I rarely let anyone hit my clubs. Irons.. thats fine... woods, no friggin way. I haven't put an idiot mark on one of my clubs in 25 years or more. I am not giving it to you just so you can sky ball the first whack and say " Oh... Sorry" as you hand it back to me. Besides my driver is 8 degrees, an inch and half long with an X shaft. Most guys aren't going to like it any way. I used to get asked all the time when I gamed a 4 degree driver. It started out as a novelty but I loved it. Any way because it was such a different club everybody wanted to try it once. I let a few guys hit it but they knew going in that if they did any thing untoward to it they would be buying it.

First round this year, one main problem
ND Fan replied to Dr. Slice's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
It's just timing, it's too early in the year to be critiquing... Hit some balls it will likely work itself out. I had no idea where the ball was going on Tuesday, my first round. I scored ok , but dang the ball just went where it wanted to. Don't sweat it. -
There should be plenty of stuff to compete in. Your city or county probably has a men's championship, get into that, many are flighted so regardless of your current skill set you'll have some experience in playing these type of events.

Don't ever tell yourself that, if you don't like the way you play get out there and out work your team mates nothing pays off more than hard work. Everybody has to believe in something and everybody should start by believing in yourself.

The one thing that really sticks out as to what i hate the most ion golf is when I prepare to fail on any shot. I get over a tough putt and instead of talking myself into making a good stroke I keep thinking " dang this is a tough putt" That kind of stuff will kill a golfer. Never think anything but positive, hit every shot like you know you're going to hit it perfect. Anything less is preparing to fail. After 30 years of this game I still do it almost every round at least once. If you ever think to yourself over a shot " don't fat this one or don't miss this putt or don't hit it in the water" Your stuck Basically any thought that starts with DON'T is what really pisses me off.

I grew up on a course that everybody teed up two balls off the first tee... everybody every time?! I 've been a member at another club for the past 10 years or so 15 miles away and the thought of that is absurd. It never bothered me. I think part of the reason is the first hole at the old club was 467 yards with the smallest darn green. For most guys that second ball didn't mean a thing they were carding a 5 or 6 no matter how many balls they hit off that first tee.

What wedges should a beginner have in his bag?
ND Fan replied to No1CeltsFan's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I honestly think a beginner should learn to use one wedge properly. Like a 54 degree SW Learn to use that and the rest will fall into place with some practice. But if you only have one you're forced to use it for every kind of pitch shot, and that should help in learning how to hit different shots more so than having a wedge for every occasion. I've only carried two wedges for the past 8 years, prior to that I just had one, well including my pitching wedge that comes with every set of irons. -
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2012 To Feature Augusta National
ND Fan replied to Bo the Golfer's topic in Golf Talk
Just pre-ordered mine form Game Stop. If you pre order with them you get a a free download of Bethpage Black Really cool. I honestly haven't been into video games for the past ten years but I got an Xbox a couple months ago because a buddy of mine insisted that i would love Black Ops.. He was right I play almost every night for an hour or two. I can't wait for this to come out. I hope its a more realistic game, I am tired of seeing the Tiger Woods series with guys who routinely shoot 24 under for 18 holes and hit 450 yard drives. That's just fantasy golf and kills the experience for me. I won't be playing that well when I get started but playing online won't be a lot of fun if you have to shoot 70 under to win the Masters. -
What do you do if mats are your ONLY option for range use?
ND Fan replied to jlund's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
If you hit the ball hard enough and strike down and through the ball like your supposed to Mats will destroy a set of irons. It will bend the shaft right above the hozzle or potentially bend the club head itself over time. I learned this about 18 years ago when I committed to this indoor golf center in the winter. By the time Spring came around most of my irons were bent fairly drastically. I hit the ball pretty hard and hit around 1000 balls per week all winter. I am sure some will not find the same issue by occasionally using them but be cautious. -
Rule number one... Asking for advice on a golf forum is not a great start. Most golfers have all kinds of advice, 99% of it comes from guys that can't play a lick or haven't improved in 10 years. You need to be able to filter out all the crap so something of substance can be processed. Number two... Work at it hard. hitting the range with a purpose is a hard thing to do for some. Make every range ball count for something. Pick a specific target and hit to it. Find a practice buddy. I know this sounds lame but finding someone willing to put in the same amount will help a lot. Make games out of practice. closest to the pin or closest to the target with a driver is a good game. PLay for a quarter or something. Chipping and putting are probably more important to learning how to score than anything else. be sure to work on your short game at least half as much as everything else. I tried posting a longer response yesterday but it never went through, I'll check back later with some other tidbits of ultimate wisdom.

Quote: OMFG man I had to stop this right here get a life!!!! get that golf club outta ur buddies ass u punk....dude you so close minded if I ever see you i shoot you in the head I bet you open up!!!! marijuana is a drug but a very VERY weak drug compared you your pills and alcohol you consume!?!?!?! GET A LIFE DUUUDE I swear its people like you I dont mind running up to a knocking straight out and trying to stomp some sense into your dense ass skull....Karma will come you wanna seriously compare smoking "weed" to people who smoke meth? I smoke plenty off weed and have for years and never once even thought about trying that garbage!!!!and your not contributing to drug cartels unless you buy shitty weed.....PERIOD stupid get your head outta your daughters snatch and grow up!!!! im out all I wanted to do is make you feel like a piece of shit I hope I accomplished that people like you are TRASH to society and give NORMAL people HARD WORKING people like us who like to get a little loose after a hard day at work c'mon by the way I had sex with your wife!(while we were smoking pot) This a pretty good example of what Pot can do to you. Nuff said..

I am actually uniquely qualified for this. I 've been working for a drug testing laboratory for the last decade . I also used to play golf with a guy who then was a fairly prominent member of the PGA Tour. That guy would smoke one just before playing every round, he said he couldn't hardly play without it. Something with his nerves especially in putting settled him down. Smoking marijuana the day wouldn't have any effect the following day. You probably just had a bad day. But Pot is pretty good at messing up your brain. I haven't known too many brilliant people who smoked pot on a regular basis.

I carried the last 7 rounds last year with no problem. That surprised me, I am 6' 2" and 248lbs. But I was determined to walk some so I bought a carry bag and just started walking. It wasn't bad but it seems those darn two strap bags are designed for much smaller people. I felt like Houdini getting out of a straight jacket every time I put the thing down. I wear a 48 inch jacket and those straps felt like getting into and out of a 40 short. I got a three wheeled cart this winter and plan on using it. What I like about walking is everything is right there. What I didn't like about carrying is I didn't seem to use my range finder as it wasn't handy and seemed to make things take even longer getting it out of the bag and such. Using the cart may be nice if I can get an appropriate holder for my range finder. Looking forward to walking off some pounds this summer.

How often do you go and how much time do you spend at a driving range?
ND Fan replied to BrushCaddy's topic in Golf Talk
I used to be a range rat but our club has a limited range. anything over 165 yards is not permitted. But I use the course for most of my practice time I will routinely play 3 or 4 balls and and hit several other shots per hole on top of that. I like that type of real world practice. -
I 've been between a +2 and a 2 handicap for the past 20 years. At our club playing in a handicap event is pointless for me. It is typical at our club for the net champion to shoot 6-7 shots better than his handicap in almost any event. Last year we had a buddy tournament. Two man best ball, 36 holes the winning score was 20 under par. You had to be 17 under just to get in the money. Net golf is shameless and a tiresome waste of time at our club. We have at least 4 guys who handicaps are ridiculous. One guy was caught last year shooting 83 and turning in 97 that day. Not much you can do about it when a 30 year member decides he's going to cheat, even though all his buddies know he does, so their games are adjusted weekly!!!

There are couple lady pros that do that. Most of them have their caddies line them up which I never understood. How do you get to that level without knowing where you're aiming.

Practice Like a Pro. How do you do this?
ND Fan replied to HogansSecrets's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Practicing like a pro has many meanings. There is Vijay who hits balls until he's blue in the face and then there are guys that rarely do anything but warm up and some short game work. Range time is a good thing but using the range effectively means hitting shots with a purpose. Aim at something specific, very specific. Change up clubs regularly and learn to hit them all. Spend the most time on the clubs you have the most trouble with. For most amateurs practicing like a pro isn't a good idea. They're not good enough to practice like a pro. Practice lack a hack who wants to break 80 most of time. -
I liked that article. Golf is all about feel. It's one reason many players have a hard time with anything less than a full swing. 10 or 12 wraps of tape?! that's just strange. Thats a lot of tape!!

How many Degrees can a cast club be adjusted?
ND Fan replied to Slappy9's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
usually OEM stuff can go a couple degrees but I doubt you'll find anyone that will guarantee them not to break. Just the nature of cast clubs. -
Forged vs Casted Cavity back iron weight
ND Fan replied to ronaldkuntoro's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
oh ... to answer your question. No, forged heads are not heavier than than cast heads. Some manufacturers may make slight increases or decreases off the norm but most clubs are built to the same semi standard specs. -
Forged vs Casted Cavity back iron weight
ND Fan replied to ronaldkuntoro's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Gentlemen, Almost all clubs are built to the same specs as far as head weight is considered , regardless of material used. Some materials are heavier and some are lighter but if the material is lighter they will use more material or additional weight to get head weight into a generally accepted range. The one big factor in making some heads feel heavier than others is shaft weight. You find a much bigger difference in shaft weight among manufacturers than you will in head weight. The lighter the shaft the heavier the head will feel and conversely for a heavier shaft. Interestingly enough back in the 90's one of Ping's most popular clubs were the Be-Copper eye 2's. What is interesting is the tooling for those clubs was a few years old and had never been used. Ping was planning to make their own version of the feather light club and this head was their design. By the time they got every thing together to begin production the featherlight fad had ended and they were stuck with nearly a million dollars worth of tooling. Karsten's son John decided to find a heavier wieght material to see if they could offer a model that would use this tooling. Be-Copper was the answer and a legend was born. Be Copper is strong enough, hard enough enough and heavy enough to get the light weight designed heads back into normal specs. One of Pings most popular and iconic clubs was a result of a mistake. -
Lost Dunes is probably my all time favorite. Best kept secret in Michigan or the US for that matter. http://www.golfclubatlas.com/courses-by-country/usa/lost-dunes-golf-club Truly an amazing place and I have played some great courses around the country.

What part of your game do you think is most important.
ND Fan replied to EverythingGolf's topic in Welcome, Everyone
This the golf question of the ages... the fact is that all facets of the game are pretty important. Scoring is not based on long game or short individually it's a marriage of the two. You could be the best putter on the planet but if takes you 6 shots to get to every green then I would say your putting, although great is not very important. The same could be said with a guy who hits everything pure and hits 16-18 greens per round but follows that with 45 putts. His long game although enviable is not important. Everyone needs to find a balance to play the game they way they want to. Not everyone needs to be a scratch golfer to enjoy it. It a simple matter of playing to the best of your ability in every aspect. When you do that the game feels great no matter what you shoot. For the average golfer I think chipping and putting is what saves sanity. Assuming you can strike the ball towards the general direction of the green the short game will make or break your score every time. If you can't reach most greens in under four or five shots. Please consider taking up bowling. -
If you played more golf you would have a more statistical relevant handicap. It's just math. Lets say you only played 4 times per year and have for the past 10 years you could easily range between 75 and 100 or even higher. Your number of rounds is not statistically sufficient to derive a completely accurate assessment. I 've always been a round scratch and I have shot over 83 a couple times in the last 20 years, It doesn't mean I am a 8 handicap. It would be uncommon for an 11 to shoot 100 but not unheard of. What you don't want to do is represent yourself as a 15 or more and shoot one of your 77's that would cause more grief than it's worth.
