I've been playing lately with a really good player (~1 handicap) and the course we play usually has hard and fast greens. There are days when he has trouble getting a pitching wedge to stop near where it lands, and it's not for a lack of club fitting or skill. Just remember that new clubs aren't a silver bullet. I can see being frustrated that an 8-iron doesn't stop but it sounds like you can chalk it up to the conditions. Anything lower than 7-8 and you have to account for some amount of roll out depending. I'm not sure what your greens are like but at my course if you hit a downslope or other undulation on the green all bets are off.

Anyone catch Justin Thomas at the tenth? Ouch! I happened to turn it on at that point and it was like watching something I might do in terms of one bad decision/shot after another. It was interesting rules-wise because he hit into a hazard off the tee, tried to play out of it twice but failed, then chose to drop. The rules official seemed uncertain of the exact options.
-
I go through periods where I struggle to hit partial wedge shots, so I hit a punchy sort of shot to run it up on to the green (sometimes up to 80 yards out ). Feels kinda silly, but it beats a shank! And I "get lucky" often enough that I get my fair share of 1-putts.
-
Are you sure he's not marking it with his putter or some other object other than a coin? I often use my putter to save time if I'm just picking the ball up for a moment to clean it or something.
-
Arm's-length or a little more, sure. If there's any zoom at all it's not much. OK, maybe 40 yards? Even 50? Still close enough to tell whether a golf cart is on the green. The other piece of this is, we don't see how he got to where he was. Whatever happened before the video started may have been more obvious (or maybe not). Either way, I'd still take the word of a guy standing right there who saw the whole thing over some inconclusive video.
-
OK, in the interest of the forensics here (), I'm not buying that. If anything, phone video tends to make things appear further away than they really are. He drives up and fist bumps them at the end. There's no perceptible zooming in or out. You can count maybe 7-8 cart lengths that he drives to get from the start to where the guys are standing. They're close enough to tell whether he's on the green or not.
-
Seems far-fetched he had time to set up a deceiving camera angle, or that he simply couldn't tell from what, 20-30 yards away? It's not a tiny golf ball we're talking about.
-
Not that I'm not losing any sleep over the whole thing, but for what it's worth the guy filming says he's on the green, so...?
-
It's pretty clear from the first few seconds of the video. I'd also take the word of the guy standing there taking the video and narrating that he's driving on the green.

But I don't understand what the attitude is? Pretty much every PGA tour caddie brings the bag up onto the tee box, at least some of the time. It's just easier in a lot of situations and doesn't do any harm. I don't mean to pick at you on this point, but this seems to be a common attitude and I would like to see it change. Probably starting to get OT so I will leave it there.
-
I am not sure as to the push cart-on-the-green thing (I think it might depend on the grass species and other environmental factors), but what damage do you think a push cart on a tee box will do? It's basically a small section of fairway isn't it? I try not to roll right through the middle of them since I know some people get upset but I often will roll over the sides or corners to avoid having to zig-zag my way to the fairway.

Your comment seems to be a bit of a strawman, much like the threads about Open venues not allowing women. I don't see anyone arguing the fact that it's his course and he can make his own rules, but we can probably all agree it's a ridiculous thing to do.

I've never used GolfNow since only a few courses in the area (and none of the ones I usually play, they're all 30+ minutes away) use it, and the rates seem to be pretty much the same as twilight. I just checked and the 4pm GolfNow price for a course I played over the weekend (Breakfast Hill) was the same as what I paid without using GolfNow. The Oaks in Somersworth has what they call Dynamic Rates so they are always adjusting discounts based on different factors. I can get out for around $20-$25 in the afternoon to play 18 walking; you can't beat that deal. I think something like that might make more sense for a lot of courses.

Is this really possible? Cutting a putt that is. I tend to draw or hook the ball, but every once in a while I will hit a push fade (rarely a full on slice). I have some wrist troubles so I usually figure I just didn't grip the club the way I normally do or I cupped my wrist or something. Keeping a flatter left throughout my swing has really helped me eliminate slices for the most part.

Couldn't we expect to see the entire ball if it were the green? It looks to me like the bottom left section of the ball is obscured by grass in the second picture.
-
How is fringe defined anyways? Or, I guess the definition of the putting green would be more relevant. I would have played it like it was fringe if it were me, based on the pictures you posted. Like you mentioned, the grass under her ball is clearly longer than the rest of the putting surface.

I don't understand his explanation, unless he simply forgot what actually happened. From http://www.independent.ie/sport/golf/it-was-ridiculous-paul-mcginley-and-danny-willett-take-aim-at-controversial-branden-grace-drop-35757007.html: To me it looked like his right foot was solid and he was shuffling and digging his left a whole bunch. He was looking where his left foot had been like something was wrong. Also suspect is that he got a similar ruling a few years ago: It sounds to me like he remembered a cheap way to get out of a tough situation.
-
Well, if there's one thing I know for sure, anyone who hits their ball on the wrong green had damn well better have their tail between their legs if there was no fore yelled. Plus, he can't play the ball from the surface of the green, so even if you didn't mark his ball and just note the general spot before moving it, that should be good enough since he'll have to drop anyways. I'd say you were a lot more polite than you needed to be!

Oops, didn't catch that in the OP. Still think it's ridiculous, though.

That would sort of ruin the excitement of the final round, wouldn't it? Is all the trouble really worth it over a belief that probably more than 99% of the field doesn't share? I find all of this kind of bizarre to be honest.

I'm surprised by all the courses that allow t-shirts. I'm not sure any around here do. Blue jeans are usually not allowed, either, except for once it turns colder. That's not to say I really care about dress code, but I think I'd rather wear golf attire than street clothes because it's more comfortable for walking if you're going to be sweating at all.

I mean, if we're trying to look at this logically, there's absolutely no question. There's no logical reason to not play on Sundays. Letting one (small) group's belief in the supernatural possibly affect the outcome of a major collegiate sporting event is not logical.
