Although I didn't really care for him at all, he was a rather large symbol in the NFL and will probably be a tough personality to replace.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I never cared for him, actually he annoyed me. So I won't miss him. I don't think he would have been as popular if he didn't do the Madden Series of video games.

He was an undeniably great coach and player (and one who made Al Davis look like he knew what he was doing), but he was a terrible announcer.

"The team that wins the football game is the one that scores more points than they allow."

Thanks, moron.

I don't think he would have been as popular if he didn't do the Madden Series of video games.

Without a doubt this is true. If his name weren't on the cover of the best NFL game ever, not many "younger" people would really know him IMO. I think he should get more credit (maybe EA Sports) for the game than for announcing.

I wasn't around for his coaching, so I don't know too much about that aspect of his career. But his announcing was mediocre at best for me. He said the most obvious things ever. And he got so much credit for that. He just rambled about nothing and everthing at the same time. He's almost as bad as Walt Frazier (Knicks announcer) for me. I don't like going off topic, but "Clyde" says some of the dumbest stuff ever. "The Knicks are completely omnipotent tonight." I'm pretty sure you don't use that word that way. I understand he got a thesaurus for Christmas, but no one bothered to teach him how to use one! So John Madden isn't my least favorite announcer, but he really didn't do much for me.

He kinda reminds me of the Dick Vitale of the NFL. I never really liked him in the announcer's booth. He start talking about how hard Tom Brady's worked and he'd end talking about his favorite sandwhich shop when he was a kid.

I loved listening to him and his stories and language, but he wasn't that great a football announcer.

I much prefer Collinsworth. He's full of insight and doesn't treat the viewers like idiots. He really talks football, going into detail about schemes, noticing little things about coverages and assignments. I learn about football when listening to him announce.

He was a great football icon, he drove me insane with his redundant comments "you gotta get the ball in the inzone to win a game" and so forth. But I gotta say i'll miss his sack riding enthusiasm for Farve.

All joking aside it wont be the same with out his voice.

    • Thats the second hardest hole so bogey is ok. How do you do on the number 1 hardest hole?
    • Ah, target golf off the tee and all the way to the hole always grinds my gears, This is not a terribly long hole so here's my two cents: Job #1 is to put yourself in play. Job #2 is to keep yourself in play. If hitting a driver is such a crap shoot then you are already betting on lower than 50-50 odds. Hit a hybrid and take your chances with a long iron, punch or whatever. Stick to your plan and accept your result knowing you did.
    • Ah, got it.  Yeah I'd just play it for bogey. Even as a low handicap I wouldn't be all that upset with a bogey on that hole.
    • Haha I made a I typo. I was thinking two things at once, ‘I don’t think bogey is a bad score’ and ‘I think bogey is a great score’. But I mixed them up and said the opposite
    • How isn't bogey a great score? As a 20 handicap every single time you make a bogey you are playing better than expected. Because if you bogeyed every hole you'd most likely be lower than a 20. You're a high handicap playing a hole that is lined with hazards the entire length of it on both sides.  Bogey is a very solid score for you on that hole.  From 300yds off the tee PGA tour players average 3.71 strokes to hole out. As a high handicap you are going to be more than 1 full stroke higher than that, probably closer to 2 full strokes higher.  If you had 100 different 20 handicaps play that hole I would bet a lot of money that the scoring average is greater than 5.0 Sometimes courses have really hard holes. Play for your bogey, be ecstatic about a par, and do everything possible to minimize double bogey.
