Wedge Shaft Flex vs Stiff Flex, Spinners, Etc.

Thanks for the responses to my question.

I have received a couple of s300 shafts to replace the shafts on my new wedges, but I have decided to wait this out a little while. I have been hitting some very nice shots around the greens and the "feel" of the softer tips is very noticeable. In other words, they really feel good on the shots that require slower swing speeds i.e. chips, short pitches, and sand shots.

I won't make a final choice until I get in a substantial number of full swing shots. On these shots it feels a little like a stiff graphite shaft. I'm not sure if I'll be able to control those shots well enough, but only time will tell and I'm willing to give it a little more time.

Hey everyone,

Had an internal catatonic rage moment on the course today and bent the shaft of my Titleist Vokey and as always, I am regretting it.

Thought it would be easy to re-shaft the thing but I've come across a problem identifying the shaft that is used...

I have an '07 Vokey Spin Milled wedge with Oil Can finish, 60 degree loft and 4 degree bounce.

Now on the shaft, it says I have a Dynamic Gold Wedge flex... and after looking through their website ( http://www.titleist.co.uk/golfclubs/...spinmilled.asp ) it seems they used both S200 and S300 shafts for the whole range... does anyone here know for sure which of these shafts would have been used for my particular club?

From reading elsewhere, I think they used the S200 for higher loft clubs such as mine as they are shorter... but can someone please confirm this for me!

I'd appreciate some help on this!

Look for posts by blades4me - talks about spinner flex - and cubfanbob , who contacted True Temper. TT told him wedge flex was basically an S200 shaft.

Actually, wedge flex is just a generic term they use these days. It means something different to each club manufacturer.

Five years ago a Cleveland wedge would have come with a stock s400 shaft. Today it is more like an s200 with an active or soft tip. Today's Cleveland wedge shaft is nothing like the old s400 shaft.

I would call Titleist to ask what they used on that club.

The only other advice I could give you would depend on just what it is you want out of that club. If you want to use it for fluffy shots around the green, then an s200 shaft with a softer tip would be generally good for you. If you want it to hit full shots from 60 or 70 yards from the fairway then you better be very, very precise to use that type of shaft.

The 4 degrees of bounce requires a lot of precision to begin with, so maybe the s200 would work well for you. I like the shaft so long as it doesn't have a soft tip. I personally can't reliably hit a full wedge with that soft tip, but maybe you can.

In the end I got in touch with Titleist, who were very quick to respond which was nice!

Turns out it was an S200 shaft so think I'll stick with what despite what I have read about the benefits of a S300 etc. but thanks for the input, I appreciate it!

Hey everyone,

Have you tried removing the grip to see whether the shaft flex is printed on the shaft? All of the raw, 41" shafts I've order have X100, S400, etc. on the butt end of the club. If it hasn't been cut down too much, you might still be able to find it.

If you need to just tinker, a lot of people are choosing the S400 shafts and tip trimming them 3.5" (+ or - depending on the bore depth to ground measurement for the wedge head).

Agreed, it just keeps getting better and better, hopefully they'll make a PW spinner shaft too

The DG Spinner shaft is from True Temper's Dynamic Gold line and comes in two flexes. Wedge flex is for sand and lob wedges and Wedge+ is for gap and pitching wedges.

New shaft for SW and LW is said to produce a more penetrating flight and increased spin up to 700+ rpm, and with the new groove rules,

Only beneficial in the hands of somebody who is at least semi-skilled.

For somebody who can't control their distances and/or spin, its yet another waste of time, another piece of tour technology that joe average thinks will have him peppering flagsticks with his approach shots.

What makes it a wedge shaft vs a non-wedge shaft? Is there a reason you couldn't put these in other clubs? Also, where does the "Wedge" flex fit into the scheme of the TTDG, stiffer than S300?

no reason why you can't put them in other clubs, doubt you'd get the same results.

I'm skeptical though, the ball will land lower so that has to offset the extra spin you'll get.

What? When you hit the ball with a lower angle to the green it spins more......these shafts are helping add spin by decreasing the angle the ball hits the green? The lower the shot, usually, the more spin.

That depends on the type of ball, too. I doubt Tim Clark was playing a Callaway Warbird at The Players.

    • I would never do the extended warranty on the $50 slow cooker.  I also routinely reject the extended service plans on those toys we buy for the grand-kids.  I do consider them on higher cost items and will be more likely to get one if the product has a lot of "Electronic Tech" that is often the problem longer-term.  I also consider my intended length of ownership & usage.  If my thought is it would get replaced in 2-3 years then why bother but if I hope to use it for 10 years then more likely to get the extension. I did buy out a lease about a year ago.  Just prior to the lease end date the tablet locked up and would not function.  I got it repaired under the initial warranty and would not have bought it out if they had not been able to fix it since IMO once electronic issues start in a car they can be hard to track down & fix.  They did fix it but when I bought out the lease I paid up for the extended warranty the would cover electronic failures because my intent is to keep that car for another 8-10 years and I just do not trust the electronics to last.  Last week the touch screen went black and was unresponsive.  It reset on the 2nd time I restarted the car but that is exactly how the last malfunction started.  I fully expect to have a claim on that on repair under the extended warranty.  I do not recall the exact cost to fix last time since I did not pay it but I think it was @ $700-$800 and I suspect that will be higher next time.
    • Have you looked at Model Local Rule F-9 Relief from Tree Roots in or Close to Fairway?  You could extend this to cover exposed rocks.  The rule is recommended to be used only for areas relatively near the fairway, a player who hits a shot 20 yards in the woods doesn't really deserve relief.   Players can always take Unplayable Ball relief, they're not required to play it from a rock or a root.  Of course, they hate to take the penalty stroke too.
    • I agree with @klineka, you're clearly doing something right.  Its always going to be a bit of a guessing game if you don't have any scoring history.  On the other hand, understanding that it takes only 54 holes to establish an actual handicap, and they have about 6 weeks in which to play and post enough scores, I don't think its at all unreasonable to require them to have an official handicap before they become eligible for prizes.  I don't know how you structure the fees for the series of competitions, but if its possible they'll play with the group without being eligible for prizes, you could consider a way to let them do that without contributing to the prize pool.
    • I run tournaments and want to put in a local rule that allows relief from tree roots and rocks that are not loose impediments. We have some really terrible lies in some of our courses in my area and nobody is getting paid enough to break clubs. Let me know if you think the verbage for this rule makes sense. Local Rule Roots and Rocks You may move your ball from a tree root or buried rock one club length for free relief no closer to the hole. However you may not use this rule to get relief from a tree, bush, boulder, or other foliage hindering your swing. Your only option here is to play it as it lies or take an unplayable for a one stroke penalty.
    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
