Guys,

I am looking for recommendations on balls to play that don't cost me $50 dollars a dozen. I like to play a soft ball that I can work on the green. I love ProV1, but don't want to go pay for them.

Any opinion on Pro-V1 Xout?

Thanks

3 WOOD - FIRESOLE
IRONS - TA3
WEDGES - 52,56 60
PUTTER - WHITE HOT

X-Outs are bad news. Non-conforming for one.

HX Hot Bites are very soft I've heard and just as long as the HX Hot. $29.99/dozen for HX Hot Bites.

I'm a fan of the following two:

Bridgestone e5/e6 ($20 - $25)
Top Flite D2/Freak ($15 - $22)

I have combination depending on what im trying to...drive long or hit it soft on par 3's with irons, but those are your best bets in my opinion...

Nike VR S Covert Tour Driver 2.0, 8.5* S
Nike VR S Covert Tour 3-Wood (15*) S
Nike VR Forged Split Cavity (2-5)

Nike VR Forged TW Blades (6-PW)

Titleist Vokey SM4 54* Wedge

Nike VR X3X Wedge 58*

Nike Method Core 1 Putter

Titleist ProV1

If you're looking for a ball that act's like a ProV1, it will be tough to find outside of a tour caliber ball.

That being said, Srixon Z-URS is the closest I've found. Taylormade's TP Red & Callaway's HX Tour 56 are pretty soft as well (I would look at the new Tour i when it comes out too). Bridgestone's B330-S is almost as spinny around the greens, but it's a ton firmer off the putter. All that said, the Z-URS was the best for me, someone who likes the ProV1 off the putter and the wedges. It's longer and lower spin off the driver, feels virtually the same off the putter.

Z-URS runs at about 39.99, same with the Bridgestone. You can get last year's TP Reds for 19.99 (best deal in golf), I think the HX tour balls will be headed towards that price point as well. IMO, you get what you pay for...

BUT, maybe you want to check out the TopFlite "Gamer". There's been some interesting reviews of this ball, some people prefer it to a ProV1

Titleist NXT Tours....that would be my choice. Under $30...and reacts very similar to the ProV1s around the green.

And better yet...I find they react better to my long game distance wise.

If not a Titleist ball....the Nike One closeouts are selling under $30 right now (however I am not a fan of Nike balls...it is just me).

Take a look at the DT Carry. It's a nice, soft ball that lands very softly on greens. They also roll pretty true on putts. $20 for a dozen.

I've never hit a ProV1 so I can't compare directly, but the 3 balls in my signature are all pretty soft mid-priced balls. So far I'm liking the NXT Tour best, but it's a close race.

For a less expensive ball, Bridgestone's e5 and e6 are very good quality for the price.

If i buy a ball, its usually a nike power distance soft (green box) or sft2.

A guy who works at Golf Galaxy told me that in the "Popular Mechanics" magazine, they did some sort of a test and they found that the green box nike power distance balls are engineered exactly the same way as ProV1.. I don't know if he was lying or not though.

As far as balls go, I'd try the Srixon Soft Feel.

Green box Nike power distance balls are NOTHING like the proV. They feel soft but they generate -ZERO- spin and seem to balloon.

I played Srixon Soft Feel balls last year. Good ball but, IMO, there are better out there for the $20 price tag. Try the e5+

I love the distance sofft feel and spin of the HX hot bites, only problem is one full wedge with a CG 14 and its toast!! If Callaway can improve the durability and keep all the other properties than they will be on a winner... Anyone got any suggestions for a Soft yet durable ball? (i know its asking a lot) im going to try the E6+ and NXT tour next.

    • You may be able to find a regular flex Blueboard on the second hand market. I’m little more than half your age so I swing a shaft that launches pretty low so I don’t have a lot of experience with Regular flex (other than when I try to hit it I miss way to the left).    There are other shafts, such as the newer Ping Alta that I’ve heard good things about. And one that no one talks about. The Jupiter shaft. You can get this shaft for a $100 with a grip and your Ping adapter installed. I was talking to the golf manager at Dick’s Sporting Goods here and he has one in his driver and has nothing but good things to say about it. I thought about getting one for my Paradym Triple Diamond to play it a little shorter, but haven’t pulled the trigger yet.

    • Meanwhile, another old Tour Edge guy switches to Callaway for this season. I have a different problem, course dependent set-ups. What I’m wondering is if @dragonsmhas the 8 iron set 5-PW, AW, GW or just 5-PW, GW. Because the PW is 42°, AW 47°, and GW 52°. Because that could potentially be a gap there. The 5-iron to 6-iron length jump is 5/8” instead of 1/2” so you should be careful of that.    @WUTiger the problem most people have with 3-woods is they don’t play them far enough back into their stance. And they usually don’t have enough loft and the shaft is too long. So 3HL, 4 or 5-wood is probably better for most golfers. I do the “Frankenwood” approach. I have both the 3+ and 5 woods. I typically will either add two degrees to the 3+ on 6600 yards or longer courses, or take a degree off the 5-wood on shorter courses than 6300 or so, and use the 5-wood shaft for both. I don’t usually find a situation where I need both the 3 and 5 wood on a course. I don’t play from 7000 yards it’s no fun. Edit: I mostly agree with @WUTiger on the gapping, although a lot of the newer even fixed hosel fairway woods are made better than what we had when we were playing the old Exotics XRails.

    • I did read the fine print tonight. It said replace with “similar features & function”.  8 yeas ago my purchase had features that today are available on the lower end models and the current version of my model has more “bells & whistles” than what I got 8 years ago.  So I am thinking they honored the agreement and I can’t argue the offer. since getting a credit for the full purchase price all I am really out over the past 8 years was the cost of the extended warranty, which was less than a low end  treadmill would have cost me. now the question is which model to replace with.  I’ll stay with Nordic Track or I forfeit the $1,463 credit so I will get Nordic Track.  And they honored the warranty and were not hard to work with which is a plus.
