I'm bidding on a set of irons on eBay (I don't actually expect to win them at this price, and I'm not going any higher), but they've got x-stiff shafts.

I was wondering what the cost, per iron, to replace the shafts (and then obviously the grips too) would be? I'd be replacing them with DGS300s.

I just called my pro shop, and they said $240 for the set + cost of grips. That's a little higher than I'd thought, and at that price I'd obviously rather just get fitted and order my own darn set of clubs.

So that leads me to this question: how much "home work" does anyone do? I had a club regripped the other day for $4 or $5 with a corded V-55. For a full set, you're looking at about $30-35. That doesn't seem "worth it" to me to do at home. I have only one real set of equipment (and the first set I ever used), so it's not like I have to do a whole bunch of work @ home.

How much home repairs, grip changes, etc. do you do?

Beautiful set of irons Erik. I hope you win 'em!

I will always have my grips done by a retailer. Probably everything else too. For those of you who like to tinker you'll regrip, reshaft, check lofts and all that in your workshop and more power to you. I'm the kind of guy who lets the professional do that kind of work.

Next time around I'm going to do what you described. Get fitted and let the manufacturer or the shop owner hassle with the details.

Beautiful set of irons Erik. I hope you win 'em!

The shafts, the fitting, etc. - all reasons I had the seller retract my bid, actually. I'd rather pay $900 for a set of

new , fitted irons with the right shafts. I admit that this is probably a bad thing, but I like to be the first person to use something. I like unwrapping it and then saying "ahh, my first six-iron shot..." And you can bet your ass I wouldn't waste that on a driving range ball, heck no. I'd take 'em right to the course. But ok, back to the question: does anyone do any "home work"?

Erik,

By DGS300 shafts I am assuming you are talking about True Temper Dynamic Golf (sorry I don't quite know all the lingo)? From Golfsmith, a quantity of 1 to 9 is $8.50 each. With SensiCore, $13.95 each. The average grip costs around $2.00 each.

You're right, MJ, and those are some of the costs if I wanted to do it myself. But then I'd also have to add in a butane torch, a shaft puller, epoxy, tape, and a few other items.

Do you do work on your own clubs at home, MJ? How do you like it?

A shaft puller is not needed to remove steel shafts. Yeah, you are looking at around $50.00 for the torch and supplies. I assembled a driver a few months ago. It was quite enjoyable. I have a 3 iron that I need to reshaft, a wedge to assemble and all my grips need replacing. Looks to be a nice winter project.

All you'd need is the PROPANE torch to heat the head...no shaft puller required. You would need some epoxy and double-sided tape. You are looking at about $25 in supplies to be able to reshaft your irons because unless they are coming pre-trimmed, you would need a tubing cutter as well.

I do most of my own repairs except for graphite shafts (can do it but the local guy will do it for me at cost). I definitely regrip my own clubs because we buy the grips by the case and divide them among us which brings the cost down (especially since the cord grips are getting to be so expensive).

I guess I should look at what you are looking at buying on EBAY...

Took a look at it. Great Deal if you can get it, good luck. One other thing to consider if you decide to do it yourself...the 690MB has a .355 TAPER TIP Bore.

Not buying anything on eBay at the moment. We're set to have a Titleist demo day in the indoor golf dome in February sometime - I'll wait until then to see whether I what the 680 or one of the two 690s.

Erik....The dg's would prolly be about $8.00 a shaft. The grips would be cost+ $1.50 each. So your at roughly $100.00 at that point. That leaves about $140.00 for labor. I generally charge $20-$25 per club, depending on what they are. But i also spine, flo, and set to a frequency slope or swing weight to specs. If this is included,$140 for labor is a good deal. If you buy those clubs and plan on a reshaft, make sure you know what kind of service your getting.

Guess you decided against the irons. At least you have a good idea now on cost. If you're gonna get a new set, another way to set your clubs up is, moi matchin. If you have a favorite club in your bag, you have your new irons set up so that they feel and play like your favorite iron from your old set. Might be something for you to check into.

Thanks for the info. I hadn't heard of MOI Matching, and I don't have a particular favorite club. I think I'll go with a pretty standard setup - same swingweights throughout with the properly adjusted lie and lofts. Lies probably a degree upright, lofts probably standard. I'm actually fairly "average" when it comes to my height, swing, etc. For the better player's clubs, anyway.

Thanks for the info, bobkin. I appreciate it, and welcome to the forum!

Shafts are only around 9bucks each? Sheesh, I never knew they were that inexpensive. I'm getting my clubs custom fitted next week, I was kind of worried about the cost if I need to go to X instead of my S300s. Cool!

Once you do you first set the "desire" will grow and grow. I started with just gripping and now have transitioned to building 10+ sets, a bending setup, and multiple spare shafts and heads. On the plus side it's kinda special playing with clubs you have created.  Also makes it quite easy to buy ebay clubs on the cheap. Heads with unpopular shafts etc.

I  re-shaft my wedges because it costs $20 labor for a single club and I like graphite shafts matching the set.  I break the bond using my gas stove and pull the old shaft off wearing pot holders. My work space is the kitchen sink which is why I pay to have my clubs re-gripped. It's cleaner and easier to change a shaft then mess with grip tape in the kitchen.

I JUST NOTICED HOW OLD THIS THREAD IS!
