I played in a 30mph wind yesterday that gusted upwards of 40mph. It was the most harsh wind I've ever experienced.

I was curious if any other avid golfers have tried to combat Mother Natures strongest forces?

played around the 2nd of january last year and the wind was so strong it was almost impossible to walk forwards on the 18th hole after climbing over a ridge, i am reasonably fit but honestly more fragile soles may have ended up having to camp!

dont know what the wind speed was but it would certainly have been over 40mph.

the hole in question was the 18th hole at the braid hills in edinburgh, you climb an almost vertical (no kidding) slope and then the wind whips in to your face - plus it snowed!!

brrr - cold just thinking about it.

I played in 50ish mph. Well not really played. I walked off the course because my ball wouldn't stay on a tee or on the green. The day started off about 20 mph but a front was moving in and when that happens the winds kicks up really high. It doesn't pay off to live next to a mountain range.

I just checked outside and on the weather.com and we have gusts 50-60 mph right now. Wonder if anyone is on the course. It is nice and sunny though.

Who knows the actual mph of how the wind was blowing, but i do remember playing a round in the early spring when the gusts where strong enough to stop you in your tracks and push you off balance. Ironically, it was the best round i played all year so far, i shot 76 that day. I was using an old 9 degree Titliest 975J that really shot the ball off low. Texas tee shots a playing buddy of mine called them. It was a great help.

I played in a college event in Central Washington where the wind was a bit of a factor. Not sure on the mph, but I hit a 3 wood from 123 yds. into the wind, and came up short, and a 9 iron from 206 downwind (that ended up about 20 yards long). On crosswinds, we sometimes could not start the ball left or right enough to avoid trees on one side of the fairway and stay in bounds on the other side of the fairway. Everyone just ended up bunting it like 150 with their driver to keep it in play on crosswind holes. Natural shot shapes had no bearing, trajectory control had no bearing, it was wild. It was a one round exhibition and I think something like 79 or 81 won it. There were some pretty quality D1 programs there too.

Those are pretty similar to the most harsh conditions I've played in. I'm pretty sure I vowed never to play golf again after that day because I was so frustrated. In Oklahoma, we have to take what we get though. If I would have played yesterday, it would have set a new record for me because the gusts were up to 50mph during the day (it was 80-90mph last night).

Vegas gets pretty windy, a few days ago there was constant 30-35mph winds followed by a few nasty gusts of what would probably be 50+ (knocked a few trees over).

Playing wise, I've done 25mph with strong enough gusts to move my ball on the green before I putt.

Played at Bandon Dunes in the middle of a storm. Rain was falling sideways, a 40 yard pitch would move 10 feet off line, putting was near impossible as the wind would knock you off balance... yeah, tough day.

At least it was Bandon Dunes.

I'd love to play that one.

I had a hole in one on a 150 yard par 3. I hit 3 iron. I was embarrassed by the blurb in the local sports page. The wind was at least 40 MPH but that doesn't get recorded. Sounded like I couldn't squash a grape.

I played at the home of an LPGA Tour event in New Jersey ( ShopRite at SeaView ). The wind was blowing what must have been 30-40 MPH pretty steadily.

I hit a 5-iron (normally a comfortable 185, and 200 if I try to hit it 95-100%) from 120 yards on one hole, straight into the wind. It landed on the front of the green, 45 feet short of the hole.

So... yeah. Basically a 100-yard flushed 5-iron. Not many holes played straight downwind (most were cross-wind), but one that was quartering let me hit a gripped down pitching wedge from 160. It bounced over the green.

In a college tourney once the wind started out at 30-40 mph for the first 12 holes. Then once we hit 13, the wind went ballistic (there were tornado warnings that day) and hit up to 68 mph. It was truly an unbelievable sight to see. It was so windy that it was difficult to breath. Anybody wearing a hat had to put it inside their bag and using the stand bag was useless. I never saw the ball do some many weird things (even on putts and chips).

The classic is on the course we were playing at I get up to the 16th hold and bust out a driver. Then nail another driver off the deck. Then hit a knockdown 8 iron that changes levels in the air about 5 time and lands just short of the green. On a par 4.

The very next day in 70 degree weather with no wind I hit driver, sand wedge into the SAME hole. One of my friends that played for another college shot 1 under in that crap and to me that's one of the best rounds I had ever heard about.

30+ knot wind in winter about 4 years ago. Had a tailwind on the last hole where I hit a 3 wood about 270 yards which is 50 yards farther than the second closest drive with any other club I have had on that hole in about 100rounds.

About 10 years ago a hurricane came inland of Ocean City maryland just after labor day and the Mrs and I were there for a week of golf.I forget the exact name of the course but there was an inner and outer course at the place and we were booked for the 36 hole special.By the time we were done there were steady winds of 60 miles an hour but thankfully no rain as the remnants of the storm actually went west of the Del Marva penunsula.Of course all the course workers laughed like hell at us but we had a ball!!

The club where I work is world renowned for strong winds you can count on from November to March every year. We have a 145y par 3 that plays directly into the wind. Normally a 9 iron to the middle of the green for me, I've had on occasion as much as a 5 iron in my hand with me. Usually it's a punch 7 or maybe 6. We get some serious wind here.

Played Wolf Creek in Mesquite, NV on January 28, 2008. The wind and sand/dirt was incredible. Had a full head of hair when I started, now have a bald spot. My head was sandblasted. Could not keep a hat on.
Seriously had my first 300 yard drive. Normally about 210. The wind grabbed it and it kept going and going. A day of memories.
