My distance is extremely weak. I don't do much working out, and I realize I'm not big (5'7" 140 lbs) but I do a lot of sports and I'm in pretty good shape, and there a lot of people smaller then me who drive the ball 30 yards past me and I don't know why. I just don't. I'm going tonight to have my dad check out my swing, he believes I don't get enough shoulder turn and don't get through the ball enough. Here are two snapshots from videos I took at the range two weeks ago. My driver goes about 220-230 on a good one, and I'm struggling to have my 6 iron as my 150 club! I know, maybe I'm just not a big hitter - I realize that, BUT, all my clubs last year were going 10 yards furthur then this year, I seem to have loss distance. I've gained a TON more accuarcy this year. I hit almost every fairway, but I struggle to hit GIR's because I'm constantly 190-200 yards out on PAR 4's, so I'm hitting a 3 wood into these greens!

THIS IS THE SAME SWING.

Thanks for any tips or something to try with my swing.

I am no expert but in your "at the top" image it looks like you may have a slight reverse pivot which will rob you of distance and send shots spraying - you might wanna try to really feel your weight on the inside of your right heel and then transfer it over to start the downswing - just a suggestion.

Ok, I can try that.

I'm not sure if that's what it is though because I don't spray shots. I may draw a ball a little more than I want or fade a ball a little more than I want, but I rarely ever hit it WAY right or WAY left.

You need to get your feet on the ground and rotate your shoulders and hips as one unit. After you get that down you need to work on your lag.

You do not need to be a big guy to put power on the ball. It is important that you obtain an understanding of the proper technique to generate maximum clubhead speed while making solid contact. If you watch the Tour you will see some golfers that look like they are going to fall asleep before they get to their downswing..but the ball still carries 275 yards. Thats a result of great contact.

i suggest you watch the videos on this site

http://www.rdbgolftips.com/

That instructor, Ron del Barrio, is very helpful and even by watching those dozen videos you will very likely see improvement.

It's hard to tell from just two pictures but the biggest thing I notice is that your upper body and lower body are not in sync. Your legs have finished the swing by the time your upper body is making contact with the ball. I had the exact same problem. It could definitely be affecting your distance.

There's a good drill to fix this. It is swinging with your feet together. It will quiet down your lower legs and get you a feel for a much more consistent swing without all the hip movement.

You may also have a problem with hip slide as it does seem like you have a touch of a reverse pivot. Not huge, as your spine angle seems pretty much straight up and down at the top instead of pointing towards the target. A good way to stop hip slide is to hit balls off a side hill lie with your feet on flat ground. If your hips slide out too much you'll chunk the crap out of it.

Both of these drills will quiet down your hips and with everything in sync you'll hit the ball farther.

HAHA CG, that is weak.

Just kidding, Maybe some lessons will do you good, get to the gym a bit more, and maybe theres a certain spot in your swing where you are losing all power possible.

Most people try to accelerate the club starting from the top using their arms. The result is that the clubhead is actually decelerating by the time it approaches the ball.

From the top there should be no force applied to the club. The arms must be passive, arm muscles loose and inactive. The lower body pivots, gradually accelerating the clubhead to maximum speed at impact. If you perform this correctly the swing feels as effortless as a falling pendulum and you will hear a swooshing sound that starts at the bottom, not at the top.

The pros use some other tricks to increase their clubhead speed such as timing their wrist release and accentuating an upward thrust of the left side which can lead to injury.

I worked on getting some more lag. Taking it back a little bit more over my shoulder, and trying to get some more clubhead speed. I saw a bit of a difference, but I wasn't hitting it solid on most shots because my time was off. I'm going to work on that for a week or two and see if my shots start going a little bit further. I don't expect to be hitting it 280, I know I'm not strong enough. But I think I have a good enough swing (I know I'm FAIRLY fundamentally sound) and I'm a good enough player to hit my driver 250 yards...I don't think that's asking too much, so I will see where it gets me. I started hitting it 230 with dead range balls towards the end so we'll see.

Its a lot to do with your arms gone beyond your shoulder turn, basically arm lift,There is no reason to take a club back that far, your losing a lot of power there because your gone beyond the coil of your body,a three quarter swing to you is actually a proper swing, try it,you will have a lot more distance, remember when taking the club back say three quarter swing(which is full swing for you) and go,tape it and watch how your swing looks a lot better, your over swinging.A lot of people try to swing like pro"s,pro's train every day and are able to take the club back further, but they do it right.A proper backswing is where the power is got.

often i repeat myself on this topic 2 things

make or buy a weighted club - make sure you make smooth full swings with it - adjust weight as required - i use a 1kg disc on a pitching wedge with a lot of masking tape - this helps for a variety of reasons - no time to elaborate

by the longdrive bible by sean fister - its £10 / $20 - Weak dollar and worth every penny or cent

Recent studies show swinging with a weighted club lowers your swing speed.

CG - basically, you're just trying way too hard, your swing is WAY too long. Your hips open too much on the backswing. They need to provide some resistance/torsion against your torso. If someone were standing behind your feet line, they should only get a peek at the front of your right hip - you're showing them the whole belt buckle. On your downswing, your feet need to stay more grounded. Your right foot being so far off the ground at impact tells me you're just spinning around. That is likely the reason your lag is completely gone, too.

Take a good look at a pro's swing. Their backswing is so short, when you really pay attention, it will surprise you, and their lower bodies are very quiet. Stay grounded, smooth, strong and compact. There's no reason you can't hit it a good distance, but you need to throttle back your expectations. At your size and current swing, you're many, many weeks away from hitting it 250. You need to set balance, rhythm and "lack of killing it" as your focus. If you visit the range every day hoping to get 250, it's only going to inhibit your progress.

Nothing in the swing is done at the expense of balance.

This guy's tips seem good. I question the head movement but see the logic. Does anyone here hit the ball with their head already turning?

I think that only relates to swinging a weighted club directly before you swing your actual club.

In regards to practicing, it wont lower your swing speed on the course.

here's my six iron swing from behind I stopped it. I don't see how my swing is too long? http://www.o2designz.com/forum/uploa...1213987130.jpg
