Seriously, let's get real :

The Golf Channel needs to get some better programming.

I mean, it's great that they show live golf, yeah, but at night, it's like the same crap every night. Why not show some instructional films, a different one every night? Why not re-play final days of classic tournaments? I'm saying to do this EVERY NIGHT, instead of showing Top 10 Nature vs. Golfers five evenings in a row.

Does anyone else agree? Plus, the INFOMERCIALS SUCK!

I agree that some of the programming is sometimes weak and that the infomercials are annoying and far too frequent, but . . .

. . . isn't it cool that there is an entire channel dedicated to the activity we are so passionate about?

  • First and second round (and sometimes third and fourth) coverage of the PGA and LPGA, Eurpoean Tour coverage, and even tour coverage I don't watch like Nationwide and Champions;
  • Personally, I love "The Big Break" (and I don't watch any other "reality" TV shows), and I'm looking forward to "Highway 18". But "Road Trip" are "Fore Inventors Only" were disappointing;
  • An entire news broadcast dedicated to just golf news;
  • "Golf Fitness" presented by TPI is pretty good;
  • Even though I don't watch them because I don't like to mess with what my pro teaches me (I have a small brain that gets confused easily ), the instructional shows.

BUT, there is room for improvement. And if someone was going approach TGC about improving programming, complaining about the infomercials probably isn't a good strategy because: (a) they don't cost TGC anything to produce; and (b) they provide income.

Instead, convince TGC to replace some of the repetitive re-runs with original programming, like:

  • Coverage of the Ladies European Tour;
  • Coverage of NCAA Men's and Women's tournaments, and national championship;
  • Longer coverage of the LPGA;
  • How about a 30 minute show that profiles 1 course per show: Bethpage, Bandon Dunes, Chambers Bay, etc.;
  • Similarly, how about a show profiling 1 pro per show;
  • An actual equipment show instead of an infomercial masquerading as a gear show;
  • How come "The Wandering Golfer" ended up on The Fine Living channel and TGC? You can't tell me it wasn't pitched to TGC first.

And if you are reading this TGC programming executives, I'm available for a lucrative executive position on relatively short notice . . .

EDIT: Oh, and how about HD for all programming and not sharing an HD channel with Versus.

I think if they dedicated a half hour show for an individual company to market their line could be good for both the user, the company, and the golf channel.

That would be a huge income stream for them.

Speaking of the Golf channel - anyone else having problems with the volume during the diff commercial segmants - like the rules or other instructional quick tips? When the rules of golf segmant comes on, the volume goes just about dead. I'm in Guam and I'm pretty sure everything for me in on tape delay - but didn't know if it is my local cable distributor or the channel itself.

The Golf Channel was once one of the best prime time stations (for me).

Peter Kessler had great presence and conducted knowledgeable interviews.
The guest list read like the World Golf Hall of Fame and Golf Digest's top 10 teaching pros.
When they let Kessler go, the story was that he was too big for his britches or some nonsense.
TGC simply stopped investing in Production quality.

I DVR the "Playing Lessons from the Pros" but I don't watch it live unless it's a PGA event.

I hope they are losing scads of money with that weak lineup of talking heads.
Well, I do think Kelly has a nice ass but a broadcast anchor she is not.

I love the founder but there's a limit to everything.

The Golf Channel could learn a lot from the Food Network when it comes to original and interesting programing. But I think there in lies the problem. TGC doesn't have the budget nor the overall potential revenue stream of the Food Network.

I like being able to get the tournaments on Thursday and Friday.....but thats about it. I really dont care about seeing "Tigers 10 Greatest Shots" for the 100th time that week. Oh....I watch Golf Central as well. Just way too many re-treads. Even the instruction shows look like they were filmed 10 years ago.

I agree.

I love when they show the recaps of final tournaments. But I would also enjoy them showing the final day of some classic tournaments. Cut them down into a 2 hr show and let us relive the sunday afternoon.

Agreed - the infomercials suck...but sometimes they make me laugh. Anyone see that HD sunglasses infomercial? Completely asinine.

Never even thought about that! I'd love to see NCAA tourneys. Do they even get any kind of coverage anywhere?

One thing I hate is Highlights. I hate when they cover a whole tourney by just showing a few highlights.

I love watching the Ultimate matches, because it makes you feel like you are right there on the course watching the pros. I like to see how they approach playing an entire hole, I don't just want to see a good 30 foot put or a 300 yard drive in a highlight reel.

I like the idea of some of the classic tournament coverage.

IMO, I think they're pushing a little too much sex appeal for my taste. Noticed how on The Big Break there was only one real unattractive lady (Lori). I'd rather see contestants with better game than looks. There's also that new show with the two blond girls running around. Just seems silly.

Agree 100 percent about the infomercials. If i have to hear they guy selling the hammer to go "BOOOM!" after he hits it one more time Im putting a javelin through my tv.

GolfWeek.com streams a small amount of the national championship. But they only have cameras on 3 holes.

What's the last new HD channel that D* hasn't carried? The current VSGLF-HD will become Versus-HD and Golf-HD will have to get picked up seperately.

      I honestly believe if they play longer tees by 300-400 yards, closer to or over 7,000 yards, more rough, tougher greens, women's golf will become much more gripping.  BTW, if it weren't for Scottie killing it right now, men's golf isn't exactly compelling.

      Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
