Anyone dropped the 5-iron yet for a hybrid?

I am debating whether or not to let it go, for now. I can hit it 200 yards off the tee fairly consistent, but off the fairway is another story. I carry NO 4-iron and my 21* hybrid is awesome and my 6-iron is great all around. I hit a 5-iron from 185 yds. and I sliced it off of the fairway. It was still in play and an ok spot, but have no confidence in it. I get scared sometimes hitting it because I shank it, slice it, top it, chunk it, and hook it every so often. I feel that getting a hybrid would be more versatile. But what club could I use to get out of trees or a tight spot? If so, what hybrid works for you? Thanks

I'm seriously considering dropping the 5I and just go with 6I and 4H, that way carry an extra wedge.

What do I do when its windy out and I need to keep the trajectory low? I know hybrids are designed to get the ball in the air, but how do you keep them from getting TOO high?

You are an 18 and hit it long. Just put some extra practice time on your 5, maybe with a focus on rythym and I bet you will get it quick. If you still can't hit it when you are an 8 get rid of it.

I am a semi-traditionalist. I am in favor of dropping a 3i for a 3H, and am hesitant to drop a 4i for a 4H. There is NO WAY I will drop a FIVE IRON for a hybrid.

Personally I am all for the 1,2 and 3 hybrid since I really doubt I could hit a 1 or 2 iron anyway. I do believe 4 and up should all be irons. I find it a bit extreme that I see these sets that are hybrids through 7, then again I am probably a bit extreme with the 1 - but it was just something I had to have.

I'm kinda shocked at how most people prefer hybrids over irons. IMO irons are much, much easier to hit than hybrids.

Also, I'm shocked at how some people carry 4 wedges. I mean IMO carrying a 50, 54, 58, and 64 is just unbelievable. I can understand carrying a 50 and a 58. But jeez, 4 wedges? That sounds insane to me. I'm not trying to cause arguments or anything here, I'm just stating my opinion.

I was thinking about adding a 50 to my arsenal (which would leave me w/ the exact lofts you put), but I have nothing to drop, so nope. Most I'll ever carry is 3 + PW. (Although I might get a 48* in the future to replace my PW.)

I carry a 3,4,5 Hybrid and love them all. I was never good with my long irons and Hybrids have been a savior for me.

I might carry 5 wedges depending on the course and how I feel that day.

One element of enjoying golf for me is to be able to change my set up. 5 wedges is a little crazy, but it will be something different and probably won't last long. Changing the set up keeps golf interesting as if it were a new experience, golf can get a little stale if you've been playing it a long time. Why always play with the same set up? Sometime I want to go play with just a 5W, a 4H and a SW, do something different.

I have a 5 iron but occasionally I take it out of my bag and just use my 25 degree hybrid by choking down on the club.

If I have tree trouble I can put the hybrid in the back of my stance and angle the club face so that I can see the trajectory will be low enough to go under trees. I also hit my driver from the fairway to hit a low cut shoot under trees.

That is a good thing since you most likely will be able to work irons. But you are definately in the minority. Most people prefer the hybrids and find them easier to hit. That is why every major brand has come out with them.

I can hardly argue with those who advocate more practice time on the range with one's long irons or lessons. Certainly hitting a mid or long iron pure is a a sweet thing. And I remember doing it once or twice.

Seriously, I found that the consistency I could enjoy with hybrids too seductive to resist. While I love the idea of carrying and hitting long irons, I have replaced most of my long clubs with hybrids, including my 5 iron.

And for those who think hybrids can't be worked, I am here to say that they can; perhaps not as easily as a butterknife 2 iron, but I can hit a high shot, draw, low hook, etc., pretty much at will. I have seen a friend, much more skilled than I, hit many different shots with his hybrid.

Indeed, there is a reason so many hybrids and hybrid sets are being offered by manufacturers.

I just started getting into the hybrids. Was adding too many strokes with my 3 and 4 iron out of the rough.....to the point where I was hesitant to even pull them out. I have no problems with my hybrids now and am able to work the ball more so than I ever was with my irons.

I've alway hit my woods well and have been able to work them as needed so it was an obvious choice for me. I have taken my 3,4 and 5 iron out of my bag. The 5i may go back in as I am only carrying 12 clubs at this point (will be 13 when I place my new 20° in the bag (was delivered with a broken shaft ).

This hybrid talk is getting out of control!!!!

Replacing a 7 wood, 2 iron, 3 iron or MAYBE a 4 iron. But a 5 iron?!

Give me a break...

    • It may not be surprising that in the previous 7,064 posts, this particular point has been discussed. To which I will counter: If we're talking about results, why only the majors? Unless you know something that I don't, neither of us are in any position to judge whether Woods or Nicklaus lived their overall life better, not that such a thing is even objectively measurable, nor is it relevant to the discussion.
    • As we've had to tell other people, the topic is which is the better GOLFER, not human being.
    • Wordle 1,056 4/6 ⬛⬛🟨⬛⬛ ⬛⬛🟨🟨🟨 ⬛🟨🟨🟨⬛ 🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩
    • Woods won 14 majors in his first decade, then messed up his private life + numerous unforced, self-punishing auto (and other) accidents and injuries. Result: 1 major in his second decade. So, while Woods was the greater "natural" talent, Nicklaus was the greater golfer as measured by results because he understood that golf was just part of how well you live your overall life.
    • If you watch the video/s of ‘Tiger’s greatest shots’ it’s undeniably clear that Tiger is far superior than any golfer that’s ever played. The helicopter follow through shot from the bunker, the second at Pebble Beach where he cut the uphill corner and made it to the green and so many others. Jack simply could’ve never hit those shots.  Hell at the Skins Match around the  90’s with Jack, Tiger and Mark O’Meara Tiger hits a shot and Jack says, ‘ Man that kid can really hit that ball.’ O’Meara says ‘ He’s (22), he supposed to hit it like that.’ Jack then says, ‘ Well, we never hit it like that when we were that age .’ Tiger’s the GOAT. By far.
