Same boat - have not played a 3 wood in about 5 years now, but courses I am playin gnow have plenty opportunity for a 3 wood to come into use (5 wood often too short for a par 5, or too safe on a par 4 off the tee)

From what I have seen... (but not tried)

Callaway X 2008 - very nice looking club at address. Good price.

Ping G10 - sits lovely and square at address, choice of shaft options.

Callaway FT - different looking to any other Callaway wood as has a traditional looking hosel compared to the usual S2H2 equipment.

Taylormade Burner (2007) - I have seen this in the normal and TP versions. TP has a smaller head and heavier shaft, which I preferred. Longer shaft than most worries me as I don't want a 3 wood knocking up near driver length, I want a decent gap club.

Titleist 906F4 - lovely to look at, and currently at good prices. My concern is that I sliced the shit out fo everything I hit with my old 905R driver, and concerned that the fairways react the same way. (would love a 906F4 3 wood (15.5 deg) and a 19 deg 585H to replace my 5 wood)

From what I have hit;

My old Wilson 1200 GE - Shit, just plain shit. Can't hit it for love nor money. Shaft is all over the place.

A mates Cobra - ugle head that looks dented - new Cobras look the same too IMHO

A mates Callaway Big Bertha 2007 - pretty nice, crisp feel. Ugly alignment aid when looking at it in the pro shop, but in actual use, you don't notice it. It was a reg flex when I need stiff, so resulted in a high right, but with good distance.

I am swaying towards Callway X, Titleist 906F4 or Ping G10...

All in all, there is a huge choice out there, each reacting and feeling different to the other. As I have seen, the only way to make a decision is to get out there and try the clubs - not just off a mat, actually on the course to check off a tee, tight lie, rough etc.

Hopefully you got some help from that ramble!!

My take on the two I have....

Been playing the G10 but just recently switched to the TM Burner (2007 model). The TM is a more versatile club.....good off the tee but great off the fairway. The G10 is a great club off the tee but only o.k. off the fairway.

I recently put the Nike SQ 3 wood in my bag. I will never use a driver again (unless i can get the same results from the Nike SQ 5900). I'm not a big hitter but can put the ball out there 260+ on the fly with it dead straight. I can't believe I waited as long as I did to get it. And in the 3 wood version the square look of the club is not as awkward at set up as I would have originally thought. If nothing else give it a try. And I also hit EVERY 3 wood on the market and ended up with the Nike.

I've noticed this in shopping for 3 woods lately. I'm confused as to what degree to get. I was leaning towards the TM Burner 15*, but now I have second thoughts.

If in doubt, get the 15. The others are 'strong' 3W's.

I love mine. I just can't hit fwy woods off the umm...fairway. Imagine that.

I recently decided to start carrying a 3 wood again. Picked up a brand new Sonartec GS Tour 14* for $80. These were originally about $350 but the company went out of business. They're fantastic clubs if you can find one. It's by far the best 3 wood I've ever played. Nice and straight and loooooong!

906F4. Considered by many to be the finest fairway wood on the market. Right now I play a Titleist PT Bore-Thru 15* 3-wood and its OK, but the head on it is really small and I dont hit it very well. When I hit the ball solidly it flies really high and goes about 220 yards, but I dont hit it solidly very often.
Im considering upgrading to a new 3-wood next year, hoping that the newer ones have bigger heads which would be more forgiving the my old PT is.

I've had extensive experience with 3 3-woods.

2007 Cobra Speed LD F 15.5 w/ stock nv
Definitely quite easy to hit, face is a bit deep for my liking off the deck, stock shaft was 55g and if I went at it at all, the ball would balloon-I didn't like it, decently workable, great off the tee.
Titleist 906F4 15.5 w/ titleist diamana blue
Great off the deck, shallow face, a bit less forgiving than the cobra, very high ball flight and not the longest (probably in part due to the shaft), very workable.
Sonartec GS Tour 15 w/ stock red Ice
My favorite face height - in between the F4 and speed LD F. Perfect for the tee and off the deck. Forgiveness is in between the cobra and titleist - definitely forgiving enough. Great balance between workability and forgiving - has a great amount of both. Flight is quite high and distance is in between the cobra and titleist but closer to the cobra - I'm planning to switch out the shaft which will help.

GS Tour - 15* -GD Red Ice
Rescue TP - 17* - Fujikura TP

I have a Titliest 15 degree 906 F2 PT fairway wood. It's an awesome club. I can reach a lot of par 5's in 2 with it but more importantly for me are these factors - consider these for yourself before your purchase

1) Great off the tee for tight fairways and short par 4's
2) Great of the deck with clean and tight lies
3) actually great out of minimal rough as well - saved many a par 5 for me when my drive rolled off the short stuff into the thicker mess
4) HUGE importance to me - SQUARE FACE ANGLE. From most club manufacturers you have to purchase "tour performance" models to get a club with a square face.
I find this annoying - it makes working ball left to right or vice versa virtually impossible for me unless I totally exaggerate my stance and or swing. I naturally draw the ball so a closed face can turn that into a nasty hook - but basically I want to CHOOSE the ball flight - not have it predetermined for me.
5) Ball trajectory - I hit my 3 wood about 230 yards worth of carry - however the Titliest is a low penetrating ball flight which gives me some roll on the shot - sometimes what seems to be as much as 15 or 20 yards depending on the conditions. For me this is a plus - if I draw it - it rolls - if I need to land a little softer I cut the ball a little and takes some edge off it. - with out the factors above I couldn't do this as well. i had a regular burner before and i hit every ball high and really had to try to work the ball flight.
that being said the burner was an easier club to hit and went straight even if I didn't catch it perfect - that might be important to you. I choose the Titliest driver for the same reasons of square face angle and workability.

**quick footnote - I had a really good shaft put in the club as well and feel like matching that component up is very important.

I play the one in my signature line.

It does okay....good tee shot substitute for my overly stiff and low driver.

Fairway play is okay, though a good lie is a must.....suckish results from anything more than the first cut.....from their it's hybrid time.

It's going to be updated/replaced here in the very near future. I'm thinking about some different options....mainly the PING G10 series.

I'll most likely go with the PING G10 3W in 15.5 degrees.....however the 4W is really.....reallly appealing to me now. More loft but the same shaft and clubhead size.....hmmmmm. Going with 4W would give me some really nice loft and I could forgo a 5W and keep every club that's currently in my bag.
