Anyone using lob wedge for all greenside chipping?

Does anyone like a lob wedge as their primary club for greenside chipping? I was thinking of concentrating on one club for everything from ~60 yds to greenside (excluding traps). Read about Daly and Woods doing this. Seems to work well, but requires a very precise setup and swing to be consistent. I like the idea of no indecision as to which club to use.

I wouldn't say I always use my 60, but I heavily favor it around the greens.

Aaron Baddeley use a 60 for every greenside shot as well.

However, I thought Tiger uses his 56 quite a bit as well (but wouldn't doubt that im wrong).

I do. I guess it's easier to take a lower lofted club and hit a bump and run, but I'm better just by shootin' for the pin.

I am all a bout the bump and run with lots of green to work with, anything else I use my 54* I always keep the ball as low as possible, because I don't feel comfortable lobing it up high in the air. I favor my PW now.

Definately not. I rarely use my 60*. For some shots, I may favour my 54*, for example between two or three different shots I might pick the SW just out of preference. But, in general, the less loft I can get away with the better.

It's great.

I can hit every shot I want with one club. Ps. How do you like your 755's? They're great.

It's great.

the one thing i could never do was keep it low.

so now i use it the majority of the time, but if i want a low roller i hit the PW or even the 56* for some reason i can control hight with that

Chipping for me is always as low as possible with as much run (and as little swing) as possible so i use from PW to LW depending on the lie.

definitely not. I prefer to use the bump and run technique. Log wedge only for shots that need less roll or are over a bunker.

I adhered to this for a while but have abandoned it. I probably hit 60% of my chips with my 60, but i use my pitching and gap wedges a lot as well.

- If I am in the fringe or fairway its almost always a gap wedge
- Steep uphill lie and i will use gap or pitching wedge
- Level lies in the rough i use lob.
- Sandtrap i use Lob, long bunker its a gap wedge.

I look at distance to green and distance from edge of green to hole.
Club selection depends on this. I may use a 5 or 6 or 7 or etc.
The greens I play on usually have a lot of break and are hard to stop a chip close. I would not recommend expecting a wedge to always get the same result.
Play the shot you have, not the club you prefer.
Read the green, the distance factor, then make your choice.
I have a playing partner who has a non-conforming wedge ("Rip-stop" I think). It will stop every thing within 6 inches of where hits . Of course he can't control where he hits, so results are varied (usually bad).
I hit chips like putts, speed and direction are key.
Practice. Practice. Practice. That usually works no matter what you chose.

Nope! Definitely not for all greenside chipping...

I learned many years ago from a caddie at Carnoustie that the best and most reliable approach for most golfers (leaving the pros outta this) was mastering the PW around the greens and the 8-iron for the bump and run. Back then, there wasn't the attraction with the 60*, and flop shots, as there is now-a-days.

Now, having said that, I use a 56* around the greens in the rough at the suggestion of my son instead of the PW. So far, it works.

I recently just switched to using my 60 around the green for all shots.
If I want to bump and run it I just deloft it. Using one wedge I feel more confident in what the ball is going to do as far as roll out and checking.

I play my 58* SM Vokey almost exclusively for all green side shots and pretty much from 85 and in. I also like my Vokey GW for longer approach shots and for knock downs. I personally believe a 58* wedge is the most versatile wedge there is.

Really depends on the shot. I try to use only as much loft as I need to but in all honesty I'm all about gratuitous loft. I think I use my 54 and 60 about the same amount. I'm pretty good with flop shots so I love using my 60. I will try to use my 22* (when I'm right up against the rough on the fringe) and anywhere from a 54-9 for bump and runs around the green. I mostly use the 54 for bump and runs though because I can deloft it and hold off my release effectively. Chipping is one of my strengths so I like playing many different kinds of shots with my 54 and 60.

No, the LOB wedge is too sensitive to the ball's lie. I try to only use it if I have to go over an obstacle. If I know the course has deeper rough around the greens, the LOB stays out of the bag so that I'm not tempted to use it.

i used to stick with only the lob wedge.

then i started using my short irons to chip and noticed that it takes much less effort to get the ball close.

      A bit of background. The Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) runs an annual event known as "Team Play." It is a wildly popular match play competition where Men's Clubs across the region put together teams of 20+ golfers together to compete against other clubs in a 16 vs. 16 match. In any given year, approximately 80-100 clubs will participate. Each club is grouped into "pods" of 4, and will play 6 total matches - one home and one away match against the other 3 clubs. The winning club from each pod advances to the Team Play Playoffs - a single elimination format - until a winner is crowned.  Antelope Valley Country Club just advanced to the championship match for the 3rd consecutive year. They won the championship in both 2022 and 2023.  Based on my review of the match history from the past 3 years (linked below), they have won 21 consecutive team matches. Keep in mind, these are handicapped matches, so this is not just a case where a group of sticks bands together to dominate the poor amateurs other SoCal clubs. Even if these guys are grinders who never quit, play their best under pressure and routinely putt the lights out, the law of averages still say that a streak of that nature is mathematically impossible.  Is there any plausible explanation beyond institutionalized sandbagging throughout the club?       Interesting that Scottie is #10 on the all time money list and he's been on the PGAT for 4 years. Of course, purses are bigger now, but  neat to look at non-the-less.  The list of top 18 money winners in PGA Tour history has plenty of surprises This list is updated through the 2024 RBC Heritage. To add, Scottie won 4.5 million at the Players, Jack played 44 seasons and won a little of 5 million on course.
