did anybody catch Faldo last week at the Barclay's when he jokingly said if Casey makes this 40 footer he's on the team? Casey putts, puts it in. Faldo, immediately tries to downplay it, but looks like he kept his word.

Picking Poulter will also add fuel to the rumor that he gave Poulter "the nod" that he was on the team. Particularly since Poulter failed to even make the cut this week.

I missed the Casey comment from earlier.

As an unrelated side note, at the new conference, Faldo said Casey was on a plane and hadn't been notified yet.

I was surprised he picked both. I thought he would go with Clarke and Nick Dougherty. He stated that Casey has been putting lights out the last few weeks and that he has been great all year from tee to green. He was just waiting for the flat stick to come alive.

As for Poulter, this give the Americans a great chance. Just point your camera. You don't even have to click and he's bound to melt down. Kidding of course.

It should be a great Ryder Cup. I like to see the young guys and first time players, personally. In the long run, I think it will help make them better.

I think Darren Clarke should have been in the team but it looks like a case of too little too late.Everyone knows what they have to do to get in automatically so those who dont are taking a chance.Poulter and Casey are both fine matchplay golfers and the Europeans (I hate writing that word, why not just GB & Eire ? } look to have a strong team

The thing is Lefty Casey should be in. He lets himself down in strokeplay tournaments by having nightmare holes,he probably hits as many birdies as anyone which is what matchplay is all about,

Poulter should have been the one to make way for Clarke . He wont be the same without his designer gear anyway

Best pics imo, Poults has been consistently solid this season, Darren got hot in one week which imo is not enough to warrent a wild card pick.

Well, Clarke has won twice this year, so he was hot at least 2 weeks.

Neither Poulter nor Casey can say that. And Clarke has a good Ryder Cup record. If anything, I'd say Poulter got picked based solely on his finish at the Open.

As an American, I cheer that Faldo goofed by not picking D. Clarke.

But as a pure golf fan I cannot believe Clarke didn't make the team. If he were American he would have met the criteria Zinger is looking for I would think. He's a Ryder Cup veteran who is playing well at the moment,,,,it's quite literaly a "No Brainer", and Faldo missed the boat!

Faldo has made another blunder in my book by expecting Harrington to step up and be a great leader for the team. I don't know Harrington and he is obviously taken his game to a higher level, but if Faldo thinks he's going to be another Seve for him he's smoking something illegal,,lol!

Bottom line is this is a great move for the American team with Clarke on the sidelines. Lets just hope Zinger isn't smoking the same stuff Faldo is when he picks!

To be fair, it was a 22 footer.

Casey and Poulter are the two best picks.

Nick Faldo handed his two European Ryder Cup wildcards to England's Paul Casey and Ian Poulter...

A bit surprised Darren Clarke was left out, what with his recent form, Ryder Cup experience (5 caps I believe) and his excellent matchplay game.

just to add the completed team for interest:

Padraig Harrington (Ire)
Lee Westwood (Eng)
Sergio Garcia (Spa)
Henrik Stenson (Swe)
Robert Karlsson (Swe)
Miguel Angel Jimenez (Spa)
Graeme McDowell (NIre)
Justin Rose (Eng)
Soren Hansen (Den)
Oliver Wilson (Eng)
Ian Poulter (Eng)
Paul Casey (Eng)

Nick Faldo handed his two European Ryder Cup wildcards to England's Paul Casey and Ian Poulter...

Don't worry, I merged this topic with the other one in and moved it to Tour Talk.

As for the picks, I was a little surprised for sure. While Casey and Poulter are good picks, Faldo opened himself up for criticism if both guys don't play well. If Clarke would have gotten the nod and then went on to struggled at Valhalla, he wouldn't have been criticized much because he has a great Ryder Cup record and has won twice in 2008. He was almost a lock in many people's minds, including myself. Poulter only has one top 10 on the PGA Tour in 2008, and he only has one top 10 on the European Tour in 2008. That's shaky ground for sure. At least Casey comes in playing pretty well which is something Poulter can't necessarily say. The European side is still the heavy favorite, but without Clarke, the team loses a little muster.

I was a little surprised Clarky was left out, as his partnerships with Westwood have always done well, and he's playing well.

However, I'm glad we have given the young guys the chance, and whilst neither have set the world alight this year, they are damn fine golfers.
Poult's narrowly missed out on the Open dont forget......had Harrington not played out of his skin on the back 9, it was Poults for the taking.

I'm just glad that the whinging whining Montgomerie isnt there this year, he isnt playing well enough and I cant stand his smug petulant manner.

Is it just me ?

I thought he'd go Casey and Clarke.

Poulter and Casy is no big surprise, both top players who play well in match play and have had reasonable seasons.

Clarke's two wins put him well in contention but in fairness Poulter's 2nd at the Open was probably the equal of Clarke's wins (especially given the manner in which he fought for the title down the stretch.)

Monty was never going to make it, poor and inconsistant all season. Nic Dougherty was more likely, what a charge he made yesterday.

Europe will win this one comfortably - I think the USA will need to rope in South America and Canada to help them out...

    • I’m not sure I agree. It’s just what the majority find more entertaining. Most people prefer women’s gymnastics over men in the Olympics. How much hype is there with the men’s compared to the women’s? I bet you can rattle off several big names in women’s gymnastics and only a handful of men. Women’s tennis …same thing. And sure enough, their purses are the same. However, WNBA, awful…LPGA, not near as much interest than PGA. Don’t think it’s really that complicated IMO.

    • If you walk up to a food/drink kiosk at Magic Kingdom and ask the person for a cup of "magic water" they will give you a small cup of Sprite for free. About 3 fingers worth. They don't sell alcohol at MK anymore so I go over to one of the courses while she hangs out there.
    • This isn't some kind of natural fact. It's a lot more complicated than this implies.
