Anybody ever played with a golfer that is unique or unusual in some manner besides the way they score?

I've played with a guy in a wheelchair once. He apparently was good enough at one time to qualify for the PGA Tour but tragically was paralyzed in an auto accident a few weeks before he was to play his first tournament.

I've also played with an older guy at a municipal course that was legally blind. Not totally blind, but legally blind meaning his corrected vision in both eyes was 20/200 or worse. He could find his way around the course without walking into a lake or anything obvious like that but he needed his partners to line him up, watch his ball, find his shots for him, etc. He wasn't too bad really...

Nothing else unusual really pops into mind except for one person that had a rather high profile career.

So, any good stories?

nothing extremely unusual comes to mind, but the best golfer i've played with has an unusual looking swing. very open and hunched over stance, very wide swing. he has tons of power with a low ball flight on his irons. at the time he was 21 and claimed to have a scratch rating. he easily shot 73 and 75 on my home course which he had never stepped foot on. should have been lower, but wasn't putting very well.

several years ago I drew a one armed golfer in the club championship. I didn't win. It was really hard to get the game face on against a handicapped opponent but he won fair and square.

Great topic.

When I lived in Texas I was fortunate enough to play with "Ray" an 80+ year old guy who played in the low 80s consistently. Before coming home to work oil, he flew bombers in WWII and flew more missions than was required of him. He's tuff, humble, a good golfer and better man.

More than competition or sport, meeting guys like Ray is why I play golf.

There's was the one guy (Keith) last year that acted as a commentator for himself during the entire round. "great shot Keith" "okay Keith, here's what you are going to do on this tee shot, tee it up high and try to hit a little draw.....bang!! oh yeah Keith you're the man, you did it!! Holy shit you are killing the ball today!!" LOL (it got annoying though)

I recently playe with a guy, a left hander, who put the ball a full 6 inches on the target side of his front foot at address. I am talking at least 6 inches. Could have been a little more.

I played a military match play tournament against a guy who had one leg. He had lost his other one in a motorcycle accident. We were tied through nine and then I pulled ahead. It was hot outside and I honestly believe he would have played better if his prosthetic hadn't started bothering him. He was sweating and had to stop a couple of times to adjust his leg. He was an awesome guy and I was glad I had the chance to play against him.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I haven't played golf with him, but the most unique golfer I have ever met has to be the guy that runs the driving range near my parents house. I have been there about a dozen times now, and every single time he is drunk. Friday at 1 pm? Drunk. Sunday at 3:30pm? Drunk. And my all time favorite..... Wednesday at 9:45 am..... Drunk.
That takes a special kind of dedication.
