The only good football broadcasters I know are Jeff Joniak and Tom Thayer. They do Bears radio.

I have yet to hear a national TV broadcaster who is worth listening to.

Why.

1st, H.L Mencken said, "Nobody ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public."

2nd, at one time Kornheiser was actually a columnist at the Washington Post, with columns in the Style section as well as the Sports section. To his credit, he didn't try to analyze technical aspects of sports and generally his columns had a lot of humor and insight in them and they were readable and enjoyable. IMO, with his transition to radio & TV he has become the Village Fool. Of course, he's making money faster than the Bureau of Engraving & Printing can print it.

I don't mind him that much. He has some funny lines here and there...what irks you about him most?

Everything in between the occasional "here and there".

I've just never heard him say anything worthwhile and I think he interferes with the flow of the action. Even if I didn't mind his shtick, he doesn't know when to shut up. That's why I like Troy Aikman as an analyst. Aside from his dead-on analysis, he knows that the audience is there to watch the game, not listen to him. He knows how to say his blurb and then be quiet.

I see - I guess I was thinking more along the lines of you preferring Madden as the MNF commentator over Kornheiser...but as a commentator in general - I agree with you.

Kornheiser fan here.... Wilbon also.... I think he's the "color" guy. I like him better than Dennis Miller, eventhough I like Millers comedy and political humor.

Kornheiser = unwatchable

Miller = unwatchable When did (attempted) humor become critical to watching a football game?

Remember when Lethal Weapon came out? At that time, there were only 2 movie franchises (Lethal Weapon and 007) that used occasional humor to temper the violence. Soon after, and for the next 20 years, action movies progressively inserted more and more "humor" until it overwhelmed the movie and basically ruined it. All the little "funny" comments that no one would ever say, etc.

Same thing with major sports broadcasts. The sports have been overwhelmed by the broadcaster sideshow. MNF (and SNF) are the most prominent examples. The latest Bond movie, Casino Royale, dispensed with all the idiotic humor. Best bond movie in . . . well, maybe ever. Saved the franchise. I hope they do the same with major sports broadcasts.

Sadly, in his last several years of broadcasting, Pat Summerall sounded like he was perpetually drunk on the air. Not just slurring, but also what he was saying.

Al Michaels is okay, and Madden seems to have toned it down a lot this year. They are tolerable I suppose. Buck and Aikman are the best right now. (Although, since his father passed, Buck tends to get a little arrogant every now and then.)

I can't stand Michaels, but I think that's more a personal thing. I like Aikman a lot. I also think Simms does a good job. After that, it's slim pickings.

Ugh, I can't stand Joe Buck honestly. Esp when he does baseball. He only has a few monotonous lines just said at a higher decibel level. "To the right siiiiide...THROUGH - BASEHIT!...Up the middlllle...THROUGH - BASEHIT!" I know this thread is about football, but I just can't stand Joe Buck.

You must like my second favorite sports talk show: PTI

(It's second only to Around the Horn) I like Kornheiser. He realizes that sports are what they are and laughs at them unashamedly. Kornheiser throws himself under the bus more often than he throws anyone else under it. I don't know of any grievous factual errors he's made. If you don't get his jokes, try getting off on Mike Tirico's raucous sense of humor. MNF is not what it once was - the best damn sports show period. I'm with the Gifford, Dandy Don and Howard fans on that one. MNF will never be what it once was because of cable TV. If that means you use Kornheiser to broaden the potential appeal, I'm OK with that.

Best, Mike Elzey

Just re-read my post. I meant to say Kornheiser is the color guy.

I guess I am just a Tony fan. Must be all of the Uranus jokes .

The only thing John Madden could acutely analyze is the most efficient method for dismantling and devouring a 23 lb turducken.

    • However, have you ever considered using small summer houses for such setups? They offer a great solution for creating dedicated practice areas, especially for an affluent audience looking to enhance their outdoor living space.
    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
