It's obvious right now that the Yankees are trying to "buy" a World Series ring. They already had the 3 highest salaries in all of baseball (Sabathia, Jeter, A-Rod) and now they just had to take Mark Texeira away from the Red Sox. Both Stinebrenner's (SP?) absolutely piss me off.

I hope the Yankees saw the Ray's last year. One of, if not the lowest salaries in all of baseball, and here they are in the World Series, while the Yankees with their huge salaries, didn't play a postseason game.

Big deal. The Yankees were absolutely terrible last year, and were plagued by injuries. Money can't buy a lot of things, and a World Series Championship is certainly one. Good for the Rays though. They took away the playoffs from the Yankees and stopped the Red Sox...looks like everybody needs to learn from them. One thing is for sure though, I will root for my team, and you will root for yours...part of the glory in being a sports fan is loving your team even when they are down...Go Knicks!

Remember, the Yankees payroll will actually be less than it was last year.

The whining I hear out of Boston is their typical inferiority complex - let's be honest - Boston has always been a second rate city (and that is being generous). Knowing the sox ownership, there will be a smear campaign against Texiera making themselves look good for not signing him.

I love the signing of Texiera for the simple fact that I should no longer have to worry about manram being a Yankee.

The Yankees are opening a new stadium in which some tickets can cost upwards of 2500 bucks. They have too improve the product they sell so they can virtually guarantee a sellout for every game and all the luxury boxes. And do not forget because they have a new stadium this comming year they will pay no Luxury tax and that is why all these other owners are crying about no free lunch next year. The yank payroll will be less than last years and after this season we should drop another 40 million as Damon and Matsui and nady all come off the payroll so lokk out next off season.

Personally, I like what the Yankees are doing. I'm not a Yank fan at all, but if they can spend that much then why not? The rules of baseball unfortunately allow it so why not take advantage? A huge part of sports is using the rules to your advantage. Because they can afford it, they would be stupid not to do this. It's not their fault.

With that said, I think this just goes to show how unfair Major League Baseball has become from a salary perspective. New York (Yanks and Mets), Boston, Los Angeles, Detroit and Anaheim (and I'm sure I'm forgetting a few teams) are all able and willing to spend $100+ million dollars to compete when teams such as Cincinnati, Pittsburg, KC, Florida, TB, among others either can not afford to spend this kind of money or won't. Football, Basketball and Hockey all have a salary cap and it works fine and, to some degree, creates a level playing field for the entire league. A team should not be allowed to spend only $25 million and a team should not be allowed to spend $150 million. There needs to be a minimum and maximum salary cap. Even if it's a broad range - something like minimum of $75 million and maximum of $125 (I'm just throwing out numbers).

Of course, there are those who say it doesn't matter since the Yankees now become a team that will generate interest again in baseball, either because you love them or, more likely, because you hate them. And while the $200+ million may help them win AL East (although many baseball experts are still only calling them the 2-3 best team in AL East anyway), they still have to win 11 additional games to win world series and history says this is a bigger challenge anyway as the highest payroll wins less than half the time (I think it was Peter Gammons who said that on radio the other day).

The league needs a cap, it ensures that all teams have the possibility of being competitive and makes GMs spend their money more wisely. Plus i hate that the Red Sox, Yankees, and Angles basically use teams like KC and Pitssburg as farm teams.

English premier league soccer sounds pretty similiar. Teams like arsenal, Liverpool, Man U and Chelsea seem to buy all the best players while the others are basically playing for 5th. In AFL football there is a salary cap so the richest teams can't buy players and it hopefully makes the competition more level. But if it is within the rules, then the Yankees have every right to do what they want.

I dont agree with your minimum, why should you pay them more, if they will take less? Your gonna take out like 5 teams out of the league who wont be able to afford your minimum, they're gonna wanna pay as much as they can, so they can get the top players. I really think your minimum is dumb though, thats like saying I can get the job done for 10 bucks, but I'm gonna give you thirty just because! Those teams that spend 40 million are spending all they can. Heck if i got paid 1 million and got all the fame pro baseball players do, I would be psyched.

If you didn't notice, the Yankees couldn't even buy a playoff spot with their $230 million payroll, let alone win a World Serious, which is absolutely hilarious. They're just going to choke again

The league does not need a cap. Teams need to hire better talent evaluators.

All of these weak sisters have no problem taking the Yankees revenue sharing cash - they just have no idea how to spend it. Some hold onto it, while others sign stiffs to $10 million/year deals. The last Yankees dynasty was built on home grown talent (Jeter, Williams, Posada, Pettite, Rivera) with the remaining pieces (Brosius, Cone, O'neill) filled with trades or free agency. Every other major league team could have afforded to sign one of the free agents the Yankees signed this off season. Maybe it is time to contract a couple of teams - the smaller markets either do not support their teams enough or inept management has left them at their current level......

The number I put in my post for minimum was just a number. The minimum is so that a team like Florida or Kansas City (just examples - don't anyone take it personal) doesn't just try to tank the season just to save money. The NFL and NBA both have minimum salary cap (as well as max). It just helps ensure competitive balance. I agree with the idea that they shouldn't pay someone more than they are willing to take. That wouldn't make much sense. But for fans the minimum will just go to show that your team is at least 'trying' to be somewhat competitive. Of course, baseball is a little different than other leagues because of the minor leagues and you can have a team (like Tampa this past season) who has a lower salary but is still very competitive because the players are simply making less money.

As for your point about the teams only spending a minimum now (you mention $40 million), if they can not afford to be competitive, then perhaps the owners need to assess the situation and do what needs to be done. If that means selling or taking on additional partners, then that's what they need to do. Most likely if they would put a competitive team on the field their revenue would increase. In most markets, if the team is not winning or at least competitive fans will not turn out regularly and thus revenue is adversly affected in a major way. I live in Cincinnati and we have definitely seen a problem with ownership a couple years back not be 'willing' to spend more money (and that owner was a billionaire). The team was sold and new ownership recognizes increases in payroll are necessary to become competitive again (although, money obviously doesn't fix everything). That's not to say they will be spending $200 million, but they will be closer to the league average than they previously have been. I don't know what the minimum should be, but I do think there needs to be one. Baseball owners owe it to the fans to try to be competitive, just as baseball and basketball do (I don't follow hockey, so I don't know much about it's cap). It can be argued that a minimum is less important and it would be if the owners could be relied on to do what is necessary to be competitive. If they could put a roster of 25 rookies making minimum salaries, and that team can compete with the Yankees and Red Sox, then more power to them. Here is the link to the 2008 team salaries: http://baseball.about.com/od/newsrum...amsalaries.htm The majority of the top half teams were all at least in contention for playoff spots (except Mariners and Tigers) after the All Star Break. The majority of the teams in second half of list were not competitive (of course, the Rays and Twins are exceptions). Not to beat a dead horse (honestly, I don't really care that much about the issue), but teams like Florida would rather let a player go to another team or trade the player that is due a big payday than have to spend money to keep him. When some of the young players for the Rays reach point of free agency (or arbitration), the team is going to have to decide if keeping team salary low is more important that keeping a good team together. Maybe a hard minimum is a shaky idea because of minor league players or career years from players with low salaries, but there needs to be a way that the fans of a team during spring training to feel that their team is trying to be competitive. I respect and understand your position and don't think your necessarily wrong. As a baseball fan, I just each team to let their fans keep hope alive.

Yeah, Yankees are buying a WS because the RedSox never have, right?

I forgot how the Sox spent $43 million dollars just to negotiate to Dice K. As for the Yanks move, it's pure economic brilliance. They had $88 million coming off the payroll . That brought down payroll from $204 million to $116 million. Three teams had higher payrolls heading into this offseason: Mets, RedSox and Tigers. The Yanks signing this trio of players puts their payroll at $168 million, $40 million less than last year while making them significantly better. I say that's pretty good economic value, no? As for Tex, blame John Henry. Had Manny not gone berserko, they would have been on the hook for his money. Tex would have represented a $2mm increase. The Sox can't afford a $2mm annual increase? Please. They print money. They have their own network, a billionaire owner, a fan base that spends money and the highest ticket prices in baseball. The Angels, in their infinite wisdom, decide that Tex, who is light years better than Torri Hunter, deserves the same salary: $20mm a year. There is no GM alive other than Bill Stoneman who believes that Torri is worth $20mm a year. There is no GM who would trade Tex for Torri, straight up. Again, though, this is a team that is paying Gary Matthews Jr and Hunter $31 million, combined, annually. In short, can't blame the Yanks. They signed the three best FA's, saved $40 million in payroll, decreased the amount of revenue sharing and tax obligation and are moving into a new ballpark that allows them to print money. It's simply great economics for them.

What I'm saying is most of the bottom teams are still competitive, but I'm sure they're spending all they can. Wouldn't you? Or wouldn't you spend at least what you thought was wise?

The Yankees have always tried to buy a World Series ring. It's what they have done since George S. bought the team. It won't stop as long as the Steinbrenner's control the team. The Yankees have a legacy and their fans expect to win the WS every year. To do that, the Yankees try and sign the best (and, consequently, the most expensive) players.

That is grossly insane amounts of money. In these days and times I wish people would spend their money better.

I don't want to get off topic, but I highly doubt what you know what you're talking about. You may, and if you do I appologize for being so presumptuous.

What is happening now is either a shift of the aggregate supply curve or the aggregate demand curve. That just means that unemployment goes up. (There are other factors, but they don't matter for the purpose of this discussion.) To decrease unemployment, spending (by the government, the Yankess, consumers, etc.) should occur. It an economic theory popularized during FDR's presidency...Thank you John Maynard Keynes. If the Yankees spend it on a ball player, it's better than not spending the money. If they gave it to the government and they spent it, it would have a better effect, but we know that will never happen. Spending=good in most cases today...even if it is too much money a ball player.
