The Scenario: Casual round at your local muni w/ 3 other walk-on singles. At no particular hole, your foursome is dancing. You squat behind your marker to read your line while your partner lags his/her 25 footer nicely inside the leather. It's good but they tap in anyway for par. While doing so they accidentally step in your intended putting line. As they retrieve their ball from the hole and clear the way they notice their wrong doing and apologize for doing so.

The Point: Accident or not, is it such a BAD thing if anyone from YOUR group steps in your line??? If you really think about it, the group(s) in front of yours probably stepped all over your line anyway. Right ?!?!?

True, I think it was more of a problem in the days of spikes. I still think it's disrespectful to step on someone's line...

well, it depends. where i live, in the winter the greens get really really really soft. so wherever you step leaves a pretty decent footprint for awhile until it pops back in shape. so, if your 180 pound buddy steps on your line, it kinda sucks.

these guys joined up in our group one day, and they SUCKED, like i think they must have went thru 2 dozen balls in the trees

but anyway we were on the green and i put my ball in and in the mean time walked across his line not knowing and he got mad and was like yelling haha

me being the A$$ i am, said listen dude its not gonna matter, thats like you saying watch me hit one in the fairway for once in my life,

then i pulled out a 50$ bill out of my wallet for a roughly 5 foot putt i said put your ball here, no one stepped in the putting line, if you make it, its yours

of course he missed it, went past the whole about 10 feet i just laughed and played thru them

just kinda pissed me off when he yelled at me like he was mad, there was no joking to it at all

if he was joking i woulda just been like o sorry its cool

i probably shouldnt have been an a$$ but whatever =]

but to add to my reply here i think whether you get mad or not depends on skill level lol

if you KNOW you can make it, like if youre a pro level, yes its wrong

but if the person is like those guys i described above, that you know there wasnt a chance in hell of them making the putt and they swing clubs like my mom does, then nah, just have fun and try not to take it to incredibly serious

Unless someone walks in my path with the intent of upsetting me, it doesn't upset me. Odd how intent matters, but it does.

That's the way I look at it. And I have never seen anybody do it intentially.

I agree that if it's not intentional, then it's no big deal , however if it's on purpose then I have an issue.

I like the $50 dollar comment...
Its funny because we do that in our group when someone is up for a birdie putt or eagle putt, we all would put money in the cup and if he sinks he can take it, LOL it was always a way to mess with their putt... but it is all in fun and always no harm intended.

but stepping on someone else's line and not mean it, it is kewl, (if it is just a game for fun)
but if there is money involved and in a tournament, I hope they have better manners...

and like the comment above, if someone steps on my line and I worry about it, it is time for me to go out on those Monday qulifers in the PGA or Nationwide tour...

Agreed that it probably wouldn't make any difference 99% of the time, but it is a matter of etiquette and someone who is unaware should be politely informed.

I am nuetral on this topic, since it depends on what you are shooting so far or the nature of your golf outing. The slightest thing can deter a putt. I am not upset with what a footprint will do to the grass, as it will bounce back up, but sometime shoes will leave tiny rocks or dirt behind, and that will definently affect the path of putt, especially with the greens as tight and fast as they are around me. It shouldnt piss anyone off, just tap your putter around it even it out, and rake the dirt out of your line.

When you play late in the day after 200+ people have trampled the greens before you, it does seem silly and probably has no effect on your putt. It is however a courtesy to not step in someone's line. This can be taken too far also. A player I know once played a US Open Qualifier with Mac O'Grady, and Mac yelled at him for stepping on Mac's though line, 4 feet on the opposite side of the hole! Gimme a break.

It happens all the time by accident, no big deal. As a common courtesy you don't want to step in someone's line, just like you don't want to mark your ball with a Susan B Anthony dollar or some other huge coin, and just like you don't throw shadows when someone is hitting, or walk ahead of someone's ball. When things like this are done, it's either gamesmanship or ignorance.

I remember occasions where on greens with a lot of break and everyone dancing, it's crazy trying to avoid stepping on lines to the point of becoming comical. Of course I do try, but it's funny trying to 'read' a fellow player's breaking putt and avoid their line. Sometimes requires a wide berth.

Last season, i hit a perfect 8 iron off the tee and left my ball about 5' from the hole for birdie. WHat ended up being my ONLY birdie of the season. Out of the four of us, 3 were on off the tee, the fourth a chip off. Being that I was the closet I let everybody else put in, the one person who wasn't in our group putted in two and saved par, when he went to pick up his ball, he stepped in my line and twisted his shoe in such a way that he left a big mark right in front of the cup. Mind you this was the ONLY birdie i got last year, so it was an important putt to me. I tapped it down and didn't say anything, and made my putt, but still it was quite upsetting.

... As a common courtesy you don't want to step in someone's line, just like you don't want to mark your ball with a Susan B Anthony dollar or some other huge coin...

Actually, a SBA dollar is the same size as a quarter

I think it's a courtesy not to step on someone's line. The greens are so hard where I play that it's rarely an issue. If someone is doing it deliberatley to gain some kind of perceived advantage I'd react, and it wouldn't be pretty....
