Ok so i was at the range today and i dont know if it was a one off thing but i started to fade the ball a bit right (not a bad fade but a bit noticable) like 1-2 yards fading right of target

the reason this is troubling to me is a normally play a nice reliable draw. I even tried a few drills to stop it and nothing worked. then i closed the club face a bit and it just went farther left but faded a bit at the end.

tried playing it back a bit in my stance but it just created a lower shot with more spin (as it should)

help?

P.s. tycobb thought i was talking about my draw driver, ahahha

thats my bad i didnt specify this was happening with clubs: 5 iron, 4 iron, 3 iron

im not sure if i was just really stiff because it was 0* celcius at the range or if my body was just telling me to go die because it hates mats either :P

You probably can never hit a fade because your driver is at least 1 degree closed.

its a 1-3 yard fade, and generally i dont fade the ball thats why its troubling, also when the ball fades you lose distance on your irons...and i dont want that

Hello Ian.

First off...a 1-3 yard fade isn't going to cost you any distance.

There are only 2 things that cause the ball to move. One is swing path, and the other is face angle at impact.

One of my favorite keys is to tell folks to "hit the inside corner" of the golf ball. You mentioned that it was cold....did you have on a lot of clothing that was binding or restrictive? Were you finishing your backswing? Both of these things are common for colder weather. You have to finish the backswing in order to get the club inside on the approach to the ball.

My fix would be to make sure your backswing is complete, relax your grip, aim a little at the inside corner of the ball, and then just swing away.

Higgy

i wouldn't worry about it, if its a tiny fade, it shouldn't bother your game too much. I would just keep preacticing and your old game will come back. Winter is long and everyone is rusty when coming back.

Ian,

I had same issue where nearly all of my shots had a baby fade in the apex of my ball flight. I wasn't terribly worried about it because it was actually quite easy to control. The way I see it, as long as you are hitting flush shots and your shots are manageable for the your next, then just play it as is. Golf is a game of misses, if you're "miss" is 1-3 yards right of the target then you're in a better position than most. Hope it works out for you!

If it was only one practice session I would put it down to "one of those days". Had a similar problem not so long ago (but more than a single session) and fixed it quite nicely by making a slightly more one-piece take-away and making sure I made a good shoulder turn.

id say it was probably grip pressure and the way you were releasing the club.

IT COULD be a set up problem but for that little of a fade id bet on release. You are probably just late, maybe it was one of those days like others have said. Im currently having the same problem and its irritating ;[

Truthfully, there's nothing wrong with playing a fade. My natural shot shape is a draw and I'm making transitions into fades for the accuracy benefits and my misses are better and more isolated. You were probably taking the swing path of your hands straight back instead of around your body. When you circle around your torso more with the clubhead, you get a draw. When the clubhead comes back a little closer to vertical, more above your shoulders instead of below, that's when you get a fade. You might also be gripping to firmly which restricts the fluidity of your wrists. That's another reason I started to move to fades. I tend to want to hold that club hard so it allows for a bit of that.

And to reply to tycobb about his thoughts on a draw driver, I learned how to fade it. it actually makes it really controlled. I've been ending up with these slight pulls which turn over and fade at the end and drop ontop of the target. Pretty cool looking shot.

Fade is a good shot to have in the bag. It's plenty accurate and I'd say if you can figure out how to keep hitting it, you'll be better for it. The draw is great to go low and cut the wind or roll up but if you want your shots to stick, let it turn right and high. very useful for those 3-5 irons.

Hello Ian.

That's some good advice! I've heard before that people will tend to block or push more when wearing more layers of clothes. So, it makes sense that could cause a fade too.

Nice post, Higgy GAC

That resonates. If I hit a couple fat on a hard mat, my body certainly voices its great displeasure and lack of swing cooperation seems to follow.

now it might sound a bit silly but when I find my balls going to the right, I just open the club face more on the backswing. What that does for me is it makes me more conscious of the face being open and so I then close it more than normal on the downswing. This should provide you with a draw. Hope this helps!

Harvey once said, (and I'm paraphrasing):

If you play poorly once, forget it.

If you play poorly the next time out, review your fundamentals of stance, grip and swing path.

If you play poorly a third time, go seek the help of a professional.

I think this can probably be applied to practice sessions too.

By the way, if you figure out what caused it, let me know. I miss my 1-3 yard fade (and my 8 handicap).

Harvey once said, (and I'm paraphrasing):

Great advice.

The greatest players hook or fade the ball a little in their natural swing. Jack Nicklaus said it is a "miracle" if a golfer hits the ball "perfectly" straight.

    • Both @DaveP043 and I play in our interclub matches every year, and have been team Captains as well.  There are always a few courses, mine is one, that win a lot of matches (we've won twice in the last 7 years), and we've been labeled as sandbaggers.  However, I really think that our course was rated too low (our greens just never seemed to get factored in enough), and thus our Handicaps were always a stroke or maybe 2 above, what they would've been if the course was rated higher.  And then when we went and played other courses, their slope and rating were much higher than ours, and sometimes I would get a 2 or 3 stroke bump on top of that.  It was definitely an advantage.  However, this past year, our course was rated again and the slope has gone up, so we'll see if we continue to have the same benefit.  Season starts this Sunday for us.
