Just a rant from me and how my day went today. Well I started my new job last week at Lake jovita in dade city, so I get to work today and notice theres some tourney going on and a practice round from college players. The four ball tourney didnt catch my eye but when I was out on the driving range watching about 150 college players from all over the united states practice from 1-530pm I cant say I seen a bad swing, fat or thin shot, or anything that wasnt ment to be done, not to mention just hearing the balls fly over my head on a 315yrd range and guys are rolling them to the back into the wind!!! was just extacy, like being in the middle of a battlefield. What this rant is about is the fact that there is more talent than you guys think out in the world. Everytime I start to believe that golf is panning out or getting to the point that you cant get much better I get a big slap in the face, and today was nothing but inspiration to me. Theres a major college tournament going on at the course I work at and Ill deff keep you guys updated on the scores, not to mention this isnt just an average course, it hosts the second stage Qschool every year around late October and stretches out to above 7200 yrds. What a weekend this is going to be seeing so much talent and so many different techniques to swing the golf club.... man I love my job haha

I agree - golf is less about talent than it is about opportunity. Sure, guys like Tiger are once in a millenium and some guys like Phil just have a special knack around the green, but you'd be surprised how many guys there are on the Tour who have gotten it done through hitting ball after ball after ball.

To keep my inspiration on top i agree with chriskzoo. Players going to golf school is bound to be miles ahead of most players. They work on golf every day and got skilled teachers aiding them through it all. I expect those players to be great golfers.

Ok I can see where you guys are going with this, and again this is just my opinion, from being around sports since I was a little kid and basically being in the lime light myself at a young age ya you do have to be dedicated to "your" sport but dont let that statement takeaway from anybody giving you the compliment of saying "your talented".

I don't agree with that assumption either. Basically, they're saying that anyone could be on that level if they had access to hitting balls and the right instruction.

I played College golf, and I can guarantee you that there are a lot of good players out there. But there are different levels. You might be a stud in high school and win a lot of tournaments. Then you go to the next level, and all of a sudden you're just another good player.

You can make it to a certain level on hard work & effort, but you can't replace natural talent. Some people have more than others.

You are absolutely right and I can't understand some of the responses you have received.

Of course they've been coached, of course they work hard, of course they have been groomed. One of the things I love about golf is that you can't buy a golf game. Hard work is great, but without it, talent is wasted. A lack of natural talent can be overcome by a very few players with a great work ethic. I totally endorse what you say about good players being impressive. This is why I get such a laugh reading posts by occasional 70s shooters thinking that they can turn pro. They don't read the scores in tournaments where guys shoot 5 under and miss cuts.

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

Of course they are good, they are probably fit for playing golf. You gotta be interested in golf to go to Q. Some learn the game much faster than others, but with the right instructions I think most people that have a wish to be a good golfer can become reasonably good. It's when you reach scratch and dream of playing on tour the differences can emerge. On that level you also need a mental strength and really wanting to be the best if you want to compete at a higher level.

My point is that a guy like Tiger is where he is today ofcourse because of his will and determination, but his father played a very important role in making him one of the best golf players ever. He could probably have become good without his teaching and inspiration, but I doubt he'd be as good as he is today.

If you want something bad enough and really want to go for it, I'd say most people can be a great golfplayer. There are very few physical limitations, you can be tall, short, thin or thick and still be an excellent player.

Let me first say to KWsipp I envy you for your job.Lake Jovita has 2 great courses. The Mrs and I played 36 there a few weeks back like the first 2 weeks of Feb.The greens on the old course were the best I have played in a LONG TIME.As for the college kids I wonder how many were from ST Leo's?It is a golf oriented college and it has a good working arangement with Jovita. You also have several LPGA and PGA players that live there so that must tell you somthing. The PGA players Tim petrovic on #10 is a castle. The people there are real nice and they know there golf.We also played with a couple from Germany whose daughter goes to ST Leo's for golf. These people told us not only thier daughter but many of her classmates were graduates of the leadbetter academy which has a affiliation with the school in some way{could not catch the broken english to well}but figured out most of school is golfers.Ouside of World Woods Jovita is our favorite place to play in Florida.

I about to leave to work open to close today and so far I couldnt catch all the scores but I did see a few 67's and probably missed some lower rounds, this being setup at 7000yrds they still have another 200 to stretch out lol. To flap ...yes this is the best 2 courses Ive played but honestly the community is the best part, for being "upscale" you couldnt ask for nicer members.

ding ding ding, we have a winner! This statement is 100% true. Once you get to college, you have to prepare to battle week in and week out with your teammates just to play in tournaments. They are going to be just as good, if not better than you.

I hate to be rude but honestly I cant believe Im getting negative replys by guys/girls that have handicaps higher than my grandmothers age I mean cmon I was just ranting about the fact that TODAY there is more(quantity) talent than there was 10 years ago. Define "talent" as you will but I can bet most of you people with the negative comments havent even seen True talent before, I mean just because these guys arent on tv doesnt make them less talented than any one that is.... Im done speaking bye bye

I agree with you about the odd comments you are getting.

As far as I can see, all you were saying was that you saw a bunch of good players practicing and it opens your eyes. Trust me - a lot of the negatives come from players who have never actually seen a proficient ball striker in the flesh.

Oh I can tell, honestly I play with great ball strikers, my dad and about 8 of his friends at bridgewater in lakeland, and this weekend has brought new light to how good you can make contact.

I wasn't there, but to play college golf you have to have talent, ESPECIALLY with golf academies starting at age -3. Regardless if you have been trained by Leadbetter, or you hit into a barn on your farm, to play at that high of a level you need talent. To get your swing looking like Iron Byron takes practice. And what about putting?!

    • I’m not sure I agree. It’s just what the majority find more entertaining. Most people prefer women’s gymnastics over men in the Olympics. How much hype is there with the men’s compared to the women’s? I bet you can rattle off several big names in women’s gymnastics and only a handful of men. Women’s tennis …same thing. And sure enough, their purses are the same. However, WNBA, awful…LPGA, not near as much interest than PGA. Don’t think it’s really that complicated IMO.

    • If you walk up to a food/drink kiosk at Magic Kingdom and ask the person for a cup of "magic water" they will give you a small cup of Sprite for free. About 3 fingers worth. They don't sell alcohol at MK anymore so I go over to one of the courses while she hangs out there.
    • This isn't some kind of natural fact. It's a lot more complicated than this implies.
