Does anyone have any tips to improve ball striking. With my irons lately i have been catching it out towards the toe. I am going to get my lie angle adjusted to fix this, but i want some other drills to help me improve on my weakness.

Believe it not, but I have found that when I am searching for my golf swing if I practice my pitch shots with 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 swings at short distances that it helps me concentrate on making solid contact and making a compact swing with my irons. Once you are successful with the pitch shots you can test your swing with short, mid and long irons.

The pitch shots focuses on the impact zone or hitting area.

My club fitting guy, told me to develop any swing changes, or to work out any problems well before getting my clubs fit.

Thank you for tips! I'm really struggling with this too. The 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 swings make sense, I've also been trying to concentrate on going through the swing, and on trying to ignore that fact that the ball is even in the way.

(p.s. The video, If I was hitting from that guys mat, I betcha he'd move that flat screen off of the wall, lol.)

Learn the 8 ball flight laws and then you can always fix your swing.

Golf is a game in which the ball always lies poorly and the player always lies well.

Try this. take your six iron. Put the ball back in your stance inside big toe back foot, and hit punch shots full speed. Do not watch the ball fly. Keep your head down. Do this for half a bucket. You will start Puring the ball. Second half of the bucket keep head down for a count of 3 then watch the ball fly. with the last few balls in the bucket take normal full swings from normal ball position. You will strike the ball as solid and stay with your swing better than you ever have.

One of the tips in the Golf Digest Hot List 2009 issue said to take two tees about 4 inches apart. Place a ball between them and swing while staying between the tees. Combine this with the 1/4, 1/2. and 3/4 swings....I imagine things will groove very well.

I've been doing this at the range and my ball striking has definitely improved.

I am glad to hear that! I am going to start working with my irons with this drill. I have somehow lost the magic touch with my irons....

I couldn't agree more. I hit most of my iron shots off the toe (don't know why

) but when I go back to a wedge and make shorter swings, I hit it flush every time.

My biggest problem concering ball striking is pre-release and trying to hit the ball. I've experimented some with a lag stick and moving my focus ahead of the ball. The ball striking improved incredibly. It went from hitting the ball pretty hard to barely noticing the ball was there. I haven't been able to make it consistent yet, but it's definately something that give me loads of extra distance. The feeling of hitting the ball is like it's a lump of butter.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I went out to practice the short game this morning and focus on my set up and was able to make solid consistent contact with short chips. I then started to use the same set up for 50 yard pitch shots and was very happy with the results.

In summary if you are having trouble with making solid flush contact if you practice chipping and once you make solid consistent flush contact move to longer distances with pitching, to full wedge irons and move your way up your mid and longer irons, fairway and finally driver. What you will get out of this method is the practice is your take away or backswing you need to help set up for solid consistent flush contact with your golf swing.

Good advice. I use this all the time. Another thing I do when i start hitting it crappy (especially 3 and 4 iron) is just take 3/4 swings at about 80 percent swing speed. Good ball striking is good tempo in my opinion, and when you slow things down it helps to get the motion back of swinging smooth and staying with the shot.

This is me too. I wll be working on these tips.

I couldn't agree more. I hit most of my iron shots off the toe (don't know why

I was doing the same thing then realized I was reaching for the ball at setup. So I basically moved a tad closer to the ball and I was good to go. Your issue might not be that simple.
