I know you are supposed to post everything, but this doesn't make sense because the course you are playing is nothing like the course that was rated by the USGA.

I can only speak for myself, but if the course is in a condition to the degree where it has an adverse effect on play I card the round as practice.

Sure it is. And it's easier than a course that's playing really wet. Or a course on a really windy day.

I bet aerated greens don't affect scoring like you might think. The greens are slower and don't break as much. That probably offsets the slight "odd bounce" you might get from time to time. So yeah, you post them.

Aereted greens have no break in them. In some ways they're easier to putt. Just hit it at the hole and hope..lol.

Record them all

Yep aerated greens count as long as its in season, but "recording them all" isn't always true.

The OP is correct in that some regional agencies (ie: Chicago District Golf Association) abiding by USGA rules do not require the posting of scores if you play courses off season. The slope/rating is based on conditions when standard maintenance is occurring. If you play a course in Arizona during your regional offseason, you would be expected to post the score. Its based on course condition not game condition.

During aeration season, I make it a point to call courses to ask whether or not they've aerated before I play. If they have, I play somewhere else until the greens come back.

When I have gotten stuck on an aerated course, I have to admit it usually turns into a practice round (playing multiple balls and focusing on placing drives and iron shots), so I obviously don't record the score.

I was just looking at the USGA handicap rules and trying to determine the nature of practice rounds.

It seems that practice rounds are only really determined by your intent at the start of the round.

The only thing that I see that counters this is that it mentions if you play more than 13 holes an estimated 18-hole score should be posted.

On the other hand it states that rounds not played in accordance with the rules of golf should not be posted. (ie. taking a second practice shot, not putting out, so on and so forth)

Which leaves me back at it really is intent at the start of the round?

So if you find out that the greens have been aerated, you change your intent and practice in lieu of keeping score?

good post I give it a "10",,,on a different note...I disagree with the aerated greens not affecting putts, sure no break BUT. A damp or moist aerated green will turn the ball into a magnet for sand. No thanks, Its a practice round. nuff said.

I played on aerated greens today. It didn't affect the roll nearly as much as I thought it would. I didn't miss anything inside 5 feet and even rolled in a couple of 30 footers. Plus, it gave me a lot of options when lining up putts The aeration marks were actually quite uniform and rather small. About woman's-pinky width.

I won't do it cuz most the time your score will be higher due to aerated green.

Isn't this kind of negating the point of keeping a handicap? If you only post your lowest scores, won't your handicap not really reflect your playing potential? Or rather, won't it exaggerate it?

I'm not a big fan of playing on aerated greens (who is?), but I agree with iacas, and I think putting on aerated greens is a heck of a lot easier than playing the same course on the windiest day or playing in rain. It's not as though it's impossible to make putts on aerated greens.

Yes. Nothing in the Rules or the Handicap manual says not to, so I still turn in my card. I find that I don't score that much different anyway. It's all about adjusting your game to accommodate the slower pace.

I would have to say not all aerated greens are "playable" some ghetto courses will use good ole quarry beach sand, its does wonders for your putt! The better courses that use fine sand provide a better green surface.

I know one thing about this. I would much rather play on good greens that have been recently airrated than loosy greens that have been not. Chances are the good greens are soft, nice fairways, good bunkers.

You can not pick and choose what scores to post. That is reverse handicaping or anit-sandbagging and is not very smart if you are to play for money or competitively. Regardless, the revision only takes into account 10 out 20 so if it is a bad day, it doesn't matter.

    • Day 76 - Pretty sore today, so I opted for putting over my Stack session. Primary focus was on starting line, as my putting has been pretty poor this year.
    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
