So, apparantly I'm a sandbagger.

I've been called a lot of things in my life (and probably rightfully so), but never have I been called a sandbagger...until now.

This whole incident happened a while ago. I was playing golf with 3 of my friends and we got a match. I was playing to a 14 or 13 (now a 12), so I was getting like 8 or 9 shots (off a 5 hdcp). We all agreed to the number of shots we were getting, so the bet was on. I played well and shot a 43/40 for an 83. I played very well on the back with only a few mistakes. Then, I heard someone mutter "sandbagger". I defended myself saying I was playing well and cited my past few scores - both good and bad. And I really was playing to about a 14. So being a nice guy, I told my opponents that if they thought I sandbagged, I'd have no problem calling my end of the bet off and taking care of my partner (paying for his winnings if he didn't agree). They said that it's fine and everything and the one kid was joking about the sandbagging thing.

So now about a month later, a friend of mine tells me today that I'm supposedly a sandbagger. And I'm like, who'd you hear that from since I thought he was just messing with me. He tells me that two of the kids that I played (one of which won) with a month ago said something to him. If they think I'm sandbagging (which I have a huge issue with personally), they should talk to me. I offered to call off the bet that I was surely going to win. I even looked at the score card - two shots would make no difference in the match at all (if you win by 4 holes, 2 shots isn't that big of an issue). We were winning holes with bogies! And one kid saying this crap said before the round, "I'm listed as a 10, but I'll play to a 12." And they call me a sandbagger? And this is the part I really don't like: apparantly, I was even through 7 (I've never been even through 7 in my life) when they mentioned maybe I was sandbagging. Then, I doubled the next hole and bogied the one after that...on purpose...to raise my score. I played with 2 of the kids this week in a match and won $1 (off a junk and a tied match). There didn't seem to be any problems, just joking about the sandbagging.

Some of it is them joking with me and in all honesty, I was a pretty good 14/13 at that time. Now I'm playing to a 12 like I should be now, but a month ago, no way. Part of it is my fault since I don't have a legit handicap anymore due to laziness, but in my best (and others') estimation, I should play to a 12...maybe even an 11.

Isn't this like the second thread where your "friends" have talked shit about you?

Advice? Get new friends. I say this from experience: better to have four or five great friends than 10 or 20 "eh" friends. Sure, it's even better to have one or two of those four or five play golf, but that's not always possible, so if maintaining these guys as golf acquaintances is important, get over it. They may have been saying it to rile you up or so that they don't have to give you as many shots the next time they play you. That makes them losers. Realize that - and keep it to yourself - and just move on.

really? you don't talk a little crap w/ friends. I am always talking a little trash with friends, but we always KNOW when it's just "crap" and when someone is seriously calling someone out or something.

The solution would be to get an official handicap, then nobody can accuse you of making up a number higher than what you deserve because it's not a guess anymore.

even official handicaps can be easily manipulated.

I would have to agree with others who have said the solution is to surround yourself with people who are less of a pain in the ass, or just deal with it if it doesn't bother you much.

The handicap system was originally designed so that people with dissimilar handicaps could play a legit match on even ground. We all know that is false. People simply don't maintain accurate handicaps. Every player would be obligated to enter every round on every course they play, no mulligans, no "two off the first tee", no dropping near the OB instead of stroke and distance, no gimmies, etc.

So with that in mind, the low handicappers always stick together, the higher handicappers stick together, and everybody is happy. Once the scratch guy has to give anyone more than a handful of shots it gets contentious. I played a league match the other night and had to give my opponent 8 shots over 9 holes. I shot 3 under with no bogeys and only won the match 1 up.

LOL.......

You're not alone. Every golfer who's ever won after having been given strokes, whether deserved or not, has been called a sandbagger, if not to their face, then behind their back!

The only way to avoid it, is to play straight up and either kick their ass, or lose like a man!

Don't trash your score on purpose when it serves you to... in doing so you raise your handicap artifically and you become... a sandbagger.

If you're winning the bet, "F" them if they don't like it. They are just jealous that you are having a good day. But you really do need to make a decent effort to keep a correct (not neccesarily official) handicap if you want to play with others for money. Play the game as well as you can and with complete honesty.

Well...theres noting wrong with a little gamesmanship..lol. My pro used to tell me stories about playing older guys for loot when he was a jr player. Hes a small guy and doesnt look very imposing. He would just lie around press the bets untill the last few holes of a 9 or 18, then go batshit and drop 3 or 4 strait birdies to close. He told me doing that helped pay for his first car..lol.

When i randomly join up with men (i am 16) to speed things up in a round, i always seem to get my first drive long and straight. they ask me my handicap and i say 18, and they joke around, mentioning how well i hit my driver. Then they see my iron striking, which is below average and they understand a little better why my handicap is what it is and then...they see my short game... :(

I read it as they accused him of screwing up his score on purpose...not that he actually did it on purpose.

they are just sore. There is no reason a 12 can't shot a 83. That is a good score but not rediculous. If someone says there a 12 and shoots a 75, then I would wonder. I played in a match play tourney and I just waxed the guy. I shot a 78 and I was a 10 at the time. I know what he was thinking but I know what I do. I play by the rules to the best of my ability and post my scores. I am a 9.3 and shot a 88 yesterday. It goes both ways. :(

All the stuff you mention would tend to lower one's handicap, not raise it, such that those folks would be at an a disadvantage in a real hcp. match. Following the rules adds strokes in most cases.

Sandbagging is not a 10 handicap shooting 75. Sandbagging is when a 10 handicap shoots 66. My brother is about a 5 or 6. He has the potential to be a lot lower, but his short game is not very good. If he has a good day chipping and putting, he can shoot close to par. Some might think he sandbags, but if you were to play two or three rounds with him you will see that he can shoot 72 or 85 and the difference is pretty much the short game.

My swing thoughts:

- Negative thinking hurts more than negative swinging.
- I let my swing balance me.
- Full extension back and through to the target. - I swing under not around my body. - My club must not twist in my swing. - Keep a soft left knee

    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.
