Today I broke 100 for the first time with a 99. I hit my driver terribly, like i always do, and I had 42 putts (24 on front 9, 18 on back 9). I know my putting is going to get better this was my 10th round ever I just started last fall. I had several really good holes but I also had a 9, 8, and two 7s. Anyway, I absolutely love this game and felt really good about my iron play I just need more putting and driving practice. I should probably take a couple of lessons too. The best thing about breaking 100 today was knowing with some putting practice I should easily be able to take off several more strokes.

Wow... work on the putting... and perhaps the chipping, if that was a cause of bad putting. At this stage of the game, don't get too down on yourself for anything, especially if any 3-putts were for bogey (that is, from a GIR).

Also, want to tell us about the four holes over 6? If it's painful, you don't have to, but if you describe the hole and the shots you took, we might be able to suggest how to avoid big numbers in the future. And avoiding big numbers helps produce small ones

Edit: Whoops, where are my manners? Congratulations! That's a great accomplishment. I still remember my first time breaking 100.

The 9 I think I learned my lesson already, but it was a par 5 that was lined with trees on the right, which is where my drive went. I picked a gap that was pretty aggressive and hit a tree then my next shot I hit another tree because of the same aggressiveness, or at this point stupidity. Fourth shot was a terrible lie and I hit it fat and still amongst the trees. Fifth shot 8 iron punch straight left onto the fairway (finally made a good decision but, too late), sixth shot was a 70yd sand wedge onto the green and then the finale... a 3 putt. Wow! man I look dumb, but every shot I was thinking I can fix this. The others were driver and long iron problems getting to the green and then 3-putting, I never did worse than 3 putts, but I did a lot of 3 putting. I know when I get within about 130yds I am going to be on the green or very close so my problems are getting to that 130yd range and then obviously closing on the green.

Congrats! I hope to be making a similar post this year. I've shot under 50 on my 2 9-hole outings today, so I'm hoping to brake 100 early this year.

AWESOME, Rukus!

I'm also looking forward to doing this in 2009. I'm playing this Friday - will have a full report.

One thing about the lessons. You may end up getting a little worse before you get better. I've had 6 lessons so far this year, and the first two or three just made me worse, but those lessons were necessary steps for me to get my swing correct & get rid of some old bad habits. I'm now hitting it better than ever. The last round of golf I played was in early March, but I've hit more balls on the range betweeen then and now than I've probably played on courses in my entire life.

Congrats - now set your sights on the next - Breaking 90. Remember don't get down on yourself if your progress is not linear, there's a lot of ups & downs (pun intended)

    • I honestly believe if they play longer tees by 300-400 yards, closer to or over 7,000 yards, more rough, tougher greens, women's golf will become much more gripping.  BTW, if it weren't for Scottie killing it right now, men's golf isn't exactly compelling.
    • Day 542, April 26, 2024 A lesson no-show, no-called (he had the wrong time even though the last text was confirming the time… 😛), so I used 45 minutes or so of that time to get some good work in.
    • Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
    • Oh yea, now I remember reading about you on TMZ!
