How do you apply your handicap index to a new course to determine your course handicap? Is there a formula or something?

Look around the pro shop at the new course, there should be a conversion chart posted.

If you don't find one, ask.

Also what would you say to this:

"I'm currently a 17 handicapper, but I'm playing more to a 15"

Can this be verified?

If there is something riding on this (money, etc), I would say: "Let me see your USGA HCP card and let's get a course HCP from the clubhouse before we tee off."

Is there any reason to verify it? Seems like if they want to play to lower handicap, more power to them.

Yeah, if the guy is a 13 and really playing to an 11 and "having a good round".

You need to know the slope of the tees you are playing to convert your index into a course handicap.

The end of this publication has the conversion charts for just about every slope you will encounter. http://www.usga.org/playing/handicap...Ref_Manual.pdf As was mentioned courses should have conversion tables for each set of tees posted somewhere.

What I don't understand is, I went to a website that helps calculate your handicap index.

http://www.pgaprofessional.com/handi...ml#calculators

I've played 14 rounds this year and keep all my scorecards to track how I play. My play varies widely as on a good day I'm in the mid 80s and on a bad day I'm in the low to mid 90s. As a result, I always told people my handicap was about 18.

This site says that to calculate my handicap, if I have 14 scorecards, I am to take my best 6. Now one of the 6 happens to be a day when I was on fire and hit my first ever single digit round (shot an 81) As a result, my handicap index was a lot lower than what I would normally tell people and it ended up at 12.7. Now just to see, I also entered my last 10 rounds (not my best 10) and it came out at 15.4

I wouldn't feel comfortable telling people I am a 12.7 because somedays, I score as bad as 97. In fact, I wouldn't even feel comfortable telling people I hit a 15.4.

Should I have really taken my best 6 out of 14 to calculate my index? How is this legit for people like me who are inconsistent and have a wide range in scores?

Uncle Snoopy says to multiply your HCI by the slope of the course and then divide by 113 then round to the nearest whole number.

The tossing of the highest scores balances the number for adverse conditions (or the fact that your wife has been nagging at you to finish "the list" and you are in a rotten mood). The averaging of the remaining evens out the variation in your game. Is it perfect, no, but it is at least consistent.

Your handicap is not supposed to represent what you normally score, or what your average score is.

It's a representation of your potential playing ability. You shouldn't expect to "play to your handicap" every time out.

Don't be fooled by index numbers. I was an 8 a month ago and shot a 92. It is your potential. Look at what scores the pros shoot at times (the one's who miss the cut). They are +4 or +5 HC and shoot 78-79.

Every golfer has days when it is bad. The variance gets better the better you get. My goal is not to have a really low index but shoot around that all the time. I do want to be good but I don't want to be inconsistant with my scores and shoot a 75 then a 85. I will get killed because my index would be around a 5 but I would at times play like a 12.

Your handicap is not supposed to represent what you normally score, or what your average score is.

The average player is expected to play to his Course Handicap or better only about 25 percent of the time, average three strokes higher than his Course Handicap, and have a best score in 20 which is only two strokes better than his Course Handicap.

Thank for your inputs guys. That makes sense. I agree that my potential could be what the index is. Just the matter of consistency. I'll shoot a 5 or 6 in a 9 and blowup on the other half, etc.

When people ask what my handicap is, do they usually mean the index then or what I normally score on average?

When I ask I expect to hear the index.
