As of 8:48, nobody is under par . Toms is 5 over after 4, Leondard doubled #1, Verplank is 3 over after 3...

I know it's early, but it looks like even par is going to be a great (possibly leading) score today.

My guess is that someone will break par and that -2 will be winning.

Fairways and Greens.

Got us John Cook and a couple of "lesser knowns" at the top right now with -2. They showed an interesting statistic on the golf channel last night that since 2001, only the '03 Open at Olympia Fields has seen the winning score be lower than the leading score at the end of the first day. Go low on day 1 and hang on for dear life!

Oh, and down goes Hedblom, dropping a shot at the 5th to go to -1. My guess is the leader comes in with a (-3) 67 today, but I still see +2 or +3 winning it.

Why is Golf better than football?

We get FOUR super bowls every year and a bonus with the Ryder Cup every other year. Not only that ...THEY'RE FOUR DAYS LONG!

Bury me with a golf glove in my pocket - just in case!

Why is Golf better than football?

I get 6 Super Bowls with the inclusion of the four majors, The Players Championship, and either the Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup. It's beautiful!

As Dave said, it's definitely going to get ugly. I believe someone will finish at -3 today, but that may be stretching it. The afternoon play might get even tougher, who knows.. It's good to see Vijay at -1 and Furyk at Even. Those two may stick around for awhile.

Kind of ugly stats page for Furyk.. You'd never guess that this is a leader in the clubhouse at a US Open Course

FAIRWAYS HIT 8/14 57%
GREENS IN REGULATION 10/18 56%
PUTTS 27
PUTTS AVG 1.50

I'd think with this fairway and green accuracy one'd be out of it, due to heavy rough setup, having 1.50 putting avg. should never happen on a US Course

As of 8:48, nobody is

I think the staff mostly predicted 1 or 2 under would take it.

That is pretty wild, but it's not taking one factor into consideration which is grit!

Also, just as everyone gives up on Monty, he comes charging back into contention at a U.S. Open. Personally, I'd like to see him win it, but it's still very early. He is at -1 through 17 holes for the record. Damnit, I hate having to keep up at work instead of watching it on TV.

Montey under par!!

It appears that two players will finish, nope, as I was typing it David Howell managed to double-bogey 18 to fall from -2 to even. D'oh!

Monty is the only player to finish under par!!! And Tiger is seven strokes back. He hit three fairways, I believe, and had some 3-putts. 33 putts total. Ouch.

Perhaps Tiger is trying to miss the cut so that he does not have to wear THIS outfit on Saturday:

P.S. Thanks to BogeyLounge for the pointer.

Well tiger just finished at +11. I guess that will be it for him. Seems like he was ready to leave.

Unbelievable! This will be Tiger's first cut missed in a major since the 1996 U.S. Open, and he was an amateur then. Crazy crazy week.

By the way, I think Phil will shoot a 74 or 75 today and fall back a little as well. It's getting uglier than ugly.

I don't know if I'd call it Ugly??? Maybe its just that the PGA players have been spoiled with courses they can shoot way under. Maybe this is just a fair test of ability for Pro players?

Yeah You're right xian +12...nothing is going Tiger's way today.

Oh, I love it! It wouldn't bother me if the winning scores were around even par every weekend on the PGA Tour. I am a big fan of the courses as much if not more than I am of the players. I love to see a great layout put the whippin on the world's best, especially with all the new technology craze!

i'm going to go against the flow and say that Tiger either misses the cut or withdraws from the tournament...as much as i'd like to see him do well, golf isnt really a sport where u can "will" yourself to play well...and i think hes going to really really struggle

i hope this whole quoting thing works...but i just had to show off my amazing prediction abilities
