i always say the only thing i hate about golf is other golfers-not all of them, and certainly not the ones on here, but definitely the ones who play in a foursome and dont let a single thru!!

you mean you asked them nicely "hi guys mind if a play through" and they just said no? Was it stacked up in front of them? Did they have a reason?

You were in a cart?
You should've skipped hole 6, played 7-18, then 6.

I agree.

That's bad golf ettiquette to not let you play through. I was playing alone today, on the 2nd tee the foresome in front of me invited me to play through. I caught up to another foresome as they were about to tee off on the 4th tee. They also told me to go and play ahead of them. I eventually caught up again, this time to a threesome on the 8th tee, and they asked if I wanted to join or go ahead. I saw there was two more foresomes ahead, so I figured I might as well play with them...playing alone can get boring.

SOP for me if the group doesn't offer to allow me to play through (which is very rare).

This happens to me a lot more when I'm walking than any other time. People always say stuff like "oh we'll keep ahead of you, don't worry!". Then they usually hack up the course while I stand over my ball and glare at the back of their head for five minutes...rinse and repeat.

Earlier today I played one of the nicer courses in the area and caught up to a sixsome that told me that I couldn't go through them because I was a single and I had no standing on the course. Normally I'm not very confrontational but after watching a hundred practice swings and seeing those idiots pick up my ball for the second time I felt like giving one of them a colon cleansing with my spikes. I skipped ahead of them after calling the pro shop.

A bit more information would be helpful. Was the course open in front of them? If not then you had no right to expect to play through. Did you even ask them to let you through?

You were in a cart?

On a lot of courses this is not an option. Certainly not anyplace where I play regularly. If the course is reasonably busy, all this sort of thing will do is piss off someone else.

I really don't have a lot of sympathy for a single who comes on a forum and bitches about this sort of thing. If you play alone you are going to have to expect to be held up by larger groups. Sometimes that's going to result in a lot of waiting. Although I rarely play alone, when I do, I don't go with any expectations. If I get to play through a larger group, fine, but I don't expect it as my right. My foursome was once run over by 3 singles playing alone. About every other hole they came up on us and just thought it was their right to play through. But IMO, they were the inconsiderate ones by not joining up and playing together. We ended up have to wait 3 times while these jerks played through us, not because we were slow, but because they were too stuck up to join up and play together. Turned out that the starter had grouped them, but they decided that they didn't want to play together and split up. If that happened when I'm working as a starter they would play as I asked or they wouldn't be playing.

You play a course that allows sixsomes????? I've never even heard of such a thing. I guarantee you that I'd only play such a course one time. My home course allows fivesomes, but only under special conditions... they all have to be riding and they commit to keeping up. If they don keep up with the players in front, they are asked to pick up and move ahead. All of these conditions are explained before they tee off.

BTW, that group who said you had no standing on the course needs to get a newer rule book. The Rules of Golf did once say that a single has no standing on the course, but that language was removed in 2004. In the etiquette section in the 2000 edition of the Rules of Golf it said:
Priority on the Course In the absence of special rules, two-ball matches should have precedence over and be entitled to pass any three- or four-ball match, which should invite them through. A single player has no standing and should give way to a match of any kind. Any match playing a whole round is entitled to pass a match playing a shorter round.

Now it says:

Priority on the Course Unless otherwise determined by the committee, priority on the course is determined by a group's pace of play. Any group playing a whole round is entitled to pass a group playing a shorter round. The term "group" includes a single player.

did you ask? if not, then you should have just skipped them and played the hole later. if yes and they said no, then you should have just skipped them and played the hole later. moral of the story: if people are slowing you down and you're only one, skip them. you don't owe them an explanation.

If you were hitting into them - close enough that could 'mistake' your ball for theirs - I wouldn't have let you pass either. Maybe they appeared to be snooty and rude, but hitting into the group ahead is just as rude.

I'm all for letting smaller groups through but I agree that this can be an issue. I've played in four and threesomes before where the starter kept sending off singles behind us. You let one or two play through and then you end up spending your whole time letting others through. I know the starter should group these but often it's ignored.

When I play alone, if someone lets me through, that's great. If not I just try to take my time unless they're really slow.

At my former club, you would see six-somes all the time. However, I never had a problem playing through. As soon as someone in the group would see me, they would immediately wave me on.

I have had people double back (100+ yards) and pick up my ball from the fairway. Not saying this is the case with this buy, but it is possible to have someone from the group in front of you pickup your ball without hitting into them.
