3 weeks ago I was playing the best golf of my life (shot a career low 81, almost had a hole in one, had my first round with multiple birdies). I haven't picked up a club since, and I played yesterday....could barely break 50.

I couldn't hit a drive 220, and shanked a couple of balls bad. It felt like it was the first time I ever picked up a club.

Has this happened to you and what can I do to fix it? I played so bad yesterday, I almost quit.

Don't swing so hard. Take a week off. Lower your expectations. Take nice, easy swings and make good contact. Does anything feel weird in your swing right now?

For me, I just take time off and seems to do the best job.

I was sorta in the same situation. I was working on improving my worst score. For a couple weeks -- even playing what I considered bad -- I grinded out rounds all in the 80s. I was proud of myself... setting my new goal "never shoot 90s" again!

Then one day I was playing with my brother.... played well on a tough course for the first 8 holes. Tee'd off on 9, and hit a good drive. From that approach shot on..... I kept shanking shots! I couldnt hit an iron or wedge to save my life. Felt like I kept hitting the hosel. No idea what happened.... as I still can't remember the last time I actually struggled to make good contact. The problem plagued me for a week or two. Decided to take a break until I FELT like I really really wanted to play again. It wasn't all better magically, but it was far better than it was.

I remember those days but fortunatly it hasn't happend in quite a while. One thing I always did was get back to basics and slow everything down.

I think when you hit that really good stretch when you are driving the ball well, hitting crisp irons and putting well, you think you become invinceable. So with that thinking you try a little harder with the driver, and try and pull off the miracle iron shots. When you do those things, your swing gets out of whack. I think that everyone can swing a club comfortably up to 100%. As soon as you swing to 101%, things start going wrong. I don't know if this is what caused your problem, just one opinion of what may have went wrong.

Go back to swinging easy and just look to make good contact off the tee. Use one or two extra clubs with your irons and hit 3/4 punch shots while focusing on just making good contact.

Some have mentioned taking time off. I never like doing that if I have a bad round or couple of rounds. I want to get right back out there so that my most recent memory is a good one and not one of a bad day full of shanks. If I take two weeks off, I will spend all my time thinking about what went wrong.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Yeah, I've definitely lost it. I'm actually in the process of getting it back. 2 weeks ago and before that, I was getting better and better, striking the ball beautifully, sinking all my putts, so on and so forth. I actually carded a career best 73 (+1). And then it all left me. The next week, I couldn't get my tempo going, couldn't get the club on the ball, couldn't swing inside my body, couldn't hit a putt. Last week I shot an 85 (+13 on the same course that I shot no higher than +8 on the last 6 times playing on it, most being around +3 and +4. It was just a huge hurdle for me to get over. After a couple more days keeping at it on the range, I started to get a bit more feel back. A little more stability in my takeaway, a more consistent swing plane, and better ball striking and my putting stroke was getting more solid. I'm going out tomorrow on this course a ways away with a good friend to go see if I can bring back anything good.

No worries. If it was once there, it will be there again. Just gotta keep our heads up and keep swinging.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I've been lucky also with not having much more than my putting disappear from time to time. I remember when it used to though best advice just slow it down step away from the game for a week maybe go to the range or play 9. The reason to step back a little is because it might be your swing right now but if you keep playing it will quickly become a mental thing.

I don't know if it happens to others but sometimes I just think about it too much and you start confusing yourself or something I think. There are times when I feel like I forgot my swing and have to run outside with a club to see if I have it and luckily it reappears.

But sometimes old feelings creep back in. I've usually found it's a mental thing. For me just taking easy swings and being surprised with the distance is usually enough to get me back on track. I find I go through bad stretches when I try and hit it too far, or I should say swing too hard.

Heck yes I lose it sometimes. Usually it is a timing issue with me. If I concentrate being soft and slow on my first move down I can recover although sometimes not during a bad round. Soft and slow and don't disturb the butt angle of the club in the first move down usualy works for me.

I'm down to a 10 handicap. At this rate, I'll get to scratch atΒ 90 years old!

Yes.

My game went missing sometime between the end of my round on Saturday and when i stepped up to the first tee today.

Not completely gone, but it was a struggle. I scored ok, but a lot of lucky shots. Thin 8 irons running up next to the hole, pulled wedges getting great kicks, etc. At least my chipping and putting where there, but anything outside of 10 yards was a complete crap shoot.

I know what drove it away, however-over swinging and getting lazy with my lower body. I'll give my irons a nice warm bath tomorrow, and give them and my woods a week off. Hopefully they'll forgive my transgressions and bring my game back.

Has this happened to you and what can I do to fix it? I played so bad yesterday, I almost quit.

Last friday...decent fw % and iron play leading to fair amount of GIR. Absolutely horrible short game. None...zip...zilch. What to do about it I guess depends on what part of the game went south. I immediately took a lesson to bounce some thoughts off my coach and since then I've gotten to a practice facility with only a wedge and practiced from 100 yds and in over and over and over.

Timely thread for me. My last round was a WTF round if there ever was one. I had been doing well this summer. I thought I had grooved a workable swing. I was having around every week where I was parring 4, 5 or six holes on a given nine. Making good contact. Then I laid off a week for vaction and various and sundry summertime distractions. When I went back to play a round: Disaster!

I did not once make solid contact with the ball. Most of the balls went "CLUNK" off the clubface. Most were very weak slight fades to the right. No kidding, I was driving the ball 40 yards less than normal or more.
I would have to club down by one or two clubs to get the ball to the green. Was I hitting on the heel, the bottom or top of the club? I was nowhere near the sweet spot or near having the clubhead square to the ball apparently. I have been to the driving range twice since and still can't recover. Better but way inconsistent. If I do make good contact i pull the ball left or I hit a fade which is way unlike me. Just effing crazy.

Earlier this year I shot a 59 for 9 holes and only shot that well because my short game and putting were so good. In the previous 3 weeks I had shot a 72, 78 and 80. I recovered a couple weeks later, but was so frustrated for a couple rounds there I was ready to quit - OK, not really but almost.

Sure. It happens to everyone, just on different platatudes. My short game and putting is really weak right now for some reason, and im either not getting up and down or im three putting often. Im struggling just to stay in the low 80's, at the moment. Though a few weeks ago, I was routinley shooting in a low to mid 70's and even had a -1 70 round from 6800 yards. Its golf.

My game/swing is GONE. I have no clue where the ball is going and can't make solid contact at all it seems. Between OB and hazards and coming up short because I'm not hitting the ball solid there is not a word to describe how I feel vs how hard I've been working on getting better.
