Thinking of buying a set of irons this winter. Been playing 3 years and have used an old set of tommy armours.

Basically looking for an in between set, as I think I'm a few years away from investing in player-irons. At the moment, I still prefer a soft and forgiving feel.

Some irons I've tried are the Taylormade r7 draw and callaway x-20. Didn't like the offset of the r7 and didn't like the feel of the callaways with that big clunky clubhead (no offense). I guess I'm more partial to a traditonal looking/feeling iron.

Any suggestions on what I should check out? <$500 ideally. Thanks.

Why not try the regular (i.e. non-draw) R7s?

Try out the Nike Slingshot OSS irons if you can find any. I'm sad that they don't make them anymore because they are a spectacular club. Even at my handicap they still perform exceptionally: shot a -2, 34 on 9 holes yesterday at my home course from the tips (6800) and I owe it mostly to my irons. So forgiving, and yet versitile. I suggest you give them a try if possible. I haven't hit the new Slingshots yet, so I can't really compare them to the ones I have now, but I'm sure they are still pretty good.

I'd also recommend the AP1's, and the Cobras, but the OP said he doesn't really like the offset so I don't think he would like the G10's

Didn't like the offset of the r7 and didn't like the feel of the callaways (X20) with that big clunky clubhead (no offense). ...

Try the Callaway

X22 Tours . I hit these several times this spring before I switched out clubs. Excellent feedback on impact - can tell if its a bad, OK, or excellent shot just from the feel. The smaller clubhead will get the ball out of the rough better than the X20s. I went with the X20s because I was going from stiff to regular, and hadn't switched irons in 14 years, didn't want to be too adventurous. Also, got a great deal on slightly used X20s. I like the X20s, but they do feel sticky out of the rough. If I could start shooting in the 80s regularly, I might switch to X22 Tours with lightweight steel R shafts.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Thinking of buying a set of irons this winter. Been playing 3 years and have used an old set of tommy armours.

Which Tommy Armours are you playing? Why are you a few years away from a players iron? If you're a true 12.5 hdcp, you'll grow into a set of players CB in no time - if they're the right ones for you.

I play blades and blade type irons and they're all different. Some are easier to hit and some are more enjoyable to hit. My Titleists are less reliable than my Mizunos, which are harder to control than my old MacGregors, which seem to result in higher scores than my Hogans. They all look and feel great in their own way. If I give a strong recommendation to find a set of vintage 1994 Hogan Apex irons it will only be because I love them - not because they'd work for you. Try different sets - borrow a couple sets if you can. Hit them at the range, on the course (short par 4s, long 3s, approaches, chipping etc) and you'll know what to do.

Mizuno MP600 driver, Cleveland '09 Launcher 3-wood, Callaway FTiz 18 degree hybrid, Cleveland TA1 3-9, Scratch SS8620 47, 53, 58, Cleveland Classic 2 mid-mallet, Bridgestone B330S, Sun Mountain four5.

I Play Cleveland CG2's and love them..They're really cheap at ebay. You should try to buy a bunch of demo 6 irons on ebay and take them to the range...they can be had for $5-$10 each...

I'll second the Cleveland testament. I think they're great game improvement clubs. I currently have TA6s, and have hit TA7s extensively and like them a lot.

That said, the Ping G10 is probably the best GI set available.

yeah, the Wilson Staff Ci7's are some awesome irons and can be bought brand new for around $230 in most cases.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Wilson-Staff-Ci7...item2ea9990aba also, if you are looking for dirt cheap, try a set of Tad Moore TM-02 irons. I bought a brand new set for $100 last year and they are honestly a very good iron and VERY forgiving. you can get them on ebay anywhere from $100 - $200 a set. theres a guy selling a rare black oxide set of TM-02's right now on ebay for $150: http://cgi.ebay.com/VERY-RARE-Tad-Mo...item1e595a6554

Will do.

I have the TA 845 irons. I guess my version of player irons = hard to hit. But maybe that's not the case. I've tried my friends' tileist irons (704 cb, and DCI) and they feel harsh to me.

Will do. I have an old wilson fat shaft 5-iron that I love hitting.

Love all the pings I've hit, and have a cleveland gap wedge that I like too.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll be sure to check those out, and the nike oss too.

I tried a bunch of irons today, and am leaning toward the TM r7 (non-draw) and Wilson Ci7. There were other irons I liked hitting, but I am kind of picky about the way a club looks to my eyes at address. The r7 and Ci7 just felt like I could play a round tomorrow with them and be totally comfortable.

Thanks again for your suggestions.

If my pinemeadow irons are really built to specs similar to the r7s as they claim, you should enjoy them. I think if I can improve my game through some of the tips you gave me and my upcoming lessons, I will be able to take advantage of the clubs I have. When I do make good contact if feels very good and when I don't they certainty help me out. Off topic somewhat but I also like the black finish at address. Good luck with your selection.
