So i have Finally decided that i want to paint fill my sc. I have a few questions before i begin.
1) What can be paint filled on the putter. And what can be taken off with acetone. I am looking at my putter now.
a) the scotty down the neck
b) The 3 circles on the back
c) The cameron under the circles
d) On the bottom All the wording
e) on the face the 3 circles and the cameron

2) What would you use to remove all the paint
3) What would you use to pain all the small words.
4) What type of paint ?

i know this has been asked before but we all know these putters are not cheap and do not want to mess it up thanks in advance.

Also would there be a way to stamp my name onto this. What would i need. would this ruin the putter?

Considering new Woods what you think ?

you can fill all of the colors, but the best thing to do is just send it in to scotty cameron to do it for you

Yeah, they will do up to 3 colors. I believe the charge is $45 (that's his minimum order amt.). Or, if you want a complete restoration (refinish head - new paintfill (3 colors of your choice), a new grip, shaft and headcover, it costs $145.

Sending my putter off to the Cameron custom shop for various things and was thinking about getting new paint fill, but I just can't see paying $72 for the new paint fill. So, when it comes back, I'm considering doing the paint fill myself.

I've Googled and it seems that Testors Acrylic is the best paint to use, but I'm wonder how to get the translucent effect that the Studio Selects have? On the Testors FAQ section it just says "Mix 50% Enamel and 50% Gloss or Flat Clear" to get a transparent effect. Has anyone tried this? Or is there an actual paint that already transparent (from another company maybe?).

If you're willing to invest in sending it to the shop, why not just spend the few extra bucks and get it done the right way? I sent mine off about a month ago (impatiently waiting on it's return). If you buy a headcover, and grip, the paintfill is free? I don't think it's worth the risk of having Scotty's work done on some parts, and you doing your own work on others. My opinion, your money, your descision...

Good luck.

Doing it yourself

is the right way. The only time I trust someone else when it comes to my equipment is when the work is so substantial that I can not contain it myself (the only example I can think of is the actual manufacturing of the clubs ). I trust myself to do a superior job is almost every capacity.

I'm sending it in for other reasons. SC charges a minimum $45 for any service regardless of if what you need done costs anything or not (loft and lie checks/adjustments are free). So I'm getting a new grip put on and a stamp on the back center dot which brings the total to $45 (since I'm charged at least that much anyway, might as well buy something). Then after they add in shipping charges to send it back to you, etc. My total ended up being like $75 I think. So, even though I'm sending it in to have some work done, I still don't want to pay what he charges for the paint fill. I also do not want to pay for a new headcover. You have to buy a $37 grip and a $72 head cover before the paint fill is free. The grips aren't worth $37 and the headcovers definitely aren't worth $72 and the paint fill alone isn't worth $72. So I just refuse to pay that basically. Plus I already am confident I know how to do it the right way, I just need to know how to get the translucent effect of the paint? Even if I mess it up, I can leave the paint fill empty and be just fine. I like the look of no paint fill as well.

The translucent effect is due to the type of paint you use.

Like someone else said, If you buy the grip and headcover you get the free paintfill. You can sell the grip for about $40 profit if you can pull it...which is easy. You can sell the headcover for at least the price you bought it for. So you are almost coming out ahead. If you havent done your own paintfill before, I wouldnt start on a Cameron. The resale value goes way down on a Cameron if its not done by the Cam. CS. Its goes up a little when its done by them. Just a thought.

You're already getting a grip. Just buy a headcover and get the paint for free. You never know when you might lose your own headcover. And the last thing I'd want to do is screw up a $300 putter because I didn't want to invest in the cost of an extra headcover and have the custom shop do the paintfill. That's crazy. If you're that strapped for money, sell the Cameron and buy an Odyssey.

Definitely will. I bought some translucent blue paint today so now just have to wait until the putter gets back from Cameron.

I've never done a paint fill before, but from everything I've read, it's not brain surgery. Get the acetone, paint and syringe tip applicators and that's all their is to it. I can't see the paint fill change causing the resell value to go down. That's like saying if I put a different grip put on it myself, that it's going to make the resell value go down as well. At any rate, I plan on keeping it, so no need to worry about the resell value.

True, I'm already getting a grip, but I'm getting a $15 grip, not a $37 grip which is what's required to get the free paint fill (when you purchase a $72 headcover as well). Maybe I just see it differently than others but I really don't see how I'm going to screw this putter up by attempting to change the paint fill. Not like I'm trying to change the lie myself using a crowbar and vice grips. Worst case scenario is that I simply leave it without any paint fill which I think looks pretty slick too. I'm not strapped for cash, but I still refuse to pay $15 to ship my putter to them, $72 for the paint fill, and then $20 for them to ship it back when for $2.00 I can buy enough paint to change the paint fill on 30 putters. Regardless of if I have the money or not, it's still not worth the money to get it done by them IMHO.

That definitely changes things. I probably wouldn't ever pay $37 for a grip, and I didn't realize you had to spend that much to get the "free" paint fill. I just saw the post earlier about getting a grip and headcover for a free paint fill, so I'm thinking like $15 for a grip and $20-$30 for a headcover and you've got your paint along with a new headcover and a nice new grip. But if you've got to buy a high dollar grip and headcover, then I guess it probably isn't worth it. I certainly wouldn't pay $72 to have someone paint mine. But...I probably wouldn't paint it myself either. I'm sure it's hard to screw up, but I'd still have a tough time taking a paintbrush to my $300 putter. My bad on being misinformed.

Definitely agree. If I could have got a $15 grip and one of the less expensive headcovers and got the paintfill free, I'd have done it. But, as it is you have to spend $109 to get the "free" paint fill and after you pay to ship it there and pay for them to ship it back, the paintfill suddenly has gotten expensive. I have two Studio Select headcovers already so that's one reason I wasn't even looking for new headcover. Won't be using a paint brush on my putter either. . I'll be using one of these guys: http://www.hobbymasters.com/a-westst...torbottle.aspx so the paint is even and should (hopefully) turn out exactly as it would if SC did it in the custom shop.

  • 4 weeks later...

So, I sent my putter off to the Cameron Custom shop for a loft/lie adjustment because a local guy screwed it up (long story). They charge you $45 even though loft/lie adjustments are free. So I bought a nice new black Cameron Cord grip (to replace the red) and got a Jackpot Johnny stamp on the face, both of which totaled the $45 they were going to charge me anyway for the loft/lie adjustment. I didn't want to have them change the paint fill simply because I can't see paying $72 for them to do it.

So, here's my first attempt at doing it myself:

It's not difficult. Here's my putter, just finished it up today: http://thesandtrap.com/forum/threads...tom-Paint-Fill

You need: Acetone, Toothpick or Needle and these work the best: http://www.hobbymasters.com/a-westst...torbottle.aspx (I get the "flow 2")

Just remove the old paint fill and then add the new paint fill. Once you get the new paint fill on, use acetone on a paper town and genlty rub your finder over what you've filled to remove any excess that you got outside of the words, stamps, etc. Don't worry about staying in the lines, not nessessary.

Pretty straight forward.

As for stamping, I'd send it back.

    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
    • Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.
    • Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
