I recently went to a driver fitting, I was told my swing speed is high enough to fit me in a XStiff flex.

That being said, if I am a Xflex in my driver, should I theoretically be an xflex in all my other clubs?

I do not swing my irons nearly as fast, and relatively speaking, I think my iron swing speed is in the stiff category.

Is it normal or unusual to have differing flexes throughout your bag?

There are plenty of examples of people with stiffer shafts in their driver than their other clubs (including 3-wood). There are also examples of folks with softer shafts in their driver than their other clubs.

In other words, grab what works best for each club. X-stiff driver doesn't mean anything about any other club.

Good to hear, I was just making sure that, ideally, all my swing speeds should be proportional (relatively speaking) to the same shaft flex.

Completely normal. Especially since not all shafts and flexes are created the same. I have stiff in my driver and hybrid. Extra stiff in the 3-wood and irons.

Shaft flex has as much to do with swing quality as it does with swing speed.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Most of us play different brands of clubs within our bags. There seems to be a fairly wide range of stiffness between ratings from the various manufacturers. A "stiff" from one could be "regular" from another.

I'll just try them and see what works best for me. Current bag is all stiff but that hasn't always been the case.

Even within the same manufacturer there can be differences from woods with graphite shafts to irons with iron shafts.

Get your irons checked too. SS is a component of the flex equation. Tempo is the second. The third is shaft manufacturer. No all shafts grade ot the same.

Lots of different thoughts on this. Jack Nicklaus told of the shaft mix his Ohio State golf coach Bob Kepler used. Kepler had...
* 2-3 iron: A flex
* 4-6 iron: R flex
* 7 through wedges: S flex

Kepler's idea: The longer the shaft, the more help you needed to get the ball airborne.

Back in the 1970s, lots of players went R for woods (get distance) and S for irons (get control).

Some people now go the other way. A 60-something pro at a local course has R flex shafts in all his clubs | except for Stiffs in his Driver, 3W and 3 iron. He says he takes a full backswing, easily flexes the longer shafts, and likes the control he gets from S.

Anyone here with more knowledge in this area please speak up. I am kinda asking here. I know anything longer will theoretically have to flex more merely due to physics, with all other factors being equal.
Therefore would it not be true that to maintain the same clubhead position at impact, the longer the shaft then the stiffer it should be to overcome the flex while maintaining the same swing speed with all clubs from L wedge to driver?
Eg. A stiff shaft in a PW theoretically equates to a EXstiff in a driver

The reason I ask is that I have always been taught to swing the same with each club to build consistency in the swing.

Reading reviews on the shaft I have in my driver, it plays more like an X-stiff than stiff, but I love it even with my moderate swing speed (~100 mph). I like the control I get with it, even if it costs me a few yards. Hit what you like.

I have a regular flex in my hybrid which I can hit 3 miles if I catch it right, but I can also hit some "power draws" with it from time to time so I use it mostly for recovery shots or when I have some room for error on the left.... thinking about getting a stiff shafted hybrid at some point but it is a carry over from my previous iron set and it super workable for low benders from behind trees and stuff.

I don't think the shaft-flex discussion disagrees with your

swing the same idea. Rather, shaft mixers would say they can swing the same because of the different flexes harmonize the different clubs. Eg. stiff PW vs. XS Driver. From a couple of years back, the Uniflex shaft supposedly varies its functional stiffness according to how hard you swing on a given shot. Project X has the flighted shafts for irons. While not altering the swing speed, the flighted shafts do influence trajectory. (Give extra lift on the long irons, help control lift on short irons.)

    • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
