I thought a fun thread would be for us to share some stories about how our spouses (I was originally going to say "wives" but thought it should be gender neutral!) support or don't support our addictions to golf. It will give some a chance to brag, and some a chance to whine.

Personally, I couldn't have a more supportive wife for golf, even though she has never played once and has no desire to do so. But she enjoys golf, and has read all my non-instructional books such as "The Greatest Game Ever Played", "The Match", etc., and I'll even find her watching the golf channel sometimes when I get home. But more importantly, she is very supportive of me spending a lot of time playing and practicing. An example of how supportive: last summer for her 50th birthday, we spent 4 days staying at Pebble Beach, largely so I could play golf. Her birthday, but I get the best benefits! But even more amazing, on one of the days of that visit we were going to visit my mother-in-law, who lives about 80 miles away. But a few weeks before the trip, my wife actually suggested that she go visit her mother by herself, and I should then go play one of the other Monterey courses I would not otherwise be able to play. Amazing!

She also is very encouraging of me not only playing every week, but also practice and lessons, even suggesting at times that I should stop by the range on the way home from work more often. Of course one of my friends suggested that there is only one good reason that she is so supportive of me getting more practice and playing time - she's having an affair! But I guess if that let's me golf more with support, I can live with that!

OK, so my story falls into the "brag" category, but would love to hear how others fare.

Thats awesome that you have that relationship with her. I am a golf addict and have been for about a year. I sleep, eat, drink, shit golf.

when i typically say something about golf to her i get told to shut the f*ck up about golf.

So maybe she will change but probably not. Im walking next year instead of taking a cart to get my love handles gone. She is pregnant right now and im going to drag her to walk to when i play to work off the fat. haha maybe she will learn to appreciate it.

Hahaha, I was thinking that the whole time while reading that. Seriously though, my wife is supportive but not to that level. She loves that I love to play, and we both love that our 4 1/2 year old daughter is really starting to get into hitting the range with daddy. That part is cool, I just think it's important to realize that everyone deserves to pursue a passion in life. I let my wife have her time, it's mutual respect.

Mrs Eagle hates me,she hates golf and all other sports.I cant watch any sport on TV without her moaning, every time I leave the house she has a strop on,she wont come to the golfclub for any social functions because all we talk about is golf. She gets the right hump when I go on golf trips with my mates,I wouldnt mind but I only go about five times a year and I did take her away for the weekend in 1986 the ungratefull cow. Shes right made up at the moment though as we are snowed under, looks like no golf for about a month by the weather forcast, she reckons it wil give m a chance to pay her some attention and get a few of those long standing jobs done around the house.
Little does she know,Ive just booked up a couple of flights to Spain for me and the brother and a couple of rounds for next weekend.........he he!

My wife is absolutely unbelievable when it comes to letting me play and practice. I will give you an example she went on a 3 day excursion with 20 other women this weekend for some sort of scrap booking thing. We have 2 kids, 5 and 2, she arranged a baby sitter to be at my house for 630 am today and tomorrow until I got home from golf. ISN'T THAT NUTS! Yes, we could say she is with Pedro my lawn keeper but I truly do not think so... I am in the military and have been deployed so many damn times she understands I should have my time to do what I want and that is GOLF...

I have one for you . . . .my girlfriend doesn't really like golf but she'll play the occassional round at the par3 course or go with me to the range sometimes. The other day at the range said with a straight face "you should keep practicing and get on the pro tour, those guys make lots of money". And she was really not just mocking me. I can't even hit the ball, lol!

Oh man you are so screwed I just had a baby girl... you may never golf again. Actually my wife is pretty awesome... I have played a fair bit despite being pretty busy lately. Good luck with that walking off the fat thing too... is she going to be carrying your clubs and the baby... if so send some pics of that.

when i typically say something about golf to her i get told to shut the f*ck up about golf.

I only get that when I have talked about golf during our entire dinner after we spent the morning golfing and the afternoon watching golf.

I wouldnt mind but I only go about five times a year and I did take her away for the weekend in 1986 the ungratefull cow.

Holy shit... this is funny stuff... ungratefull cow...priceless.

In all seriousness... my wife picked up the game a few years ago and it is great playing with her. It allows me to add a game or two into vacations (if they aren't entirely built around golf to begin with). It also makes her much more understanding about me going to play, even when not with her (which is more often than with her).

Usually she doesn't give me too much grief; for Christmas she usually gets me some gift certificates to area courses and this year to a range where she is willing to go hit with me...maybe she'll come around one day!

My wife is very supportive of my golfing. she does not play but on our honeymoon she allowed me to play four times while she rode in the cart.

I heard of other wives hiding their husband golf shoes to prevent them from playing, so I feel very lucky!

I'm lucky that my girlfriend is very supportive. Before playing golf all I did was sit at my computer and work so she's happy that I get outside and get some fresh air. I did feel bad about leaving early on Saturday morning for golf, but she admitted she likes the house to herself for a while to potter around!
She has even sat down and watched the closing holes of the odd tournament on TV with me!

So far it sounds like we are all very lucky.

Cheers

Sounds like in general must of us are lucky to have pretty supportive spouses - lucky us! As I mentioned when I started this thread, my wife is very supportive. But I wanted to share another example. When the US Open was at Torrey Pines she went with me for one of the days, and absolutely loved it - when it went to playoff, she went looking for tix for Monday and tried to figure out how to get out of work, but it didn't work out. But now the great part. When she heard that the 2010 Open was at Pebble, she was the first to say that we just had to go. No choice. And despite my attempts to suggest that maybe we should just go for a day or two, she has been pretty insistent that we go all 4 days. I am planning on trying to make up for it by staying in a very nice resort in Carmel and encouraging her to take advantage of their top-notch spa. But I still find it amazing that she is so supportive and interested, especially given that she's never swung a club in her life.

Overall, it sounds like most of us are pretty lucky. We all need to make sure we don't forget it!

Clambake,
You sure have a keeper. I also am fortunate. My wife does not play, though before we married she used to accompany me to the range sometimes and we would putt together. She's a decent putter but would probably never enjoy the game of golf. She is very supportive however, only today for example she said I should play a round tomorrow even though there's lots to do around the house and we have a social engagement. She understands my need to get outside and chase the little ball around the track. She bought me my Mizunos, my range finder and various other golfing goodies - most Christmases are golf-enhancement opportunities. Also, she likes to watch hours and hours of golf on TV with me and is surprisingly knowledgable and insightful about what's happening, for a non-player. She likes to follow certain sports and actually knows more about football than I do, having been interested in the game all her adult life (I came to american football later in life, after emigrating from soccer-land).

She also keeps insisting that I play a round or two at Pebble one day. I told her about your thread on your experience there, in fact I think she read some of it - she really gets it. During a professional conference we both attended in Monterey a couple years ago she took me on the 17 mile drive tour (she'd done it before) and we had dinner at the casual restaurant at Pebble. She enjoyed the whole experience almost as much as I did, but of course my excitement didn't hurt any. I couldn't really ask for more support, especially from someone who is not active in sports herself.

Nice thread.

Come on guys ,this group lovefest with the women has to stop, you are giving the rest of us a bad name. I have a dummy set of clubs, there an old set of Rams that I leave by the front door when I "have to pop into work" for a few hours.

Little does she know I have a locker full of Mizunos

The day I walk through the door and she says "did you have a good game" I'll know something is up,she wants a new cat or her credit card needs paying off!

My wife and I have played several US Open courses together from Torrey to Pinhurst to the Black and she keeps up with her wheelie on the Black and even broke 100 {95} on Torrey South so she is as addicted as I am.

That's totally how my wife approaches it, it's my passion and the one thing I spend money on, and she supports that. She really loves arts and crafts and I support that. Of course, she has no idea how I could possibly be so obsessed with hitting a little ball around. I think the thing she cares about is my scoring well so I don't come home disgruntled

My wife is cool with me playing and practicing a fair bit; I have a job that allows me to do this and have a fair amount of time with family too, so that is a bonus. For my 40th last April, she bought me my Scotty, so that has to say something.

    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
    • Ah ok I misunderstood. But you did bring to light an oversight on my part.
    • I was agreeing with you/jumping off from there.
