7 wood vs 2 hybrid

I'm picking up a Callaway Original Steelhead 4 wood (16.8*) and I got thinking, what about getting the matching Steelhead 7 wood instead of the hybrid I have been looking at? Now, I have tried every hybrid under the sun, and I was dead set that the Bobby Jones 2H (19*) was the one for me. Part of the reason I liked the BJ was because it sets up more like a traditional fairway wood. As a side note, I could never find a the venerable BJ Workshop 20* hybrid to demo but I was also considering that one. It is available online right now.

The Cally Original Steelhead has 20* of loft and a 41" shaft. This compares to the 19* loft of the BJ and its 40.25 shaft. I had always considered a 7 wood an old man's club, as my dad carries one, but hey, you gotta use what works. And the Steelheads are pretty easy to hit as far as fairway woods go. So I was just wondering which route I should go. I will be keeping my 3 and 4 irons, which measure 22 and 25 degrees, respectiveley. I will be dropping the 2 iron. Any thoughts?

Never Ht a 7 wood but would put in a word for the Nickent 2h that I got a couple of years ago. I absolutely love it. It replaced my 5 wood for distance so a 2h might not be what your looking for maybe a 4 h to replace the 7 wood?

Hmm, I was expecting to get about 210-15 yards out of a 20* 7 wood. I get about 198 yards out of my 22* 3 iron. Also, the 7 wood I am considering has a steel shaft.

This is the same as the 5w V Hybrid thread.

I'd choose the 7 wood because it'll go further and because a bigger head looks better to me.

I had always considered a 7 wood an old man's club, as my dad carries one, but hey, you gotta use what works.

Before the Hyrids came on strong, a couple of the younger PGA players had a 3W, 7W mix (often dropping out the 2 iron).

Also, the 4W, 7W Steelheads might make a nice combo as far as set-up/alignment goes.

I think I will give the 7 wood a shot. I just bought it with the Memphis 10 shaft in darn near mint condition. Gotta be worth a shot for $17 bucks.

I picked up a 2h just to give it a try as an option to a 5w. It really filled that spot well, plus I can sweep a ball out of longer grass with it (something I can't do with the 5w). I'm playing a 2h 3h and 4h now with Driver/3w, this combination sees to work well right now(during the winter). I will be able to give a difinitive answer about it when the grass greens up and thickens in the spring.

I have a Callaway Big Bertha Heavenwood that I trade out almost regularly with my Cleveland Launcher 2h...I hit both of them about the same but when one is in the doghouse I use the other haha

I hit an Adams Tight lies 7W and i love it! Hits about 205-215 for me and very easy to hit. I cant compare because i dont hit any hybrids but just my opinion.

What kind of SS do you have? I am hoping to get about that exact yardage range you mention. I will report back after I get my club.

That 7w you're looking into is 1 degree stronger then the Spalding Eagle 5w I use (picked it up this fall for $CDN 20 - it has a firm graphite shaft and feels pretty solid).

I use it for my 240-250 yd club (when 260 or more is dead) but this is at indoor golf. When I'm not at a simulator (this summer) it'll hopefully be my 230 club. I'm also finally looking to replace a 2-iron - painful to admit. My Wilson Staff Fybrid (19*) is a good 2i substitute, as is my 19* Titleist 5w. Getting older sucks.

Just my two cents worth - I have the Cally 7wood you are describing and i added a Ping 16* H about 2 years ago (both graphite). The 7W flies higher and longer than the 2H. If it's windy or a very tight course, i will put the 2H in the bag, on a longer course that is more wide open i will put the 7W in the bag. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Thanks for the help man. I was thinking that the lower torque steel shaft might help keep the trajectory down a tad. We shall see. Probably still will end up getting the Bobby Jones 2H this summer.

Isn't a 2H more closely related to a 5W? I am currently on this very decision, but between 2H and 5W. I haven't found a 2H I like yet.

A lot depends upon the loft of the club and the length of the shaft. The 2H and 7W I was looking at were only a degree apart at most 19 vs 20*, respectively (some spec sheets for the 7w actually say it is 19*) and the shaft length was within 3/4 inch, 40.25 vs. 41" on the 7W. We shall see which one goes further.

My #2 Hyb. has a 17* loft compared to most #3 hybrids that have 19* - 21*. (ex. Taylomades are 19* - Pings are 21*)

So your 19* hyb.(should be marked #3H) would be closer to the 7W and the 17*hyb. (#2H) would compare to a 5W. Remember a standard 3W is 15* or #1 Hyb.

Have been playing with a 7W before there were hybrids. It replaced the 2I and I would choke down for the high 190-200 yd shot. It is also great out of the rough.

Tried hitting hybrids, but the heavier head feels, not necessarily better or worse but, uncomfortable in comparison. If you like hitting woods, 7W is a good club IMO. Tiger plays with a 5W instead of a hybrid, probably for the same reason.
