Mizuno MP-57 irons with DG S300...a little confused. Please help!

Hi All,

I currently play Mizuno MP-57 irons with DG S300 shafts in them. The last couple times I've been out, I've really noticed that my shots are getting up really high. I'm getting good distance out of them, but it almost feels like it's balooning a bit. The shots do not have a piercing ball flight like I would like to see.

I was curious what you think the cause of this may be. Any thoughts?

The other thing is that I have my backup set which are the Callaway X-22 Tour irons with PX Flighted 6.0 shafts. I was considering maybe swapping out the shafts to see if that helped in any way. If memory serves me correctly, the ball flight was a bit lower and much more piercing that the DG S300. What I can't seem to find is what the tip size is of the X-22 Tours. I know the MP-57 is .355", but can't find the Callaways. Anyone know what it is?

Any help with be greatly appreciated!

Sorry but I don't have an answer, but another question instead... Does anybody know where to find a listing of what clubs have what TP sizes? I would like to know for the different sets that i have if i ever want to swap a shaft for another...

I had the same problem at the beginning of last year.... I went to see my swing coach and he saw that I was cocking my wrist wrong....leading me to add loft to the club at impact... if you don't think you're doing this.... there's easy drills to keep from doing that... if you're not doing it..then change the shaft out... I play PX's which produce a lower ball flight....
if only you were in Jersey.. I'd let you hit my set.

fold up a scorecard and place it under your left armpit. that helps me rotate more and drive the ball. u might be casting too soon

I don't think I am cocking my wrist wrong. I am hitting my PW around 125-130 yards. What are some drills I can try to make sure I am not cocking my wrists wrong just in case? I can work on those and see if it helps in any way. I went to the local GS yesterday after work and hit some MP-57 with PX Flighted 5.5 shafts and the ball flight was basically the same on the LM (not exactly sure how accurate they are though).

That setup (MP57 w/ DG300s) is the exact setup I play and I was fitted for that for the exact reason of keeping the balls down. I really think it might be swing thing. You might be releasing a bit too high and not getting enough extension at your follow through. Take a loo at you divots too. I can usually tel what I did wrong just by looking at my divot...or lack of divot.....

That's what my understanding was too. The DG's are supposed to be lower ball flight, but that's not happening for me and it definitely isn't piercing either. I'm wondering if the flex is a little too soft which would be cause it to pop up the way it does. It's not like I'm loosing distance...it just goes high. My range doesn't have real grass, so I can only look at my divots when playing. I generally take good sized divots starting just at or past the ball. Many times, they are quite deep too.

Any drills you can point me to in order for me to make sure I'm not releasing too high?

well there's the simple: swing with a head cover under your arm pit.
place a tee in your golf glove and if at any point it touches your wrist/forearm during the swing...then you're opening the club too much during the backswing.
also try swinging in slow motion and see how your club face is squaring to the ball.
also maybe you're putting too much spin on the ball with your shots??? have you tried to see the difference with a ball that'll spin a little less?

I will definitely try putting something under my arm pit and see how that goes, as well as the slow motion. I was actually working on having a slightly bowed wrist at the range yesterday as I have a tendancy to get my wrist cupped on the backswing.

As far as having too much spin, I don't see that really being an issue as I rarely put too much spin on the ball (either one bounce stop or pull it back 2-3 feet), plus it was range balls I was hitting really high and those things are like rocks. I typically play NXT Tours if that gives any insight.

I think the Project X shafts are supposed to have a more boring trajectory. Now that doesn't mean they'll fly lower but that the trajectory isn't an arch like with the DG S300.

I can notice the difference between my clubs and when I hit the PX 5.5 to get custom fit. The S300 fly just as high with an arching trajectory while the PX 5.5 launch high and then have a penetrating ballflight.

I think I call it piercing and you call it boring. Maybe it's just that I find the boring trajectory a little more appealing to my eye. Would the boring trajectory be more beneficial than the arch of the DG's?

I think it is the indian and not the arrow.

They are very similiar shafts. The flight and weight are almost identical.

So I have not hit the MP-57s outdoors fitted with PX shafts, but would be clubhead be a cause for penetrating vs arch type ball flight? What I mean is, the X-22 Tours I have get a more penetrating ball flight and they're fitted with PX vs my MP-57s which have DGs that are producing an arch.

      Yea Club Rat said it. I really enjoyed the Senator and the Judge, then over to Grand National where there a couple good courses plus a fun par 3. The one I do play whenever I visit there is Ross Bridge; something about this course that is just good fun.       Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
