I have been contemplating moving on to Blade Irons, for no other reason than because I love the look of blade irons. I am a 12 handicap and getting better. I have been playing game improvement irons for the past 4 years, (G10's, Rac OS, X-16's), but i'd like to try some blades, of course my fear is that I will shank the ball all over the place. So my question, is there such a thing as a Forgiving blade iron? Which brand of blades is the most forgiving?

I am a 12 handicap and getting better . . . is there such a thing as a Forgiving blade iron?

Yeah - look for the words "perimeter weighted" or "cavity back".

Im going to be straight up honest with you.....
I have never seen you hit a golf ball, but with a 12 handicap I doubt you have the ball striking consistanty to play blades. I get people will argue with me here, but blades are much harder to hit in the long Irons then a GI club.
If I were you, I would do somthing like this....... Find the blade you like, and get say, P-7 in blades and then get 6-4 or 3 in there Tour club, but the more forgiving one. EG: Titlest MB P-7 and Titlest AP2 6-3. Somthing like that.

As you say, you think you might shank them all over the place, usually a shank is a shank does not matter what club you have. A shank comes from you doing somthing very very and it will then always be a shank and not just your usuall miss hit.

By the way, even some of the best ball strikers in the would and not using blades anymore. You can do "almost" everything the same, with a cavity back club.

Only reason I would go to a blade, if you have had lessons and your teacher can't find a way to get your "stock" shot to have a Mid flight. Blades will usually lower ball flight, so thats one of the reasons, some players switch to them....

Hope this all makes sence.

I appreciate the honesty, I understand blades are much harder to hit than GI clubs, but I can learn to hit them. What I am looking for are recommendations/suggestions on what brands or clubs are considered to most forgiving in the Blade category, Or what GI club compares to a blade in terms of workability???

Dude - look for players cavity backs. Good luck getting the average part time golf shop employee to show you these clubs by chance, you have to ask for them. They're brainwashed to sell certain clubs over others - regardless of what you want or need. Spend some time looking at each OEM (and major component manufacturer) website and look for their version of players' irons. It's not rocket science.

When bought my irons they didn't have all the options for players irons they do now. If you want to prove something to yourself, go to ebay and look for some blades - look for early 80s Titleists or 70s MacGregor or Wilson Staff.

Hard call.... Blades for forgivnes..... I like the New Nike VR's to me they feel is the best, They are all about as forgiving as the other, to be honest with you. I would Also take a look at the Mizuno MP 68's, im going to be getting these very soon. (I honestly wated till i started shooting round of Under par till i switched to blades, but thats just me.) http://www.mizunousa.com/equipment.n...0glf1-irons-mp

Another Club I would look at are the Titleist Ap2's not a blade, but same feel with really good workability and the Mizuno MP 52's and 62's all play like blades, but have that extra forgivness.

As a 12 handicap, the blade is the last thing you want. A lot of higher handicaps have this ego trip they get on, whether conscious or not, where their brain begins to tell them, "sure, I can't hardly break 90 with these here ultra forgiving clubs, but maybe if I switched to some clubs that were much harder to hit, I'd do better!"

Not likely. The #3 and #4 players on the planet play cavity back clubs. I play combo irons, and most of the lower handicaps here play combos or cavity backs. Now, I don't miss the center of the clubface very often, my misses are usually directional or thin, but I'm not a fool. If there's a chance my club can forgive me on a mishit, I'll take it. Blades are great for your ego, but terrible for your scorecard. A lot of people here talk about blades being "like butter" and all that, but it's not quite true. Any forged iron will feel like that, not any blade. A good forged cavity back is a much better choice. Titleist, Cobra, Wilson, Adams, Nike, and a few others make great forged cavity backs. Check them out.

i don't see how any club can make u shak them all over the place haha, that's a swing plane issue. i started on blades and stayed with blades in my long irons. to me, anyone can hit any club its just less forgiveness in blades. the club itself is not to blame for swings. if u want to ease into blades, try a combo set with cavity back in the long irons and musclebacks in the short irons.

If you like the looks and feel of blades....... play them. I have gone back and forth between my blades and cavity back irons many times over the years. My scores never reflected what I played. I can shoot a 75 or a 85 with either set. The biggest difference to me now as i get older is that the 3 and 4 iron have lost some height and total carry. I use a hybrid these days to replace the 3 & 4. I never bought into the blade vs. Cavity debate. I dont think it is a ego thing at all to carry blades. Its all about what looks good at address and how you like the feel of the club. Good shots come with good swings.......... not game improvement gimicks.

You know, I've noticed a fair number of folks on here can be real pricks when it comes to these kinds of topics. Just because YOU don't play a blade does not mean someone else CANNOT play a blade. If he wants advice on what to look for, and all you can come up with is don't try it because a pro does this or that, then don't comment. This isn't your golf game, it is the topic starter's. If said person wants to have a challenge why talk him out of it? How does it affect you in any way??

truthfully, I wouldn't suggest you play a muscle back unless you hit the ball extremely high. Yes, they are real pretty and they feel great when you hit it well, and are more accurate. BUT, if you getting the ball up is not one of your strengths, I'd stay away. If you can make it work on the course, enjoy them.

This might not be exactly what you want, but I'd recommend looking for some Titleist ZBs. They are a blended set, moving from muscle-back (short irons), to semi-cavity back (mid irons) and on to full-cavity back (in the long irons).

I play off 28, and love these clubs. I would have purchases an ex-demo set had they not been equipped with stiff shafts.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about trying to align handicap to club selection and then comparing that with what the top 20 players in the world use. Apparently, K.J. Choi is using Ping G15 (Ultra Game Improvement) irons at the moment, and I'm pretty sure he's superior to 99% of the guys on this forum... so using the above logic, most of here should actually be playing the Ping Raptures.

I love my ZB's and contrary to most people's opinion of these being to much club for a 20 handicap my scores have improved and the cap has dropped 2 strokes since I started playing these in Feb. and it continues to trend down.

not really, with shots on the centre of the clubface there's no real difference between the two of them. (2-3 inches doesn't matter).

Yes, this is what I was sugesting also, when I first started golf I brought my set second hand. Witch are blades in the p-8 and then go into semi cavitys. This is somthing I would really look into. When i brought my set i was also off 26. So you should be fine, i just think playing blades in the longer Irons is a silly idea, you are losing so much forgivness. As I said i one of my post's before, unless you hit the ball with a very high ball flight, I would try and get some more forgiving clubs in your longer Irons.

You'd think.

Back to the research. I was looking at a chart of shot patterns of different irons we were testing, and was particularly struck by something I saw.

I read something different another time, but I think your source is more credible.
