They made so many great products recently and it just didn't sell - no marquee player. Not sure what you're seeing now. I've see Forgan clubs for sale (Ian Woosnam was linked to them) - I have a vintage hickory shafted Forgan putter at home. I don't think they're coming back either.

I do see you're playing Ben Hogan Apex irons - they don't make 'em like that anymore. Actually, have a gander at the X-protos.

Re: MacGregor Back?

ha yeah i know they used to make great stuff but i knew in the late 90's they stopped making clubs.

and yeah I love my Apex irons and probably wont be doing anything with them as long as they still hit well. They are custom fitted and i have demo'd some irons. Cant find anything that I am as comfortable with.

I was just curious. I appreciate it guys

Re: MacGregor Back?

my mam has a set of macgregor clubs.
bought them new a couple of years ago.

I've seen a few muscle-backs made by them too.

Don't think they ever went away, not over here anyway

Re: MacGregor Back?

I think Golfsmith bought the brand? I know the Golfsmith store in Indy is loaded with the brand right now. Hard to believe they ever fell so far having been so big back when.

I think you're on to something there. I was in the Golfsmith in Sterling Heights, MI on Saturday and every employee was wearing MacGregor t-shirts over their regular clothes and there was a huge display inside the front door. I've never seen them push a brand like that before.

Re: MacGregor Back?

MacGregor forged great irons up until 2008 (MacGregor MT series). I own some M565s (2005 model) and m455 voil GW (2003) model--great clubs. If you don't own a set of MacGregor irons, look into purchasing the m565s or m685s as a travelling or second set (you can get them really cheap)

Greg Norman played the MacGregor MTs when he challenged for the British Open in '08. Aaron Baddely was their big tour guy.

Don't know why their golf department folded (I suppose they never really hit a homerun with technology, superstar player, or flashy looking clubs)---they still make football and baseball equipment.

Re: MacGregor Back?

Golfsmith purchased Macgregor last year.

I played some Macgregor Mt Pro combos last year. When I could hit them they were great.

Re: MacGregor Back?

Greg Norman used to own a part of MacGregor. Golfsmith recently bought the brand.

Re: MacGregor Back?

Just looked at the Golfsmith website. You can get the MT mids for $299--that is a steal.

I see they are offering MacGregor M85i and new MacGregor VIP irons at Golfsmith. According to the now up and running MacGregor website, Jeff Sheets, designed the new clubs.

Re: MacGregor Back?

I was concerned when I heard they were up for sale, and then went to Golfsmith. I got onto the Golfsmith chat room several months ago, asking for info on the MacGregor MT DW wedges (they have a slight onset - the leading edge is in front of the hosel ever so slightly).

Anyway, I lamented the passing of MacG, and the Golfsmith person told me not to worry: Gs planned to resurrect MacG as a strong brand.

I played MacGregor MT irons w/ stiff shafts from 1974 to 1994, and had an all MacGregor bag from 1983-1994 (except for Bullseye putter). The irons were great when I had lots of time for golf, but difficult to control in years when I couldn't play much. Had the driver restained, refinished and rewrapped a few years ago. Still have the all MacG bag w/ Bullseye in our home office room for historic/nostalgia purposes.

Re: MacGregor Back?

I the VIPs about a month ago when I ordered my Diablo Forged irons. I hit the VIPs, the MP-58s, and Diablos. They seemed to be good clubs but I couldn't hit them. Not sure what the deal was. They look really minimalist, which is cool.

Re: MacGregor Back?

I personally like the look of the new M85i irons. They aren't too busy (at least for me). Golfsmith is also currently giving you a free M75T driver with the purchase of the iron set.

I've never hit them, but at $599 for the iron plus the free driver, they would seem to be worth a look for anyone in the market for new GI irons.
