My index runs from 18-20, back and forth. I am on vacation and used some rental clubs. The irons were TM Burner XD I think...they were GI and looked a lot like my old R7 draw clubs.

While I was dealing with wind and also trying to figure out distances I managed to put in 36 holes and the 9s broke down: 41 42 47 41. I currently play with MP58s and have for a couple of years. It could be a fluke, who knows...but maybe the Mizunos are too demanding for me and I should think about finding something easier to hit.

Just trying to noodle through this one...

Don't go as much by scores as how you hit the irons. The lower scores could have been due to a number of factors, including the course (even if similarly rated to what you normally play), weather conditions, etc. and all of those things we don't usually think about when we have a good round.

If you truly did hit the ball better then maybe it's worth having yourself fitted to see what really suits you.

did you score well because you had a good puting and short game round? or was it the irons? Can you demo the same club and play your course to see it it is truly the irons.

It MIGHT be the clubs. The MP series is generally geared for lower handicaps. I know the MP52's (very simliar to the 58's) had a "core handicap range" of 4-16. You may want to look at the Mizuno MX line. They still have that soft forged Mizuno feel, but have the forgiveness of those TMs you tried.

However, the length, loft and lie of those TMs are WAY different than Mizuno. I'm assuming the course rentals are at least standard loft and lie. So, unless you've had those MP58's adjusted to be the same specs as a TM, then they will definately play different. Maybe you just need those MP58's to be more upright? Just a thought.

OOps for the record I have MP57s at home.

So I went out again yesterday and paid closer attention to my game. I shot a 40+47. I hit almost every green on the front and missed all the birdie putts. However...I don't think it was the irons. My drives had me in the fairway consistently. Also, missing the green did not penalize me so much as the rough wasn't really rough and the sand was fluffy. I think it was a combo of hitting the driver straight (burner w/stiff shaft, choked up) and the simple short game challenge. I lost interest in putting on the back 9 as the greens had been versicut and sanded. They're going to deep water and roll them for a tournament on Sunday. Didn't help me.

I have two more rounds in Hawaii - one of them at Waialae (woo hoo!) and the other at MidPac, which I heard is also very nice.

I really can't believe I am on vacation with my wife and baby and am going to get in 5 rounds of golf in 10 days.

So as for the irons....I have a set of Nickent 3DX at home I never played (got them for when a friend wants to go out with me but has no clubs) and also my old set of R7 draw irons. I could take them out and see how I do.

I also think the advice on loft and length is good and I will go for a fitting. I tried some Mizuno MX series wedges...they went in the bag with the 3DXs.

I had MP60s and had to get rid of them. The misses put me in bad places. I get away with more now and like the higher ball flight. My personal weakness is mid iron play and with the mizunos I had I got killed for that. I do not regret making the change to something I can mishit and still hit a green.

I'll bet she can't either. What a great holiday for her.

I have MP57 irons 4-pw and dont find them difficult to hit unless I really go after one.

Even then it will be in the middle of the face but will produce a power fade

Just curious, if you find them not difficult to hit, why is you hc 20?

Because I am very errant with the big stick and it costs me many shots

Par 3's are a complete different story Also I play the hardest course in my area (links) I played today at an easier course and shot an 88 (which would make me a 16) Also i have only been playing 11 months so my course management is terrible

I got the burners from the Fairmont. NOTE...joining the Fairmont Presidents Club i s free and as a member you get free club rentals even for off property courses. BOOYA...saved me a ton.

Easier-to-hit irons depends a lot on what you do with a given type of club. Mizuno rates the MP-57 model for a

core handicap range of 1 to 10. You put together your own mixed set: hybrids in place of longer irons, and player's cavity clubs for 6I to PW. This could work, depending on whether you have much time to practice. As others have said, you would have to compare conditions at your home course, vs. those where you shot four nines in the 40s. It you could test out those irons at your home course, that would tell you which way to go. Or, you might end up just practicing a bit more with your shorter irons. I have broken 80 twice in my life, shooting 77 both times. The second time was with rented Wilson clubs on vacation in late February. Leaves were off the trees... the dry, somewhat fluffy greens took 8-iron chip shots very well... not much break on the putts... set had a big-headed 3W that I just smoked all day long. Plus, I birdied the No. 1 HDCP hole with a chip in from 30 yds. out in the fairway. It was a case where the conditions matched my game - no big push to switch to Wilson.

I just sold my MP52s after a few months trying them out. My misses just never got to the green, where my MX23s would still let me at least find the putting surface. Also lost a bit of distance with the MPs. Figure my swing just isn't up to the tougher to hit irons right now, and I'm happier for the change.

So I am again thinking of new easier to hit irons and have been trying the JPX800 and Adams CB2. I have to get a stiff shaft Adams to really try it out, but the JPX is super easy to hit, and hit straight. I'll try it out some more and then figure out what to do...

Just out of curiosity, what is your miss with the MP57's?

I just picked up a set of Mizuno JPX 800 Pro's. I will say the MP57's are just BUTTER as I tried them out as well when I was looking for new clubs, but I knew that I needed something with more forgiveness. The 800Pros are that for me. I just got my swing dialed in with them 2 days ago [had em for 6 weeks of limited play/practice] and I couldn't be happier. Suffice it to say the 800's are a great club that you'll really like.

EDIT TO ADD: I also tried the CB2's before finding the 800's and I found them a lot harder to hit than the 800's. I guess it was love at first hit with the 800's where it was the complete opposite with the CB2's for me. More of a n=1 testimonial there, but take it for what it's worth. good luck on the club hunt.

    • My two cents? Don't. As a beginner that's interested in learning about the golf swing, you'll find yourself consuming a lot of information, most of which isn't even relevant to your own swing. You need to learn you can't think your way to a good golf swing. Focus on the one thing that you're working on and doing that on every swing, come what may. And remember, mishits happen.
    • Day 6 (7 May 24) - More work in the backyard focused on tempo in addition to setup.  Worked with 6 and 7 irons hitting hard foam balls - used the old MacGregor irons to mix it up a little.
    • No! lol. But they have to be in the right sequence to play mid-handicap golf or little better. Mostly. And even in that there is range/margin for error in the motions and positions that most normal humans can handle. It helps if you have a decent idea of how a golf club moves around the body like you would any other equipment sports (baseball and hockey might be the closest) After all, fairways are 40 yards wide. Don't overthink it. Be diligent in getting basics right. I will concede that it is harder than it sounds but it certainly is not exact angle/exact position/exact degree of bend/exact speed/exact facial expression, etc, every.... single.... time or the result is horrible death.
    • Looking to play in the Severna Park Golf league and it got rained out the first three weeks. I know the course is being renovated so it is not in great shape but the location is easy for me and I would love to meet some other golfers in my area. Anyone here in Maryland Annapolis area?
    • I like to look at the positives.  Overall you are fairly consistent down the center with most shots 20 yards or less off center.  On most fairways that should be in play.  Sure, you had some very short duds, but also if you look there is a good cluster in the 110-125 yard range.  Sure, we would all like to be longer, but knowing your typical shot is more important than trying to hit the 7-Iron 175 Yards.  Just take more club for longer shots and do not worry about it.  Your distances may increase as you improve over time so do not get caught up on that now.
