I just really started playing golf this year (instead of once every couple months, it’s a couple times a week), and I am looking to buy myself a new driver. I have a slice that I am working on getting rid of, and was wondering what a good beginner driver would fit my needs best. So far I have just had hand-me-downs’ and would really like to get into a modern driver. I have been doing my research and found that Cobra drivers have a big sweet spot and can be bought with an off set to help the slice... I am not really looking to spend more than 150-200 dollars, so any suggestions would be great.

If you're looking for forgiveness than any of the square shaped drivers would help you out a lot. Also the higher lofted Drivers will be a little easier as well. The majority of guys don't need a 9.5* driver with X stiff shafts, even though they seem to be the first guys to pull out their Driver claim 300 yards and slice OB.

I started Golfing in march, and use a 12* Square Driver. I only play with one FW and its a 17* 4 wd. But I prefer control over distance and am a conservative player, and I've gone from scoring in the 120's to low 90's in six months. However it doesn't matter how forgiving your driver is, if your swing is jacked you're still going to spray a lot of drives.

That's exactly what I am looking for, something with some forgiveness... So any square shaped driver, and something with a higher loft... What about the Cobra's?
It also doesn't have to be a new driver, it could be a lightly used... Any brands you would suggest? What kind if shaft should I be looking for or avoid?

I just bought the Maxfli C3 bullet from Dicks Sporting Goods for $50. They are still running it at that sale price and I love it. They have it in both a square head and a more traditional. Might be worth a look

It is actually a 2 for $100 deal they are running. You get the driver and then either a fairway wood or hybrid

In my bag

I would say don't buy a driver with offset, that is just masking a bad swing fault that should be fixed over time and when you fix it, you will have trouble with hooking the ball.

If your looking for a forgiving driver I would say the Nike sumo 5900 it's a square head driver very forgiving!
I honestly never really liked cobra gear, but everyone had a different opinon.

If you have a low ball flight a 13* driver would be goof for you, but if you have a mid to high ball flight, I would just buy a 10.5. If you get a 13* I would say your going to ballon alot of shots. But only if you already have a high ball flight.

Any of the modern drivers today will be quite forgiving. As already said square head drivers will usually have a higher MOI, so they are more forgiving.
Another few good foriving drivers and the taylormade 07 Burner and the 09 Burner, Ping rapture, Ping G5, G10, G15, Nike Dymo square head, Cleveland Highbore (I highly recomend it)

All thoese drivers there are extremly forgiving! As I said, if you already have a mid or high ball flight, get a 10.5 driver. Because you are going to want room to grow with it and your swing is going to get better. If you go out and buy a 13* Offset driver you will outgrow it in 6 months time when your swing gets alot better.

Good luck! New drivers are always fun :)

I broke my driver 2 weeks ago just before the start of a round. I asked the pro shop if they had a driver I could demo for the round and they gave me one of the cobras. It looked a little strange at address because of the offset but it really made my ball go left. I hit some very nice draws that round and I never do that with the my normal driver. I lost a few balls left also because it was hard to bring myself to aim far enough to the right.

You probably won't fix whatever flaw you have that's causing you to slice because the club will do the work for you but as long as the ball is playable who cares. Check around your local shop and try to find a used one you can demo. Maybe look at the Ping G15 draw also. I hit that at a demo day last year (when most of my drives were still way right) and it 8 out 10 were playable.

The big fix for my slice came during a round this year. I have been told a bunch of times to keep a relaxed grip on the club but when I have a driver in my hands I always want to kill the ball. Even if I took something off the swing I still had a death grip on the club. I finally managed to loosen my grip and it made a huge difference. Not sure if that's one of your issues but it's worth a shot.

Several good mentions so far...

I agree that a big stick with offset simply masks a problem with your swing/grip/etc. Check the left hand grip, I've helped fix or at least control a lot of left to right ball flight tendencies for buddies by "strengthening" their grip. Not in power, but in hand/finger placement. When addressing the ball, how many knuckles can you see on your left hand? Should be at least two (pointing and middle finger), maybe 2 1/2. Another way to look at it... The line cormed by th base of the left thumb where it meets the pointy finger... At address, where does that line point? Should be between your chin and RIGHT shoulder. Rotating the left hand to a more powerful position helps you get the clubface square at impact. It also takes some power away from the right hand. An overpowering right hand often delivers the club to the ball with an open clubface.

Ball position is the next big factor for curing a slice in my opinion. Good luck, enjoy your new driver!! Let us know what you pick!

Best way to find your ideal driver is to bring your driver into the golf store and hit the store drivers and compare your driver and see what the benefit of the new drivers can give you based on your budget. Don't forget to try their used drivers also.

So the recommend the Cleveland Hi bore over all the clubs you mentioned? Why is that? It seems to be the cheapest out of the bunch, but I guess thats not always a bad thing... Which one would you suggest, the XL, XLS, monster XL, or monster XLS?

Sorry should have made that a little bit simpler :P

Any of the Hibore range is really good for biginners, all very forgiving drivers and there is alot of room for people to "grow" into them. Ive only hit the Origional Hibore and the XLS Monstar (I think that is there newest one) Not much difference, you will just be paying a little bit more for the updated tecnolagy (how the heak do you spell that?? :P) The XLS had a much better sound and little bit better look, and acording to Cleveland it's there most forgiving driver out of the whole Hibore line. One bad thing about the Hibore drivers is there LOUD inpact sounds, but if you were going to buy a cobra driver, you would be getting the same thing :P Another driver as I said in my last post is the Nike Sumo 5900 witch is also really good for beginners, the new model of that is the Nike Dymo. But again very much like the Hibore, very very forgiving and because of the odd shape of these clubs heads these are also very loud. Im just saying what I think is best, if you can go to any demo day that brands hold at golf clubs and try what you like out and see how they fly on the range is going to give you your best idea of what you ect. Honestly what ever you buy now, you will most likly want to change it in a few years time because you will have a better more consistant swing and then you can get fitted in a golf shop for somthing that really will suit your golf swing. Anymore questions, let me know :) (If my spelling is really bad, im sorry it;s; 1:30am and im tired haha)

I bought a Hi-Bore XLS off Craigslist a few weeks ago for $60 (club was only used twice) and I'm really liking it. The club is really loud when you hit it on the sweet spot though, can be annoying at the range. I like it a lot more than my Nike SasQuatch 460.
