I am in a bit of trouble, I just suffer a bit from side spin on some long iron shots, it isn't much but at about half of the long approaches, my ball ends up just off the green.

I am great at scrambling (ca. 45%) which saves a lot of pars, but if I would be able to hit more greens from let's say 160-180 yds ...... I could improve.

I have been playing the Pro V1 and V1x balls and went to the NXT Tour, which eliminates most of the side spin issues, but from let's say 120 yds from the hole I sure prefer the V1.

So what I am looking for is a ball spinning a lot on partial shots, with a soft sound when putting and less spin at full iron shots ......

I know ..... nearly impossible ...... please advise !

Sounds like you are having the baby version of what I have. When I hit my driver the slice is controllable, but the ball runs right. I know that my issue is cause by a combination of lunging, collapsing the left arm, letting off the gas at impact, and looking up.

I would guess that you have a slight case of one of these things on the long irons.

Check that.

Taylormade Penta? According to their marketing buzz it gives you everything, plus the kitchen sink. Ill be playing them this weekend to test it out.

Agreed! Then again, doesn't everything from Taylormade give you everything you could ever need (or so it seems based on their marketing).

My thoughts (worthless I know) are that "160 to 180" is a mid iron (you're playing at sea level or lower though, right?) and 45% is average at best for a 5 handicap from "just off the green" (I'm sure you're including all chances though). Work on your alignment and path, not your choice of golf ball.

What you are asking for is indeed quite impossible. Controlling the spin really comes down to your ability to do so vs. relying 100% on the ball to do the work for you. That said, the only ball that would come close to anything that you are looking for is the Taylormade Penta.

Oops that was 160 to 180 meter (is about ..... 175 - 200 yds) and I am not really a long hitter....... My iron swingspeed is about R, but I am playing PX 5.5 for the accuracy..... so 5i - 175 yds, 4i - 183, 3i- 200 yds.

And you're right my 45% scrambling is average for my hc......., but it includes anything within about 25 yds off......... from just off it is about 65-70% I KNOW ..... I just have to work on my swing on those 3-5 irons and i am NOT a Taylormade "marketing believer" Just hoped to find a "cheap" solution ...... now I will have to work all winter to reach scratch next year...... Any thoughts on the Bridgestone B300RXS or Srixon Z Star balls and how they compare to the Pro V1

Did you try the Top Flite Gamer V2?

I used those on Sunday and all I can say is, "wow". They feel hard to the touch, but not when hitting the ball. Plus I use an Odyssey so even Pinnacle Golds feel soft with the putter.

The Z Star is about as good as it gets. They offer plenty of feel and spin for the short game and give good distance too along with durability.
