How do you setup your ball position and stance with your driver?

Hey I'm just curious how everyone likes to play their driver, I've been battling with adjustments on mine...

Assuming most of you play the ball forward of center to some degree, my question is do you close your stance to compensate for the fact that the club is beginning to rotate inside on it's path?

Read about that somewhere, wondering if anyone can chime in on how legit that tip is, for some reason I don't think all the pros do that, but it makes sense if you're playing the ball off your left heel or further foward than that...

Cheers

Ive been battling my driver for the last few weeks, and I finally moved the ball back in my stance to correct my problems. It now sits about 2 inches back of my lead foot.

Ive never been able to draw the ball consistently, especially more so as the ball goes forward in my stance. Putting it inline with my left heel makes a nice slice.

1. is it possible to draw the ball off the left heel position?
2. if so, do you really need to get the hips in front of the ball at impact?

Ok, here goes, I pick a spot about ten inches in front of the face which by having looked from behind I know the spot( broken tees work really well) is alighned with the target. Then I make sure the face is dead square to that spot, then I let the club tell me where to play the ball ie. I always have my hands adjacent to the inside of my left thigh so when I approach my grounded club without moving it, the angle of the shaft tells me where to stand, I know it sounds wierd but thats what I do with all my shots.Hey,I'm not very good so If I arbitrarily play it back or forward either I can't keep my weight behind it or I can't reach it.This way my whole swing thought is "get your hands back to where they were at address".Works really well for me.

Yeah, lately I've been picking a spot just forward of ball to use as my target line. I approach the ball from behind, align the face with the spot forward of ball, take my grip, then I have my left foot open a bit. This is new for me, I've been battling a hook for so long and came across this "fix" from watching Fred Couples (even though he plays a fade and I don't). I don't hook it anymore but it will fade on me if I don't swing relaxed and free. I do play the ball off my big left toe, sometimes even further up depending on how high I tee it.

This took a lot of experimenting and practice at the range for me. Right or wrong in terms of technique, I don't care anymore, I just like the results. I've been battling my driver for so long, to have a swing that's confident and reliable is now more important to me.

I'm curious as to why you play it off your left toe.As I said in my post i have to rely on the set angle of the club to tell me where to play it, however I do adjust a little, never over a half inch and only to insure head behind ball at impact and hands through before club head. Are your hands at address forward of your inner left thigh? like I said just curious.

Actually, I've just always done it that way but I did come across this Shawn Clement video two years ago.

Now, I don't play it that far forward as Shawn but my setup is similar as far as my hands go.

Usually just have the ball just inside my forward heel in the stance. Then I keep my left arm straight and stand in my ready to swing position. I move closer to the ball slightly till with my left arm straight in my swing position the ball is just inbetween the toe/sweetspot on my driver and then swing away. Making sure I feel comfortable the whole time im lining up, if im not comfortable I step back and start over.

Clearly your a better golfer than me at a 6hcp but my driver is my best club so I feel ok sharing some tips with it.

ball position is on the inside left heel (pretty standard I guess)

my feet are set up slightly open to the target, and my shoulders are square or maybe a little bit closed to the target. my really bad slice is now a nice looking minor fade, but I also get the occasional super hook.

Ball forward- even with the inside of my left shoe/foot.

Left foot turned normal (slightly open) and right foot turned out to 45 degrees. I've discovered that at that stance width, my hips are closed (point towards my left side) unless I turn out my right foot.

I hit my driver consistently well. Better than any of my other long clubs until my 5-iron.
It is my putting that is my achilles heel.

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
