should i get my driver fitted?

hello,

new to this forum.  I am currently a 15 handicap.  I can hit my driver pretty good.  (dymo2 str8 fit) i usually average 250-270 on a good drive.  should i have my driver fitted? will it make that much a difference?  thanks for the advice!!

Driver fitting is certainly the latest rage, and I think there is merit to it.  With that said, I played as a single-digit for quite a few years with a stock Taylormade 580XD, without thinking twice about the shaft.  I think too many players get caught up in the technology/customization crazy in lieu of improving their ball-striking.

Unless you are consistently hitting the ball too high/low or missing consistently one way or the other, I'd wait until you've grooved your swing.  Fitting and reshafting can be expensive if you're serious about finding a good shaft.

If you can, seek out a lesson with a good pro in the area.  He will be able to guide you best, and he should be happy to address how your equipment fits your swing.

I agree with fitting once the player has a solid swing, but what are people getting fitted for? Optimum ball speed, spin, and launch angle, while hitting a ton of balls off a rubber tee into into a screen, while inside a golf shop? Yeah, that happens a lot out on the course. Here's what I've done for playing in the real world, and the OP can take it all with a grain of NaCl.

There are a few drivers in the garage at home (one of them was even purchased brand new - PING G10 - and there are more made of wood than metal) and I hit them all okay, but each one has a bias that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Basically what I'm saying is that if a driver fits you reasonably well, it doesn't have to offer the best stats. It just has to be one in which you're comfortable standing over an important (aren't they all?) drive on your home course. Considering how common fitting is, why not give it a go. But don't be afraid to take that recommendation and pick up a couple cheaper, older drivers out of their used bin and get familiar with those. You may find that the fitting data is transferred to the course and you may not, but you'll spend a lot less that way. Or more depending on how much willpower you have.

There are a lot of threads on this forum (and others) where guys took their fitting numbers as gospel, shelled out big coin on a driver, then dumped it a month later because they could never replicate that driver scenario on the course.

from what you posted you already have the driver that works for you.  if you're consistent in driving then why change?  you'll go farther by swinging faster.  put your money in lessons that get you a consistent swing rather than trying to buy it with a club.

I'm with everyone else on this subject. I got my handicap down to a 3 without being fitted for anything. I did get fitted for irons which at least in my mind helped however I wasn't far off of standard. The only reason I was fitted for my last 2 drivers was because I got them at demo days. However I was fitted for both standard with stock stiff shaft. I do think people get caught up in the whole after market shaft deal a lot and it probably does help people but from the looks of it you're already hitting it good so why change.

few things: define "pretty good" (how many fairways hit per round roughly?) you're at a 15 handicap...lessons would definitely be more beneficial than a new driver...if the reason your a 15 is your driver, use your 3W till you can get your kinks worked out with the driver on the range...getting fitted may help you hit more fairways but it's what you do in the fairways that will "make that much of a difference"...

I think your money would better be spent on other parts of your game or your complete game itself in a lesson...just my .02

as  far as getting "fitted" for a driver- are you going to a clubmaker who will be measuring, testing, analyzing, adjusting, testing, measuring, adjusting, testing and analyzing (i.e fitting) or are you going to demo some clubs and buy one from the store (i.e. "fitting")?
