Does this bother anyone else or is it just me?

I get so annoyed when someone in my group asks to hit my new,... iron, driver, hybrid or whatever. I just dont like hitting other peoples clubs and get somewhat annoyed when others ask to him mine. I took a new stance recently. When a couple guys in my group wanted to hit my new driver I said,... fine hit away as long as you understand that if there is so much as the slightest mark on it you just bought yourself a driver. Seems after that they no longer wanted to hit it anymore.

My normal playing partner is allowed to hit any of my clubs, any time. He's a high single-digit capper who is a very good ball striker.

Probably a good thing, but I've never been asked by anyone else.  :)

i know what thats like . A former co worker and i went out and having no driving or woods he played mine . He was doing fine until he put an idiot mark on my driver which came off with wet buffing but it was no fun . People want the privilege of hitting a new club without having to care about the potential  damage.

I personally haven't been asked many times, but I can see how it could get on your nerves. I wouldn't lend out more clubs susceptible to damage (woods, hybrids) no matter what, but I think that I would be pretty lenient on lending out more durable clubs like my irons, wedges, or putter for a swing or two. One of the only times I've been asked to have a club borrowed is when a rather older man (mid 60's or 70's) saw me spin back a wedge into a green, said he's never seen an average player do that, and he asked me to try my wedge. I tried to explain that it was more about swing speed/green slope than the equipment, but I didn't see any harm in letting him take a few shots at it.

It depends on the relationship you have with your fellow playing partners. I have some friends I wouldn't let near my driver, etc. but have others that I have no issue with letting them try it out.

Personally... I fucking hate it when people tell me to hit driver on any hole farther than 250. There's a 310 yard par 4 with tons of trouble after 240 (two lines fairway bunkers on the left with a greenside bunker behind it and another fairway bunker on the right). Oh but hey let's try for the once in a lifetime shot for an eagle attempt. No thanks, I'll take my 4 iron then gap wedge and have a 10 foot putt for birdie.

Since my playing partners are usually my 26 and 22 yr-old sons, they have free access to every club in my bag.

Anyone else?  Not so much.

it would probably bug me a little.  i'll never ask to him a someone elses club.  i'll express interest in it and sometimes they'll offer but would never just flat out ask to hit it.

This one's weird for me. I'm happy to offer someone to try out a club of mine but if they ask I think it's rude. lol

As a lefty I usually don't have this problem.  I have no issue with someone trying my irons or wedges, but would get a little nervous with woods unless I knew the person.  Since switching to the FT-9 iMix it wouldn't be catastophic for me as replacement heads are under $100 now.  If I was using a new driver like an R11, 910D or Razr Hawk, no way I'd let a stranger swing it unless they handed me $400 to hold while they did.

This is one situation where I'm glad I'm a lefty. Nobody asks to try my sticks because I'm "backwards" lol

I guess I'm an outlier here.  It hasn't happened many times, but I don't think I've ever minded when someone asked to try a club.

I just can't see anyone doing any worse damage than I can do on any given swing.  (Unless it was a total hack, and then I'd maybe be a little nervous about it.)

Then again, I'm not the type to baby my clubs. To me, they're there to get used and I don't worry about scratches.

But that's just me. You should see my iphone -- cracked, scratched, well loved. :)

At the practice range I go to, I have swapped wedges with other players - sometimes strangers. Gives us a chance to test other model clubs in outdoor conditions. Range has excellent turf grass, so it's not like someone will hit a rock.

In general, drivers are off-limits. Exception is people who play together regularly, especially if one guy gets a new big stick. Even then, the owner usually volunteers a test hit to his partners.

Focus, connect and follow through!

When I got my new driver I offered it up to my brother to give it a shot.  He actually declined because he didnt want to mess up my shiny new club.  After some convincing on my part he wacked a few with it.  Its not like hes gonna hit a metal pole or a wall with it.  The plastic grass from the mats wipes right off, and I didnt even bother to do that, its just a golf club.

The only person that ever hits my clubs is my father.  I actually let him borrow my clubs for a round as he is looking to buy some new ones and wanted to try mine.  Other than that, no way in hell are you touching my bag.  Your lucky if I give you a tee!! Consider me cheap but I go through enough of those as is.

When its breezy swing easy!!!!!

Nobody ever asks to hit any of my clubs so I guess it doesnt apply to me.   I never ask to hit any of my friends new clubs, only exception was when my friend bought his new odyssey putter i wanted to try it out as I thought i might buy one too but theres not much damage anyone can do to a putter unless they get mad and throw it or whack it against a tree or something.

This one time my freind asked to borrow my brand new 9.5 Nike Dymo2. It was like a week after I bought it. He takes it up to the tee and he says, "Tee it high and let it fly right?" and I was like," Sure..." So he tees the thing up like 3.5 inches and skies the ball about 150 yds into the air. It lands 50yds out in the fairway and there is a massive ballmark right on the crown of my driver. That was when I stopped letting crappy golfers use my clubs...

DONT RISK IT

I wouldn't ask to hit unless someone offered, and I wouldn't let someone if they asked, unless it was my brother.

    • Welcome to TST @Camjr.   We're glad you've joined.
    • Angle is not a factor. I hit the ball 100’ high. Par is net birdie. My CH is 16. The rough between the bunkers is like 10’ wide though. That’s not something you’re going to try to hit on purpose. Most of the area to the left of that is fescue/native vegetation and I’m pretty sure there isn’t a flat lie in any of it. It’s the second hole.
    • Hello all.  I'm about to be 57 yrs old, started playing when I was 16, and have quit and restarted the game more times than I can count.  I had started playing a weekly round with a friend, and finally made the jump to Senior A shafted Tour Edge clubs.  Instantly gained 10 yds with an easier swing (why didn't I make that jump sooner???).  Glad to be a part of the group. Cheers all,
    • I think I like this hole.  It is a clear "Risk-Reward" choice.  Since most of the shots in your cone cleared the bunkers I would say they are a minor risk and not a big issue.  Playing the aggressive line may give you 70ish yards in from what looks to be playable rough while conservative play is 120ish from fairway.  I know you said 70 vs 120 is minor for you but how does the approach angle in impact your results?  I figure both strategies are playing for Birdie since holing out from either is mostly luck. Looking at your proximity hole I think it says @ 50 feet when hitting from the fairway from 100-150 and 40 feet if hitting 50-100 from the rough.  Neither of those is an easy birdie putt.   I like the approach angle from the rough between the bunkers & the adjacent tees over the angle from @ 120 in the fairway but I really do not like the idea of hitting onto the adjacent tee boxes and that may impact my confidence with making the shot.  Also, too far left may be a worse approach angle then from the fairway short of the bunkers. For me this may come down to how confident do I feel when I reach that tee box.  If I am stroking it well off the tee leading up to the hole I would try for over the bunkers and the better angle in but if I am struggling that day I would likely opt for the fairway to take more bad stuff out of play.
