This is taken in the middle of a lesson where the instructor and I have worked to get my arms more in front of my on my backswing and downswing instead of behind me.  I've also worked on turning more "downward" into my right side instead of just around so my head doesn't pop up on my backswing.  Sometimes I top it if I rush it from the top without having turned into instead of on top of my right side, if that makes sense.  My lower body action is pretty much the same.  What do you guys think of that?  Is there enough hip slide here?  Does it look like I hung back some?

Any instructors care to comment on my hip action?  It looks as though I haven't moved far enough to my left before rotating hard with the hips.  This is all intentional, but I think it might be misguided and the result of my generally high ball flight (Around 6-8 degrees above where I should be).  I was basically trying to implement Hogan's comment that he starts his downswing by a rotation of the hips, along with some of my own observation that he fell in slightly toward his target before the rotation.  I don't intentionally push off with my right leg to start my downswing as is recommended.  I'm willing to change that, of course, if it means being a better ball striker.  Any good advice will be taken appreciatively.

  • 4 months later...

My swing has always been a work in progress since I started.  Always trying to improve it, sticking with what works and throwing out what doesn't work..  It's weird, sort of, but just by going through that process alone completely from scratch (well, not completely, but close ) , it's starting to look more stacked and with a lot more of the qualities promoted by you guys on TST.  Maybe it's being on this site, or maybe you guys are on to something.  Here's me hitting a 7-iron.  Life was too wild to get a down the line view, but I turned my shoulders on an additional 17 degree incline compared with a couple months ago.  I'm still getting used to it and simplifying the motion some, but this just feels like I'm on the right track:

I am by no means an expert, but I do notice a few things about your swing.

Your head movement is considerable in your back swing and as you begin your downswing you are subconsciously trying to correct it. The very first thing I notice is that you are picking up your head and moving it slightly left as you begin your back swing and you are "standing up" in your stance. Then you begin your downswing and throughout you can note a crunch as your head bows down and your body hunches down in an attempt to bring your body back into alignment. I can also see that you are releasing too early. So I get the impression that you are trying to "hit" it.

Believe me, I have been a copious offender of this in the past, but I think I've crunched that part as I am paying more attention to my arms at the top of the backswing, which I'll admit tends to be exaggerated a bit past parallel. Then, after a relaxed backswing, I begin the downswing while maintaining the angle of my wrists as best as I can. This will enable a good release at the end of the downswing thus transmitting that power through the club head and into the ball somewhat efficiently.

You've gotta concentrate on remaining as stationary as possible in your backswing only to allow the natural movement as you initiate and rotate leading with your shoulders. If you do this, your torso will follow naturally. Otherwise, you'll find that you're torso is leading in the backswing and that will never result in consistent shots.

P.S. Like I said, I am no expert. I have my own problems. However, I feel that I can help based on what I know and the things I myself have eliminated from my swing as a result. :)

Mike, thanks for your points.  I compared my swing to that exact video of Grant's before posting, and I was aware (really even before comparing them based on feel) that my upper center was moving considerably forward.  This is intentional because the recommended forward hip position with head back position causes excruciating lower back pain that lasts about a week or so if I overdo it.  I had an XRay last year and one guy said I had a lumbosacral transitional segment that basically causes disk herniation.  The other, more senior surgeon said it was just the way the film developed.  I'm not sure who to believe, but one things for sure, my lower back has always given me chronic trouble.  I've been doing a lot of core strengthening trying to work with it as best as I can.  It has helped quite a bit, but the problem still crops up occasionally.  Starting on Thursday and well into when this video was taken, for example, I was in a lot of pain.  This swing didn't really cause any pain, but it definitely would if I had my hips as far forward as Grants.  So do you have any advice for this situation?  I'll try to let the back rest and do the drills as much as I can tolerate...

Sorry to hear about the back issues.  This is a stretch that has helped my back stay healthy

I know many players that have lessened or taken pain out of their backs by making sure the legs straighten into the followthrough.  Not necessarily saying this is your answer because your issues could be more complicated but keeping the legs bent on the follow through adds pressure on the lower back.  Maybe practicing in slow motion can help.  And I'm not saying that you have to look like Grant but I think standing up more will change the picture for the better and hope you're healthy enough to try it.  Some pics I put together

No problem about the back issues.  It's something I've dealt with.  The hardest position for me to hit in golf is the finish.  This is mainly because I lack the mobility, particularly in my quads and hip flexors.  Just standing in the finish position is a pretty big stretch for me.  I think my legs are bent because the quads and hips are too tight, causing additional back pain.  Also, if a position is tight, obviously you can't hit it with any speed, so your brain causes you to decel so you don't pop a muscle.  Deceleration is pretty bad for golf, as you know.  Anyway, my flexibility issues I believe are caused by sitting down all day at work, shortening the quads and hip flexors.  I've been standing up every hour, walking around and doing some stretches, but it only helps so much.  I ordered a standing desk to just eliminate the problem entirely so I don't have to fight it.  I'll start working on those things and post some progress in a few weeks with some better camera footage.

Which swing are you referring to?  The one from earlier in the year is completely different and should be ignored.

I think there's some camera distortion going on here.  It's hard with my iPhone to see what's actually going on with my hands at that moment because it's crappy for golf.  I don't think they are in the position at that vertex.  It does look a little like a flip, but if you zoom in, you can't really see what's going on.  I didn't really change my hands through impact much from this swing, only my shoulder turn and how my weight moves, so maybe you can tell from this one instead.  Otherwise I need a new camera before posting again so you guys don't waste your time.

The camera's fine. I drew the line up from the shaft of the club and down your arms.

Roger.  I think my stance is too wide.  I can get my hips much further forward getting closer to the position Mike recommends by narrowing it up some.  With the stance in the first video, I feel like my right leg loses it's ability to continue pushing the hips forward.  It's not that I'm not pushing, it's just that my leg doesn't have any leverage because it's already straightened about as much as it will go.  The second video is narrower and so I think it allows me to push my hips laterally more.  Does that seem right?

I'm having a problem with the head back, hips forward and jump part.  The further out from under my head my hips get, the more it feels like I'm losing all of my leverage on the club.  It's like I had the feeling that I was throwing a ball with my legs on the ground, but when trying to press forward like in the Nick Clearwater drill, I have the feeling that I'm throwing a ball while standing on a skateboard.  There just aren't any legs under me to balance and support my body.  Is this normal?  What am I doing wrong?  Here's my latest attempt.  Sorry, but I got obsessed about it and couldn't not post something:

Can I swing like this instead?  It feels athletic to me to park my head forward and down from the transition and then to rotate around it at that point like in the pure strike video.  Is this an old swing of Grant's?  Why did he change this.  It seems very natural to me.

    • I did read the fine print tonight. It said replace with “similar features & function”.  8 yeas ago my purchase had features that today are available on the lower end models and the current version of my model has more “bells & whistles” than what I got 8 years ago.  So I am thinking they honored the agreement and I can’t argue the offer. since getting a credit for the full purchase price all I am really out over the past 8 years was the cost of the extended warranty, which was less than a low end  treadmill would have cost me. now the question is which model to replace with.  I’ll stay with Nordic Track or I forfeit the $1,463 credit so I will get Nordic Track.  And they honored the warranty and were not hard to work with which is a plus.
    • Generally speaking, extended warranties are a terrible deal and should almost always be avoided. They are a huge profit center for the companies that offer them, which should tell you almost everything you need to know about how much value most consumers get when purchasing them.  This is correct, and the old adage applies - only buy insurance when you can't afford the loss. This usually doesn't apply to most consumer goods.  To your second question, no I don't believe the offer is fair. They are replacing it, but it is not being replaced at "no cost to you". Since the amount being disputed (over $500) is non-trivial, I would probably push the issue. Don't waste your time on the phone with a customer service agent or a supervisor. They have probably given you all they have the authority to do. Rather, I would look at the terms of your agreement and specifically legal disputes. The odds are you probably agreed to binding arbitration in the event of a dispute. The agreement will outline what steps need to be followed, but it will probably look something like this.  1. Mail the Nordic Track legal department outlining your dispute and indicate you are not satisfied with the resolution offered.  2. Open up a case with the AAA (American Arbitration Association), along with the required documentation. 3. Wait about 4-5 weeks for a case to be opened - at which point someone from Nordic Track's legal department will offer to give you the new model at no cost to you.  They certainly don't want to spend the time and energy to fight you over $500. 4. Enjoy your new Nordic Track at no cost to you. I recently entered binding arbitration against a fairly large and well known company that screwed me over and refused to make it right. In my demand letter, I made a pretty sizeable request that included compensation for my time and frustration. Once it hit their legal department, they cut me a check - no questions asked. It was far cheaper to settle with me than to send their legal team to defend them in the arbitration.
    • I never thought of looking at it on multiple purchases like you said.  Yes, the extended may help me on 1 or 2 items but not the other 5 or 6.
    • Day 84 - Forgot to post yesterday, but I did some more chipping/pitching.    Back/neck were feeling better today, so I did a much overdue Stack session.
