My last five rounds i have been hitting the ball great hitting lots of greens but i dont feel the score reflects that.

Last 5 GIR% avg: 49%

Last 5 scores are: 77,81,80,78,79.

I have been hitting a bunch of greens, like yesterday (79) i hit 11 greens but only made one birdie and that was after hitting i par 5 in two.

I know my putting is killing me and i also avg 1 double bogey every round which is a killer.

I have a putting mat(2.5m) at home which have gotten a lot of time latley but i still do not make it from that range(2-3m 6-10 feet) hence the lack of birdies. Very receptive greens and my short irons was on fire i think i had 5 of these opportunities yesterday and did not make a single one.

How to you start making these putts? Time for a new putter?

Also i tend to loose focus in the middle of the rounds and thats where that double bogey shows up. I usually come back a little after that but usually quite angry.

are you hitting your lines? Is your speed off?  Are you misreading the putts?  Are you leaving yourself nasty putts that are downhill and break a lot?  I mean theres reasons you are missing (not every putt is going to go in, but some should)

dont remember every putt but the feeling i have is that i can miss either way short, long, right left.

I guess my green reading is not what you would call good but i do think i always have a good idea of the break but over/under read it alot.

I also play lots of different courses so difference in greens might play a part as well.

Last couple of holes yesterday i started lining up the text of the ball to my line and it worked ok and i actually made 1 longish putt (10feet). So i will give that a go in the next couple of rounds.

I soon have 4 weeks off for golfpractice so throw some good puttingdrills on me as well!

There are a number of putting drills that you can practice to try and help

I like the placing 2 tees just outside the putter width down and hitting puts.  That will work on bringing the putter to the impact zone square.  Might help pushing or pulling and getting the ball started on the correct line.

Something I ususlly do as well is place a ball 1,3,6 then a long put and work or trying to get the feel down for those lenghts.

Those are 2 drills that have helped me over the years, and you can practice those for a few minutes before every round.

I did not begin to make putts of a decent length until I actually started using the line on the ball, or a spot in front of the ball, and setting my body parallel to that line. It would be luck if I made anything when I vaguely set up to the putt and tried to see the line while standing over the ball. I figure if I set up consistently, with my feet, shoulders, and hips parallel to that line on the ball then that is the best I can do.  From there I just hit it with the best stroke possible, keep my head down for a second or two, and hope for the best.  If I don't make any putts I don't feel bad since I gave them all the best opportunity to go in.

Good advice there ^^^.  Once you pick the line and make the stroke, it's out of your hands.  I think Brad Faxon said the same thing on the Golf Channel Playing with the Pros.

My GIR for 2011 is 44% (lower than yours) and I'm a 2HC.  This is just a shot in the dark, but you might want to also look at your save % when missing a green.  A fun suggestion......find an online site where you can log detailed stats and your weakness will present itself.

Very interesting....mine is 35%.  Then again.......the website I use may use different criteria to calculate saves.  IE....1 putts for par may be the only number that counts where I track mine.  Not sure.....

Do you know your average putts per hole, average putts per GIR, and average putts per 18 holes??

PS......

I see you are in Malaysia......ever play golf on Penang?  I've played Bukit Jambul CC a few times.....fun track!!

so far im only playing golf around KL but planning some trips but most probably it will be to thailand. but going home to sweden for summer holidays latley ive been really motivated to play golf so i guess i will get a good amount of practice in!

scrambling for me is making par when missing the green so making par after pitching out of the woods would be in this category.

i also keep up and downs which is chip/pitch(shot inside 50yards) + 1putt for par.

But presented the wrong info.

Scrambling is 35% last 20 rounds

Up and down is 39% last 20 rounds.

Sand saves 15%

33 putts per round

Putts per GIR 2.06

Putts per missed GIR 1.61

When i look more into my stats and compare to the ones you talk about i can see that maybe my biggest "score destroyer" is that

i avg 1.5 double bogeys per round

i also make a triple rougly every 10 rounds

and only making 0.65 birdies per round

Our stats are VERY similar in many ways so your posts are very interesting to me.

.  I used myscorecard.com 10yrs ago when it was a free site, and I was thinking that "Scrambling" counted as any up/down..not sure.   IE...you hit it OOB....hit three from the tee and miss a par4 green....get up/down for a 6 and it counts towards your 'scrambling' stat...as well it should!!!!  Whether it counts or not doesn't matter.  The story that stat tells is very telling and wee learn a lot about our game..

Your scrambling and Up/down percent is 35-39%...I'm not sure how they are different.  I think of both being the same thing......miss a GIR......what is the percentage you make par?  Either way, it's fun to discuss...

As a whole, your stats seem similar to mine except for putts and SS....(30%ish)

Average Putts:
- 1.65
- 1.83
- 29.71

With that said, this doesn't tell the whole story.  It's certainly interesting digging into the details!!!

It sure looks like the difference is about 4 putts a round :)

With 1.83 putts per GIR you must make a ton of birdies!

My feeling when i play is that if i made a 2-3 birdies per round i would brake 80 every time.

I will be on the putting green alot this summer i think. Im also thinking of experimenting with a larger head putter and maybe with a insert.

I have always played Anser or B60 all metal heads.

Maybe a change can be good as confidence is extremely important in putting.

theres a difference between gir's and really hitting greens.  IMO without a birdie putt distance stat the gir stat is relatively useless. like if your not within 15 feet of the pin from everywhere it makes sense that your not making birdies...and when your inside 100 yards you need to be looking for birdie and expecting to leave it within 10 feet.  also you need to get really really good at reading greens because at this point golf is all confidence and you have to just pick your lines and hit them.

here are the stats I would like to see

approach shot distance

1st-putt distance

birdie putt distance

% greens inside 100 yards

approach shot distance i dont really understand. it can be anything depending on course.

avg 1st putt distance GIR last 20rounds = 25 feet

avg 1st putt distance GIR last 5rounds = 16 feet and its really the last 5 rounds that has been a bit frustrating since ive been so close but not scored as well as i think i should.

% greens inside 100 yards i would like to say 100% but the real figure is probably around 90% and not always close.

birdie putt distance should be the same as GIR 1st putt.

up and down first putt = 13 feet

cody west after your input when i think about my wedge game is not very sharp. i feel more confident putting it close from 135-140yards with a full 9iron then a 3/4 SW from 75yards.

I feel your pain.  I track all of my stats with my SGX and upload them to skycaddie's website.  I haven't decided if it's helping me or just making me more frustrated.

FIR 72.7%

Driving Distance 272.9

GIR 48.8% (this is pretty atrocious  considering how I drive the ball)

1.86 putts per green

Scoring average of 79.8 (GHIN 5.5)

I'm really frustrated with how often I miss greens from the middle of the fairway; and correspondingly how often I make stupid bogeys.

My birdie percentage is 10.8%= 1.944 birdies per round average which isn't really isn't too impressive. IMO

I know your feeling, i am driving the ball great, but i just can't controll my irons curve well. I am getting closer, i think its my set up, so i am going to tweak that a bit. I know i am hitting the ball first, my trajectory is just awesome.

Putting is one of the few things you can work on with out a camera. Full swing, beating balls is tough and bad if you don't know what your working on, or have someone or video to tell you whats wrong. So i would just spend a couple days a week, just putting. If you need to work on your stroke. I like the idea of finding a flat spot, were the ball wont slide left or right off the clubface. Tie a string to two tees, and create a straight line to put under. From there, just putt down that string.

that inside 100 yards is where you look to score. so in your last 5 rounds if you avg 16ft from the hole and you make, lets be generous, 25% of those you make 2 birdies a round.... thats not the reason your not scoring.

the reason your not scoring is because you avg 13 ft from up-and-down distance.  I chip in probably once every other round and probably 1/8 on the practice green. even from like 50 yards out you need to be confident and know you can attack the pin and get up and down. i would be willing to bet that the 13 foot up and down stat is the reason your not scoring.

my advice: work with your wedges, go to a range with nets, and hit balls with the wedge that you are the most comfortable with and occasionally change targets so you can practice judging distances and your swing.
