I've been thinking of the same, but for different reasons. But not until my handicap is below, or at least near, 20 to fit into one of their brackets. I'd like to at least have a game of some sort.

I was under the impression that they had brackets for people that had high handicaps like us. Am I wrong?

There's one for 20+ handicappers... somehow, I have it in my head that it's scratch competition within the brackets. Perhaps it's handicap based, but then why bother with brackets?

I think that is very possible. These guys used to that when I played the 3 on 3 hoops tourneys in the 90's. I only played high school ball but the guys we played against put on the entry form that's all they played. But they really played D-1!CHEATERS! But I think that there is something in the seeding where if you continue to score well they are going to move you to lower handicap bracket.Hopefully that will keep the better players from sandbagging and lapping the field.

I think the purpose is for people like me that are not that good(like me) to get competition in along with maybe a little tour-ish feeling play. For me it would let me try and beat the guy I'm playing against.I like winning,losing....not so much!

Im starting to get interested in this golf channel tour the more I hear about it. Does anyone know if there are any kind of money prizes with this tour? I know the actual membership is $200 then around another $200 to enter each event. So whats the payoff for winning an event?

It is to play some organized golf tournaments that don't rely as much on a given club hosting a tournament at the same course over and over. And maybe you can convince yourself that you'd make it on a mini-tour.

Kind of like those vacations where you drive a car quickly on a closed course and shoot paintball guns, pretending to be 007. Only far more frequently, and you're actually hitting a golf ball with golf clubs.

I think sometimes it cash and other times it's prizes. but i think that there is a limit to what they can "pay" you so.if they "pay" too much one would lose amatuer status.

The purpose is to give the casual amateur player an opportunity to compete in a local/regional/nationwide tour. You play in handicapped brackets, stroke play, and within your bracket you play gross. It's a lot of fun, you get the opportunity to play interesting courses, and you meet some interesting characters.

I've played in two tournaments in the "Los Angeles" tour, neither of which were in Los Angeles, but close enough. They have both small and big events. For the big ones, they combine several local tours into a regional event, and the field is bigger and stronger. The next LA tour event I'm playing in is in Phoenix!

I think it's a great idea, and if successful, could be effective in promoting and building golf on the amateur level.

Thanks very much for the info. When I get my handicap (and skill!) down enough that I can reasonably compete in one of the brackets' gross competitions, I plan on joining. Maybe I'll run into you one day (although I suspect different brackets)

How true are the handicaps? I have heard of tournaments (not Golf Channel tournaments) where a 26 handicapper somehow had the best weekend of his life and combined a 72,75 to win. I assume there is something in place to ensure this doesn't happen?

I suspect most tournaments that are held outside of established clubs reserve the right to change your handicap for the tournament based on performance. Others might only count your handicap for the first round or two (with reservations of change) and thereafter count only rounds you shoot in a tournament. Then it costs you $2000 to sandbag when you can't win that much by sandbagging.

I played a season in the NE tour.

Basically, you paid 125 bucks to play a course that would usually cost you half the price to pay.

Some of the guys that played were cool... but the entire A flight rarely broke 80. Weekend golfers mostly...

VERY VERY SLOW PLAY.

They had a Golf Channel Amatuer Tour tournament at the course I play at (Hardscrabble CC in Fort Smith, AR) a few months ago. I didn't play in it, but from what our pro told me it was just something for people to pay money to come play a private course they wouldn't otherwise have access to.

Same here, we saw these guys setting up a few years ago...asked the price to play...we laughed all the way to the bar...$125 buys a lot of beer!

    • Day 76 - Pretty sore today, so I opted for putting over my Stack session. Primary focus was on starting line, as my putting has been pretty poor this year.
    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
    • Day 109- Putting drills on a putting green for 20 minutes.
    • Day 252: did a stack session. Did some slow rehearsal swings during breaks.
    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
