Hi,
Have been away from golf for a few months because of a disc herniation.
Have played 7 rounds since coming back the first 4 where quite horrible with scores very close to 90 but managed to stay right under it every round 86,89,85,89.
The first 4 rounds i did not feel i "had it"
But the last 3 rounds i have been playing great front 9s Even par, +1 and this saturday -2 for the first 9 holes.
All these second 9´s have also started out ok but the last 5-6 holes i have just been blowing up. doubles and triples coming in to the scorecard finishing with good scores mid-high 70´s but very frustrating when the game is there.
I know one of the reasons is i start thinking about posting that nice score around par and get tense.
Also my physical fitness is not 100% after 2 months without real excersice may play its part towards the end of the round.
Give me your best tips for keeping focus for 18 holes especially when playing good golf.

Find someone close to your handicap and play a match, or better yet skins. The penalty for a bad hole is the same no matter what, and you can win or tie a lot of holes through clutch putting, even if ballstriking is off. It also changes the strategy based on what they do and keeps you thinking rather than just being patient.

I hit my best shots it seems when I have the least room for error.  I only have one shot I can hit, so I see it clearly, and I'm totally focused on it.  Even if I miss the shot it's usually a well hit shot that's very close to the intended target.

I think I can carry this same mentality into the final holes when I'm playing well.  Pick a safe target, and then attack it like it's the 17th green at Sawgrass.  See the exact shot you want to hit:  starting line, trajectory, shape, landing point.  Say it out loud if you need to, but be completely focused on that very specific target.  If you miss, you'll still be safe.

Of course, it's always easier to say this than to do it.  I had a pretty good round going last week, and I bogeyed the 15th simply because I lost focus.  I tried really hard to focus on specific targets the remainder of the round, and I finished eagle, par (narrowly missed a birdie), bogey.  Obviously we all need reps in these closing hole under-par situations to get better at them.

You've probably heard this in one form or another from any number of people, but it's helped my game as much as any tip or equipment upgrade I've put to use. It's most evident when I'm having a bad day; the more frustrated I get the worse I play. But if I'm having a great day I can just as easily choke under the pressure of maintaining the pace through the rest of the holes. If it's possible to do so on the course, I will even walk away for a couple minutes or an hour and come back. Just about every time it helps me focus and concentrate on what's important. I've even snuck a fishing rod in my bag once or twice and threw a few casts in the water hazards during these sabbaticals. There's nothing like combining your two favorite hobbies

See you on the course.

Just gotta get out of your own head.  I have similar problems on good rounds.  I've taken some lessons from the rounds where the blow up section is earlier.  My round last weekend is a good example.  Was +2 through 6 holes.  If I can keep that pace that's a 78, great round for me.  Totally shat the bed 7-9, going +7 on those three holes.  With a 45 on the front I know I'm not going to be posting a great score for me, so I relax and concentrate on just trying to hit some good shots that I can be happy about, playing shot to shot.  With that attitude I put up a 39 on the back, which is a very good, though not epic, 9 hole score for me.

Plus I hit that 39 with two 3-putts.  I didn't let those get to me cause I was using a new putter which I was dominating with on <20 foot putts but which I hadn't practiced lag putting with and those two three putts were from awful putts in the 50-60 foot range.  Just goes to show you how you need to figure out some way to play shot by shot with no anger or anticipation about scoring past or future.

I wouldn't post this in any of the numerous SLOW PLAY threads

Yours in earnest, Jason.

Ha - good call Ernest. I would never do this unless it was in between holes and was I able to, for all intents and purposes of the other golfers, "leave the course". If it would hold anyone up I continue to play, regardless of a potential to choke.

See you on the course.

Play golf as 18 rounds of one hole rather than one round of 18 holes. Don't think about your score, just try to hit good shots. Accept the result of each shot and keep going until you hole your last putt.

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

    • Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
