This is my first post. I am a 20 handicap. I am looking to get a nicer set of irons than what I have now. I have the Adams Golf Insight XTD II's. I bought these irons because they were on sale and I really didn't want to spend that much money because I didn't think that irons would make that much of a difference to my game. I thought wrong ! I hit my buddies Callaway Razr X's and those clubs feel amazing. They are very soft when you hit the center of the face and don't sting your hands like mine do. So my question is what would be a good set of irons to look at for someone who has my handicap and is looking to improve? Any suggestions are welcome.

My Preferences

6i = 150 yds.

Dont hit a lot of GIR's.

Not concerned with distance.

Price is not a factor now. (Learned my lesson the hard way.)

Thanks,

Golfguy21

It's really hard to say what irons would be best for you. The thing I would recommend most would be to go to a major golf centre near you and try out lots of different types of iron sets. The other thing which might be good is if it's within your budget, get a fitting session.

A fitting session will help ensure you have or get the right flex of golf shaft as well as the right length for what you should be swinging. It will also help you get the proper lie angle on your clubs.

I have been looking at the Callaway Razrs because I have a friend that is considering purchasing a set. I have not personally swung any of them but from all the reviews I've read and the additional information they seem to be performing up to the expectations that have been set.

Hope this helps, I know it's probably a bit vague.

Thanks for the reply. I think my main concern is I don't know whether to get GI irons or SGI irons.

I think it depends on how much you intend to play.  If you will apply some attention to practice/playing, look at a GI iron you can grow in to.  Just make sure you get a good fitting.

Get something to grow into. Get them fitted. found out when I bought new clubs that I was using way to soft a flex and the clubs were 3/4 inch to short.

I went to Golf Headquarters by my house and got fitted for the Mizuno JPX 800 irons. They had me hit off an impact board and all that stuff. I actually fit the standard lie and length so I didn't need any adjustments. They gave me a light steel shaft in the irons and it felt amazing. I never hit so many shots in the center of the face in a row ever. These clubs are long also, I gained 10 yards on my 6 iron.

Thats awsome GolfGuy!

I have heard allot of great things about Mizuno so I think you will be very happy with your purchase! Got any pictures? I actually just picked up my new clubs a couple weeks ago and the golf courses here are just starting to open up the driving ranges so I think I will be going out to hit them more tomorrow!  Again, congrats on your purchase! Got any pictures of your set?

There is no such thing as clubs which are "long".

You will find that the 6 iron loft on your new ones is closer to the 5 iron loft on your old ones.

Lofts may vary but the distances the clubs hit do not, provided they rae hit in the middle.

The lofts are the same but for some reason the ball comes off hotter and higher than with my previous Adams golf set.  No pics yet I will post them once I get a chance.

Sure there are. I know a guy, plays basketball, his clubs are 2" longer than standard. They're long!

Solid choice. Reviews are favourable and they should work well as you play more and improve. You should be set for a while. Congrats on the purchase.

    • Yea Club Rat said it. I really enjoyed the Senator and the Judge, then over to Grand National where there a couple good courses plus a fun par 3. The one I do play whenever I visit there is Ross Bridge; something about this course that is just good fun. I hope to play more of the courses in the future, but tomorrow is promised to no one, so hope is the key word. Have Fun, iSank

    • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
