  1. 1. Which would you buy: AP 2 712 or i20 irons?

I have been going to demo days over the last few weeks. I am going to buy new irons, and I have narrowed it down to i20 or AP2 712. Love the feel of both of them.

I was a bit worried that the AP 2's wouldn't have the forgiveness I need at times, but I have hit them and was quite surprised at how the ball reacted, even with some mishits. The i20's didn't have quite the same feel as the AP2's but the ball flight etc was great and very consistent. I have read tons of online reviews of each, and am having trouble deciding.

I am going to get fitted this Friday, and was looking for some input from other people's thoughts and experiences. Thoughts on feel, forgiveness (i am a 9) distance etc...

I think at the end of the day you need to go with what you think will be best. If I were you I'd probably lean towards the i20's but I'm a Ping lover.

ETA: My internship boss (golf pro) switched from the AP2s to the i20s and says he hits it far better and further with the i20's. Just a thought.

Thanks XMan, I think I am leaning towards the i20's based on reviews I have read; similar experience to what you have said based on your boss's experience. But man, the forged AP 2's felt like butter....I have had Ping irons for about 8 years now.

I hear ya. I have the G10s and while they're great irons I wish I had gone with the i10's when I got them but at the time I had a lower ball flight and the pro fitting me told me I should go with the G10s so I did. Now that I'm in the golf industry I can get a good deal on Titleist stuff and I want now irons. I wish I could get Ping irons but I can't afford them so I think I'll have to go with the AP2s which really isn't too bad a situation to be in.

I've only hit the i20's but they do feel like butter when you put a good swing on them. I'm planning on gaming a split set between i20 LW thru 7 iron and G10 or G15 6 thru 4 iron. I simply have trouble hitting my long irons.

You're even gonna get a LW i20? Seems like it'd be hard to hit a lot of shots around the green but I do think I'd be a cool set to get the G series for the long irons.

Yes, because my Ping tour wedges have a different shaft and I want to keep the same shaft throughout my irons. Now if I get the older AWT shaft in the i20's I can keep my current wedges.

I would get the ap2s. They have decent playability and performance as well as a good resale price. I love both personally

You can't go wrong with either set. You need to buy the clubs that you want to hit. They have to look right and feel right to you. I bought the i 20's and really love them. I stuck a 4 iron from 205 into a pretty good wind the other day to about 10 feet. I am 54 and it has been a while since I did that.

When I hit the i20 7 iron, I noticed it went further than my i15's. How much extra distance are you getting from your i20's since you got them?

In January 2011, I talked to a Ping rep at a regional golf expo. He was also a teaching pro and clubfitter. At that time, he talked about the G15 irons. He played them, and had fitted players from single-digit HDCP to the mid-20s with G15s. The key thing, he said, was to get the right shaft and flex for your swing.

Since you like the i20s, you might try the new G20s. You mentioned forgiveness, and the G-series irons seem to offer more of this. The G15 and G20, however, appeal to better players more than the G10.

I'd say it depends on your golf plans. If you can really increase the amount of golf time in your life, the i20 or the AP2 could work. If you have 10 days here and there when you simply can't touch a club, you might consider the G20.

And, remember that you are an 8 HDCP - you understand the golf swing well enough to hit a basic draw or fade with almost any set of irons. So, you have quite a few workability options from what you understand about the game.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Well, I went and got fitted yesterday. I hit both the AP 2's and the i20's. I hit them both good, and really liked the feel of both. I was hitting a 7 iron in the i20 and a 6 iron in the AP 2, and was hitting them about the same yardage. I also found that on some mishit shots, I didn't loose as much yardage with the i20's.

So I went with the i20 irons, 4-PW with stiff KBS shafts. I also hit the i20 hybrid and loved it; thing pretty much sold itself, so I ended up getting a 20˚ hybrid too.

Now i just sit and wait.....

Thanks for the input from those who responded to the thread.

I have been away for a few days. I hit the i 20's 10-15 yards further than either my Ping i 3 blades or my Titleist 990's. It took me a long time to retire those two sets.

I tried the G15 and i15 and found that I hit the i series better, and I'm probably around a 30 hdcp. Mind you I didn't hit anything longer than a 5iron. The G series just looks ugly to my eye and that seems to effect my confidence.
