Followed it up with a nice 65 today (Sat., June 9th). 4 stroke lead going into Sunday.

The Hooters Tour is a looooooooooooooooooong way away from the PGA Tour. Or even the Nationwide Tour for that matter.

And TG x 2 still has to close the deal on Sunday . . . But Tommy is blazing compared to Don Donatello who can't even make a cut on the Hooters Tour. [Well, one out of seven for $900.00 . . . ]

True, but at least he is putting himself in opportunities to play in PGA and Nationwide events. That's more than can be said for many the mini-tour players in the US.

That's right he is paying his dues now, if he keeps it up before we all know it 9 or ten year old kids starting to play golf will use 2 g's also...

We all know Zach started there too.....and this year he won the masters....I know its still a long shot, but at least he's making a go at it and full props to him for trying.

and cyclistgolfer, he is already having an impact, my other half saw him wearing the two gloves on the Big Break IV and she decided to give it try and she's been that way for a year and a half now and loves it. (at least any tan lines are equal on each hand...altho still sorta a$$ looking LOL)

i agree about zach johnson started there and now is a masters champion, the hooters tour is good competition, not as tough as the pga but its a start.

I made a thread about him making it on the PGA tour and basically got laughed at. The Hooters tour is a far cry from that but at least he's well on his way to getting some real experience, making some serious money and a name for himself. Plenty of PGA professionals played the hooters tour not just Zach Johnson. Chad Campbell, Ben Curtis, David Toms, Jim Furyk, John Daly... etc.

As someone who didn't laugh at you - I didn't even pay much attention to that thread - I feel I need to point this out. I'm not picking on you, but rather on just about everyone who makes this similar argument.

First, yes, mini tours are definitely good experience. So are the big amateur tournaments. Now, I live near some areas where gambling is legal. Casinos advertise how much money someone who played there won. They don't - for obvious reasons - advertise how much money people lost there. It's certainly impressive for the Hooters Tour that people who have won majors played on their tour. It is similarly impressive that Ryder Cuppers have played on their tour. The statistic that I'd be curious about is how many people seemingly do well on their tour and never go past that? Or how many get from there to the Nationwide Tour and never progress from there? Certainly, Mr. Two-Gloves stands a better chance at getting to the PGA Tour than I do at the moment. But my question is: do the top players on the Hooters Tour get to the big leagues on a regular basis? Or is it the case that John Daly, Jim Furyk, and so on were likely to succeed anyway, and they happened to play on the Hooters Tour while waiting for Q-School, or for some other reason?

While I don't have the hard numbers, I would say it's like any other professional sport that the single digit percentage ever make it to the top ranks. But what it does provide is an opportunity for those that have a chance, to continue to practice in a competitive setting and hone their skill sets. If there was no mini tours a lot of these players that could have eventually made it may have given up long ago.

Whether Tommy ever makes it I guess time will tell, but I am happy for him that he is having some success, whereever that may be.

In some cases i believe you're right. Some of those mentioned only played on the hooters tour for a season or 2. Others like zack johnson won 4 times on the hooters tour. Apparently Chad Campbell made over 700,000 on the hooters tour. It is a good way to gain experience and make money to back you career financially. Gain sponsors and then possibly exemptions elsewhere through sponsorship. Im not an expert on the subject but I dont believe the Hooters tour can directly gain you status or exemptions on any other tour. As I said, the Hooters tour is a long way off of any kind of PGA tour status but i was merely pointing out the fact many PGA pros started their aswell.

Hooters and Gateway are certainly great ways to keep oneself afloat financially while working towards the big leagues, provided one is able to play. It's also good to practice things like proper attire, pro-ams, walking rounds, scorecard correctness, and so on -- things you'll need. And a good record on that tour can get you sponsors -- John Daly even has Hooters as a sponsor, I believe.

You're correct that no mini-tour has any guarantee of getting one onto an umbrella tour. And many PGA Tour players did start there. My addendum is simply that the issue isn't how many succeeded, but how likely is a winner on that tour to succeed?
